Urinary dysfunction is common following delivery, especially after cesarean section. A large number of women may undergo catheterization to ascertain whether they are in retention, as ultrasound is not always available. The bladder volume in 50 women was estimated using a Bladderscan and compared to that measured by urethral catheterization. A close correlation was found (r = 0.807: P = 0.610). These results have resulted in the Bladderscan being used as an alternative to intermittent catheterization as a test of bladder overdistension following cesarean section in our unit.

PURPOSE: We investigated the changes in sexuality and quality of life that evolve after lower urinary tract reconstruction in neurologically impaired women previously treated with an indwelling urethral catheter.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 18 neurologically impaired women treated with an indwelling urethral catheter underwent bladder reconstruction. Pubovaginal sling urethral compression was required to restore perineal dryness in 13 patients and was the only operation required in conjunction with intermittent catheterization in 3. Eight patients underwent ileocystostomy, that is creat

STUDY DESIGN: This is a narrative review summarizing prevalence and background of reusing catheters for intermittent catheterization. It also compares complications related to reuse versus single use.
OBJECTIVES AND SETTING: The objective of the review is to highlight the on-going debate regarding whether reuse of catheters is as safe as single-use technique and investigate why reuse is common in some countries (for example, Australia, Canada and the United States).
METHODS: The review is the result of systematic searches in several databases (for example, MEDLINE, EMBASE and CINAHL) using p

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate follow-up treatments used after treatment of detrusor-sphincter dyssynergia (DSD) by a temporary urethral sphincter stent.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between February 1994 and June 2003, 147 men with a mean age of 41.3+/-14.4 years were treated by temporary urethral stent inserted across the external sphincter for DSD. The underlying neurologic disease was quadriplegia in 85 cases, multiple sclerosis in 24 cases and paraplegia in 21 cases. A Nissenkorn (Bard) stent was used in 130 cases and a Diabolo (Porgès) stent was used in 17 cases. All patients were either unable to o

Urethral diverticulum is a rare pathology in male patients. It is most often encountered in patients with paraplegia due to iterative catheterizations. The diagnosis of a large diverticulum is easy to make when faced with clinical symptoms, such as: repeated urinary tract infections, perineal pain and especially when there is penile swelling. We report the case of a 24-year-old patient with paraplegia and urethral diverticulum. In this case, the issue lies in the therapeutic possibilities.

Clean intermittent catheterization (CIC) is the gold standard for the management of urinary retention. Students with special healthcare needs who require CIC can be supported by school nurses who have knowledge and expertise in the management of CIC including an understanding of available products, reinforcement of proper technique, and resources available to promote student independence. This article will discuss the variety and unique features of CIC products and tips to overcoming barriers in bladder management.

BACKGROUND: Clean intermittent self-catheterisation (CISC or ISC) is used by patients/carers to empty the bladder if needed. Sometimes the urethral lumen leading out of the bladder is blocked; sometimes, the bladder (detrusor) muscle itself or the autonomic motor nerves innervating the bladder are damaged, resulting in a failure of the detrusor muscle to work, leading to a failure of the bladder being able to empty adequately. Prior consensus as to the indications and timing of CISC has yet to be provided. This article aims to provide a multidisciplinary consensus view on this subject.

BACKGROUND: A vaginal fistula is a devastating condition, affecting an estimated 2 million girls and women across Africa and Asia. There are numerous challenges associated with providing fistula repair services in developing countries, including limited availability of operating rooms, equipment, surgeons with specialized skills, and funding from local or international donors to support surgeries and subsequent post-operative care. Finding ways of providing services in a more efficient and cost-effective manner, without compromising surgical outcomes and the overall health of the patient, is p

Urinary catheterization is a common procedure for both hospital and community patients. Nurses make many of the decisions in regard to both catheter selection and subsequent catheter care. These decisions, for example, in the type of catheterization (intermittent, indwelling, urethral or suprapubic) should be made on an informed basis. Choosing the optimum catheter material and size can benefit catheter care. Encrustation can be a problem for some catheterized patients and nurses are often involved in trying to prevent or treat it. This and other aspects of catheter management including infect

Urinary catheterization is a common medico-nursing procedure in both acute and primary care. There is a variety of catheters and associated equipment available on prescription in the UK, how do nurses and other healthcare staff ensure that patients are able to access the most appropriate products for their individual needs? This article will look at the common reasons for catheterization and the rationale for the selection procedures in selecting the optimum method of catheterization, equipment selection and management options to ensure best practice for patient care. The surgical management of urinary incontinence in children is one of the most difficult challenges facing pediatric urologists today. We have critically looked at our experience using a rectus fascial sling to prevent incontinence. Eleven girls (6 to 22 years old) with urinary incontinence from neurogenic bladder dysfunction (9), surgical injury to the bladder (1) or urogenital sinus abnormality (1) comprise this study. All had failed regimens of pharmacological therapy and intermittent catheterization. Three patients had undergone prior bladder neck reconstruction and 2 an augmentation cysto

A case of secondary VUR in neurogenic bladder with meningomyelocele treated successfully with urethral catheterization is reported. A 4-month-old girl was introduced to our clinic for the management of incontinence following the closure of the meningomyelocele (below S1 level). Anal sphincter and bulbocavernous reflex was almost normal. Since the IVP revealed right hydronephrosis, an urethral catheter was indwelt immediately in order to decompress the vesical pressure. Three weeks later, the right hydronephrosis improved, but the cystogram revealed right vesicoureteral reflux. The urethral cat

Intermittent catheterization mitigates urinary retention for over 300,000 people in the US every year, but can cause microtrauma in the urothelium, compromising its barrier function and increasing the risk of pathogen entry, which may affect user health. To reduce adverse effects, intermittent catheters (ICs) with increased lubricity are used. A common strategy to enhance IC lubricity is to apply a polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) coating to ICs; however, this coating can become adhesive upon drying, potentially leading to microtrauma. An alternative approach for lubricity is the migration of integr

PURPOSE: An incompetent urethral sphincter can be a significant factor contributing to urinary incontinence in patients with neurogenic bladders. We review our experience with 12 men who underwent a puboprostatic sling.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study included 12 men (mean age 37.1 years) with neurogenic bladder due to spinal cord injury in 9 and spina bifida in 3. All patients were diagnosed with urethral incompetence based on fluorourodynamic evaluation. Medical therapy failed in all 12 patients and all complained of urine leakage with activity. All patients underwent placement of an autol

BACKGROUND: The optimal bladder management method should preserve renal function and minimize the risk of urinary tract complications. The present study is conducted to assess the overall incidence of urinary tract infections (UTI) and other urological complications in spinal cord injury patients (SCI), and to compare the incidence of these complications with different bladder management subgroups.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: 545 patients (386 males and 159 females) of traumatic spinal cord injury with the mean age of 35.4±16.2 years (range, 18 - 73 years) were included in the study. The data rega
