Fifty-six mothers of premature infants who participated in a study to reduce symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) completed the Brief COPE, a self-report inventory of coping mechanisms, the Stanford Acute Stress Reaction Questionnaire to assess acute stress disorder (ASD) and the Davidson Trauma Scale to assess PTSD. 18 % of mothers had baseline ASD while 30 % of mothers met the criteria for PTSD at the 1-month follow-up. Dysfunctional coping as measured by the Brief COPE was positively associated with elevated risk of PTSD in these mothers (RR = 1.09, 95 % CI 1.02-1.15; p = .008).

BACKGROUND: Thrombocytopenia is the commonest haematological abnormality encountered in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). The incidence in neonates varies greatly, depending upon the population studied. The aim of the present study was to study the incidence of thrombocytopenia in the neonates admitted to the NICU.
METHOD: The study was carried out in 258 consecutive eligible neonates from August 2007 to August 2009. Neonates were placed in two risk groups for thrombocytopenia, viz. high risk and low risk, depending upon the presentation, maternal history and any antenatal/perinatal ev

The incidence, aetiology and pathophysiology of pneumomediastinum (PM), an uncommon and potentially serious disease in neonates and children, were evaluated. A retrospective chart review of all patients diagnosed with PM who were hospitalised in the intensive care unit of the University Children's Hospital Zürich, Switzerland, from 2000 to 2006, was preformed. We analysed the incidence, severity and causes of PM and investigated the possible differences between neonatal and non-neonatal cases. Seven children and nine neonates were identified with PM. All patients had a good outcome. Six cases

That having a baby in hospital undergoing intensive care is a stressful experience is beyond dispute. Every parent, no matter how well-developed their own personal resources, depends to some extent on the support of others within their social system to cope with this stress. Grandparents occupy a special place in support networks and their role was studied in families with a very low birthweight baby. Both professional and lay perspectives were investigated and 93 families participated. Questionnaires were sent to family members 1 month after the baby's birth and 1 month after discharge home.

Thirty-eight of 125 premature infants who were hospitalized in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) had abnormal tympanic membrane mobility compatible with otitis media. Twenty-five of these 38 had received antibiotics within one week of otoscopic examination and were considered to have either serous otitis or partially treated bacterial otitis media; tympanocentesis was not performed in them. Tympanocentesis was performed in the remaining 13 infants who had not received antibiotics. Bacterial otitis media was confirmed in ten of the 13. Either staphylococcal (six cases) or Gram-negative ente

OBJECTIVES: Despite increased evidence that point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) has the potential to improve patient care in many clinical areas, the extent of use and training in POCUS in Canadian neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) has not been described in the literature. In this study, we aimed to explore the extent to which POCUS is being used and the need for a formal curriculum with defined POCUS competencies in the field of Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine (NPM).
METHODS: We sent a cross-sectional electronic survey to all NPM program directors and fellows in Canada. All 13 Canadian NPM prog

INTRODUCTION: To investigate the major causes of neonatal deaths in Malaysian neonatal intensive care units (NICUs).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective observational study analysed prospectively collected data of neonates (gestation ≥22 weeks, birthweight ≥500g) admitted to 44 NICUs in the years 2015-2020 in the Malaysian National Neonatal Registry. Causes of death were reported using the modified Wigglesworth classification.
RESULTS: Out of 759,435 neonates, 1.2% (n=9470) died. Most (72.3%) were early neonatal deaths (0-7days of life), 17.5% were late neonatal deaths (8-28 days of li

Background Neonates admitted in a tertiary neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) require multiple blood transfusions because of extended NICU stay and repeated sampling. The rookie organ systems and miniature blood volumes in the neonate call for regular audits in neonatal blood transfusion practice. Sharing component usage data with the blood bank will prepare them to store components according to demand, thus limiting wastage of components as well as make banks ready to face a shortage in case of ramped up requirements. Objective Auditing neonatal blood transfusion indications and identifying

BACKGROUND: Our original birth-size reference charts (the Olsen charts), published in 2010 (weight, length, head circumference) and 2015 (body mass index), had limitations, including manually defined exclusion criteria and the use of completed gestational weeks. This project aimed to update the charts and address those limitations. METHODS: We analyzed de-identified data from infants admitted to Pediatrix NICUs between 2010 and 2022. In contrast to prior work, newborns with mortality before discharge, multiple births, and congenital anomalies were included; only statistical outliers (defined a
