Cephalalgia : an international journal of headache2024eng
BACKGROUND: A previously unreported systemic reaction to Galcanezumab (Emgality) is described. Galcanezumab is a humanized monoclonal antibody designed to bind to calcitonin gene-related peptide, a neuropeptide associated with neurogenic inflammation during migraine attacks. Although clinical trials showed that Galcanezumab had few adverse reactions (injection site related erythema, pruritus, and swelling), no systemic drug reactions have been noted.
CASE REPORT: A 50-year-old female with chronic migraine, mast cell disorder, Hashimoto's disease, positive antinuclear antibody and positive ant

The intravenous injection of K2Cr2O7 produces a specific flare-up of old sites of contact sensitivity to K2Cr2O7 and, in very highly sensitive animals, there is also a generalized rash all over the body. A similar specific flare-up of old contact sensitivity site to BeF2 can be produced by the intravenous injection of Be lactate. Histological examination of the flare-up site shows an infiltration with polymorphonuclear leucocytes. Flare-up reactions can be blocked by an antiserum directed against polymorphonuclear leucocytes but not by anti-LNPF serum which blocks contact sensitivity reactions

Three cases of adverse reactions to repeated intramuscular botulinum toxin A (BTA) injections are described: a persistent rash on the face at the site of injection, a localized anaphylactic reaction following BTA injection into one leg, and bilateral ptosis repeatedly following BTA injection into neck muscles. The mechanisms for these idiosyncratic adverse responses are not known.

Teriparatide, or recombinant human parathyroid hormone, is approved for the treatment of osteoporosis. Possible cutaneous adverse events of teriparatide are urticaria, injection site pain, swelling, bruising, and pruritus. However, there have been no reports of widespread eczematous reactions caused by teriparatide. A 47-year-old male was recently diagnosed with osteogenesis imperfecta and prior to teeth extractions, he was subcutaneously injected with teriparatide. The patient developed multiple pruritic erythematous papules and plaques on his abdomen, around the site of the injection. A skin

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Data are limited regarding the safety associated with administering valproate sodium by intravenous push (IVP) compared with intravenous piggyback (IVPB). The objective of this retrospective pre-post analysis was to compare the safety profile of valproate administration via IVPB from March to May 2022 and IVP from June to August 2022.
METHODS: A total of 890 IVPB and 440 IVP administrations were included. The major endpoint of this analysis was the incidence of infusion site reactions (infiltration or phlebitis).
RESULTS: The incidence of documented intravenous (IV

BACKGROUND: Injection-related pain and fear are common adverse reactions in children undergoing vaccination and influence vaccine acceptance. Despite the large body of literature on sources of vaccine non-compliance, there is no estimate of the prevalence of pain and fear as contributing factors. The objective was to estimate the prevalence of injection pain or fear of needles as barriers to childhood (i.e., 0-18 years) vaccination.
METHODS: Four databases were searched from inception for relevant English and French articles until August 2021. In addition, the references of recent systematic

The day after intramuscular injection of vitamin K1 (phytomenadione) into her thigh, a 27-year-old-woman with normal liver function developed a relapsing and remitting eczematous reaction localized to the injection site, and later a further eczematous reaction under an adhesive dressing (Duoderm). On patch testing, she was positive to vitamin K1 and cross-reacted to vitamin K4; she was also positive to colophonium and to ester gum rosin, the dressing adhesive. Recurrent angioedema persisted for several months and, 2 years later, symptoms were still occurring over the injection sites. Structure

PURPOSE: To review reports of severe skin reactions during amifostine treatment.
METHODS AND MATERIAL: The expert panel reviewed postmarketing reports of skin reactions and discussed strategies for evaluation and management.
RESULTS: Between 1994 and April 2002, 35 events were classified as severe skin reactions worldwide: erythema multiforme (8), Stevens-Johnson syndrome (10), toxic epidermal necrolysis (11), toxicoderma (3), and bullae (3). Unadjusted incidences were 6-9 per 10,000 radiotherapy patients and 0.8-1 per 10,000 chemotherapy patients. In 10 patients (29%) amifostine was continu

Glatiramer acetate, given as a 40 mg subcutaneous injection thrice weekly, was recently approved by the FDA based on data suggesting better compliance and a more favorable side effect profile compared to lower dose, daily dosing. The most commonly reported adverse events are transient injection site reactions involving redness and pain at the site; however, more pronounced panniculitis and lipoatrophy have also been reported. Here, we present the case of a 51-year-old female treated with higher dose glatiramer acetate who presented with a cutaneous injection site reaction consistent with Nicol

