We reviewed the records and radiologic studies of eight patients who developed new focal neurologic abnormalities while receiving interleukin-2 (IL2)-based immunotherapy for malignancy or HIV infection. Initial confusion and delirium in the patients evolved into coma, ataxia, hemiparesis, seizures, and cortical syndromes including aphasia, apraxia, and cortical blindness. It is known that glutathione (GSH) has an immunological effect on several features of the immune system. The present study investigated the effects of GSH on interleukin-2 (IL-2) production from normal human peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL). The results showed that both exogenous GSH and 2-mercaptoethanol (2-ME) significantly increased intracellular GSH levels after PBL were incubated with both agents. Myeloablative chemo (+/- radio) therapy and rescue with ABMT has been used as final consolidation therapy in 18 patients with AML in first remission.
