The objective of this study was to investigate the utilization of ambulatory dental services in patients with primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS) prior to their diagnosis using a population-based health claim database in Taiwan. From the Registry of Catastrophic Illness database in the National Health Insurance Research Database in Taiwan, we identified 389 patients who were diagnosed with pSS from 2005 to 2010. We also obtained 1,945 control subjects frequency-matched on sex, 10-year age interval, and enrollment date from the Longitudinal Health Insurance Database. Both groups were retrospective

Children's orthodontic utilization in the United States: Socioeconomic and surveillance considerations.

INTRODUCTION: There has been no epidemiologic study of malocclusion prevalence and treatment need in the United States since the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, conducted from 1988 to 1991. In this descriptive study, the authors sought to estimate orthodontic treatment prevalence by examining a nationally representative survey to assess current pediatric dental and orthodontic utilization. METHODS: The 2009 and 2013 Medical Expenditure Panel Surveys were used to categorize and compare all types of pediatric dental and orthodontic procedures in children and adolescents

Role of nutrition in the dental practice.

The current climate of health care delivery emphasizes comprehensive care, with an increased focus on early detection of health risk, disease prevention, and health promotion with referral to specialty providers as needed. The integration of nutrition screening, basic diet education/counseling, and referral in dental practice fits with this climate. Shifting patterns in disease epidemiology, the advent of new therapies and drugs which impact nutrition and oral health status, and greater recognition of the relationship between nutrition and oral health provides dietetics and dental professional

The effectiveness of a self-reported questionnaire on masticatory function in health examinations.

Periodontal diseases have been reported to be lifestyle-related and associated with metabolic syndrome (MetS). The introduction of dental checkups in a health checkup program may create a synergistic effect and aid the prevention of MetS. In Japan, a chewing function questionnaire has now been introduced into the national health checkup program. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether the questionnaire reflects dental and oral conditions and whether it helps improve general and oral health. A total of 6599 subjects who underwent health checkups or guidance specified by the Nationa

Preventive techniques in infant dental care.

Dental caries is the most prevalent disease among young people in the United States today. Yet, most parents don't realize that early dental care is the best insurance against adult dental disease. Because prevention should begin at birth, long before the first dental visit, nurse practitioners can play an important role in educating parents about the need for early attention to their children's dental health. This article presents to the nurse practitioner an overview of preventive dental techniques, including the effectiveness and application of fluorides, the value of early and regular oral

Professional dental care and survival rates in long-term care recipients: A cohort study of 1 459 163 individuals in South Korea.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the dental care pattern and survival rates of participants who received long-term care (LTC) and a matched control cohort in South Korea. BACKGROUND: Global ageing trends and the development of superaged societies pose healthcare challenges. South Korea's LTC system aids those with chronic illnesses and disabilities. Despite the link between oral health and systemic diseases, providing dental care in LTC facilities often reflects social neglect. METHODS: We identified 1 459 163 individuals eligible for LTC insurance in the Korean National Health Insurance Service dat

Consumption and direct costs of dental care for patients with head and neck cancer: A 16-year cohort study.

Patients with head and neck (H&N) cancer are commonly treated with surgery and/or radiotherapy, which can increase the risk of oral infection, dental caries, and periodontal disease. The present study investigated dental care consumption and costs in patient with H&N cancer before and after the cancer diagnosis. Data from Swedish regional and national registers were used to follow up dental care utilization and dental procedure costs. The analysis included 2,754 patients who had been diagnosed with H&N cancer (exposed cohort) in Stockholm County, Sweden, during 2000-2012 and 13,036 matched per

This final rule revises the comprehensive CHAMPUS regulation pertaining to the Expanded Active Duty Dependents Benefit Plan, or more commonly referred to as the TRICARE Family Member Dental Plan (TFMDP). The TFMDP limited eligibility to eligible dependents of active duty members (under a call or order that does not specify a period of thirty (30) day or less). Concurrent with the timeframe of the publication of the proposed rule, the Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2000 (Public Law 106-65, sec. 711) was signed into law and its provisions have been incorporated into this final rule. Use of an Oral Health-Related Quality of Life Instrument to Measure Unmet Dental Care Needs in Adults With Inherited Bleeding Disorders.

INTRODUCTION: Preventive dental care is vital for individuals with bleeding disorders to reduce the need for potentially invasive procedures. Although dental care is a mandated function of U.S. federally supported hemophilia treatment centers (HTCs), access to dental care is widely variable. Lack of both dental insurance and appropriately trained professionals restricts access to services. AIMS: The goals of this study were to estimate prevalence of unmet dental care need in an urban HTC and examine the feasibility of using the Oral Health Inventory Profile (OHIP-14) instrument to screen adul

Risk of dental malocclusion in children with upper respiratory tract disorders: A case-control study of a nationwide, population-based health claim database.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between different upper respiratory tract disorders and severe dental malocclusion in pediatric patients. METHODS: Newly diagnosed patients (N = 773) with dental malocclusion aged 8-18 years and controls (N = 3865) were identified from the health claim records of the Longitudinal Health Insurance Database 2000 of Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database. Controls were frequency matched to the cases by sex, age group, and index year. Univariate and multiple logistic regression analyses were used to evaluate the assoc

A National Review of the Interim Canada Dental Benefit: Analyzing the Uptake Among Uninsured Children Under 12.

OBJECTIVES: The Interim Canada Dental Benefit (CDB) provided financial support for the dental needs of children < 12 years old, from low-income families in Canada. Funds were distributed during two periods, Regular Period 1 (October 2022 through June 2023) and the Regular Period 2 (July 2023 through June 2024). This study evaluated the adjusted rate of child participation across provinces and territories, proportionally for children aged 0-11 who lack dental insurance, from households with a net annual income < $90,000 (Canadian). Regular dental visits are associated with earlier stage at diagnosis for oral and pharyngeal cancer.

The aim of this study was to assess the impact of dental insurance status and regularity of dental visits on early detection of oral and pharyngeal cancer. METHODS: We examined the relationship of dental insurance and frequency of dental visits with stage at diagnosis among 441 oral and pharyngeal cancer cases from a population-based study of head and neck cancer. Oral Health Inequities among CALD and Non-CALD Older Australians: A Decomposition Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Among Australia's older population, the burden of oral disease is disproportionality borne by culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities. This study aims to examine changes in untreated decay surfaces (DS) between 2004-2006 and 2017-2018 among older CALD and non-CALD Australians. METHODS: Data were sourced Australian national oral health surveys conducted in 2004-2006 and 2017-2018. An Oaxaca-Blinder decomposition analysis was used to assess the contribution of socio-demographics and dental behaviours. RESULTS: A total of 246 CALD and 2853 non-CALD dentate participa