Bullous pemphigoid (BP) is a rare blistering skin disease that is commonly treated with corticosteroids and immunosuppressive agents. Here, we present a 74-year-old woman with severe BP following a leg fracture who was successfully treated with omalizumab. We started her on a regimen of omalizumab 300 mg subcutaneously every 4 weeks, and within a week she reported significantly decreased pain and faster healing time of lesions. Incidentally, bilateral erythematous, non-blistering dermatitis developed 5 centimeters distal to the injection sites within a week of her first injection and resolved

Seven patients with lepromatous leprosy (LL) were inoculated with recombinant interleukin-2 (rIL-2) at 5 lesional sites on the back, four sites receiving one dose of 10 micrograms and biopsy specimens being obtained on 4 consecutive days after the injection. At the 5th site, rIL-2 was instead administered over several days, three patients receiving a total dose of 40 micrograms and 4 patients 150 micrograms, while biopsy specimens from this site were obtained 7, 14 and 21 days after the first injection. Most injection sites developed features of a delayed-type hypersensitivity reaction, namely

BACKGROUND: Depot antipsychotic injections are an important tool for the management of patients with schizophrenia who have difficulty with adherence to oral medication. However, pain and discomfort at the injection site can be a potential impediment to the use of these long-acting formulations. We report here the results of a pooled analysis of injection site-related adverse events (AEs) collected during treatment with the olanzapine long-acting injection (olanzapine LAI).
METHODS: Unsolicited injection site-related AEs were pooled from 7 olanzapine LAI clinical trials conducted in patients

Three children had striking localization of varicella lesions to skin overlying a diphtheria-pertussis-tetanus toxoid (DPT) immunization injection site, a facial abrasion, and a sunburn of the trunk, respectively. Presumably, during the viremic stage of varicella, the virus passed from damaged blood vessels into the skin. A disabling myalgia in the thigh at the DPT site in one child may also have been the result of localization of the varicella virus in the muscle during the inapparent viremic stage. This suggests that an injection given during an occult viremia could trigger an unexpected rea

A 79-year-old man had been treated with recombinant human insulin since the age of 77. He developed subcutaneous fat atrophy around the injection site 16 months after induction of insulin therapy. Skin biopsy of the atrophic site revealed inflammatory changes and adipocyte atrophy. Changing the type of insulin and injection site relieved the fat atrophy. Although insulin-induced lipoatrophy was a common complication before the development of human insulin, it is now rare. The immunological reaction to the insulin product, as in conventional impure insulin-induced lipoatrophy, seemed to be invo

AIM: New Zealand monitors vaccine safety through vaccinator reports of adverse events following immunisation. The rate of reporting for the commonly used vaccines during 1990-5 are presented. During this time new vaccines were added to the immunisation schedule, enabling comparison of reporting rates.
METHOD: The number of events were obtained from the CARM database and a rate calculated based on estimated vaccine use.
RESULTS: Injection site reaction with adult tetanus-diphtheria vaccine was most commonly reported (68/100,000); a rate five times higher than with tetanus vaccine. There were

Treatment with interferon (IFN) could be associated with variable cutaneous adverse reactions. The aim of this study was to describe the clinicopathological spectrum of cutaneous granulomas associated with IFN therapy and identify the causal relation between IFN therapy and granulomatous reactions. The study included 18 patients (16 males and 2 females) with an average age of 48 years. Clinically, most of the lesions were solitary (83.3%) and located on the face (44.4%) and/or trunk (38.9%). The lesions were commonly presented as nodules (33.3%) or plaques (27.8%) with a common size of 5-10 cm

The resistance to bacteria was studied at the site of delayed footpad reaction in mice immunized with Listeria monocytogenes. When a challenge injection of listeria was given into the footpad of immune mice, no enhancement of bacterial elimination was observed before the generation of delayed footpad reactivity. After the generation of delayed reactivity, an enhanced elimination of listeria or Salmonella typhimurium was observed only at the site of strongly positive delayed footpad reaction elicited with listerial antigen. Such an enhancement in bacterial elimination was also found at the site

Cutaneous reactions associated with interferons (IFNs) treatment are either localized or generalized. The most common presentation of localized reactions at IFNs injection site is usually an erythematous patch or plaque. Local leukocytoclastic vasculitis presenting with cutaneous necrosis is extremely rare. We report a 19-year-old man with hepatitis B who had local leukocytoclastic vasculitis induced by interferon-gama injection at the injection site. After changing the injection sites and using the combined treatment of prednisone and colchicine, the previous lesion healed and no other cutane

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the possibility that latex antigens (natural rubber) can contribute to or cause local sensitivity at insulin injection sites.
CASE: A subject with documented local cutaneous allergic reactions at the site of insulin injections and with systemic latex allergy manifested as anaphylaxis was tested with intradermal injections of insulin diluent from two manufacturers and with two brands of insulin syringes.
RESULTS: The subject had high titer anti-latex Ige and elevated total levels of IgE in serum. Anti-insulin IgG and IgE antibodies were absent. Erythema and wheals occur
