[Training in forensic psychiatry: comparative issues towards a rethinking of the Portuguese model].

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Forensic psychiatry has experienced a significant development in the last few decades. Several mechanisms underlie this shift, including deinstitutionalization of mental health patients and extraordinary progress in neurosciences, imaging technologies and psychology, just no name a few. This development has put in evidence specific needs for training and education. A review and comparison of forensic psychiatry training in several European countries, U.S.A. and Brazil is made. METHODS: A mixed approach was used, including a) systematic literature review (Pubmed search, 19

[A consensus definition of internal medicine and the internist].

Internal Medicine is a basic clinical specialty in Medicine, but due to it's vast field of action it is quite difficult to define. This consensus article analyzes different definitions and proposes a current definition while analyzing several aspects of the specialty along with its strengths and weaknesses. We propose to define Internal Medicine as a clinical specialty devoted to the comprehensive care of adults, from adolescence to senility, particularly the diagnosis and non surgical treatment as well as primary and secondary prevention of their diseases, in hospital or ambulatory settings.

Preparing Genetic Counselors for Advocacy Partnerships: A Novel Internship Model.

Patient advocacy organizations (PAOs) and genetic counseling have expanded in tandem with the growth of precision medicine. Genetic counseling and PAOs share important goals related to advancing genomic medicine, creating novel possibilities for synergistic collaboration, especially as the sheer number of PAOs focused on genetic conditions presents new options for genetic counselor education. While patient advocacy has long been part of genetic counseling education, there are few published reports or studies focused on how advocacy is incorporated into genetic counseling graduate training. Intern Experience Reflects Information Gathered During the Virtual Interview Process.

OBJECTIVE: The onset of the coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic brought many changes to the residency application process including transitioning to a virtual interview platform, which continues today. The transition brought many concerns from general surgery applicants about their ability to obtain adequate information about a program virtually. We sought to characterize how information presented by programs during the first ever virtual interview cycle matched the experience of general surgery interns after training at a program for 1 year. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: In May of 2022

A Systematic Review of Metrics Utilized in the Selection and Prediction of Future Performance of Residents in the United States.

Background Aligning resident and training program attributes is critical. Many programs screen and select residents using assessment tools not grounded in available evidence. This can introduce bias and inappropriate trainee recruitment. Prior reviews of this literature did not include the important lens of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). Objective This study's objective is to summarize the evidence linking elements in the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) application with selection and training outcomes, including DEI factors. Methods A systematic review was conducted on

National examination for medical residency admission: academic performance in a high-stakes test and the need for continuing education.

INTRODUCTION: Performance and selection rate of non-newly graduated physicians in a medical residency admission test as an indicator for the need of continuing education. METHODS: A database comprising 153 654 physicians who took a residency admission test in the period 2014-2018 was analysed. Performance and selection rates were assessed in relation to year of graduation and performance in medical school. RESULTS: The whole sample scored at a mean of 62.3 (SD ±8.9; range 1.11-91.11). Examinees who took the test in their year of graduation performed better (66.10) than those who took the tes

Optometric Brain Injury Curriculum in Federal Residency Training Programs: A Consensus Report.

INTRODUCTION: Brain injury often impacts the visual system. Diagnosis and treatment of visual system problems related to brain injury is a field with less settled science and more variation in practice than most specialty fields. Most optometric brain injury residency programs are in federal clinics (VA and DoD). A consensus core curriculum has been created that will allow some consistency while facilitating program strengths. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Kern's curriculum development model and a focus group of subject matter experts were used to reach consensus in producing a core curriculum to pr

PRESS and Piezo Microsurgery (Bony Lid): A 7-Year Evolution in a Residency Program-Part 2: PRESS-Defined Site Location.

INTRODUCTION: Treatment of a failing endodontic procedure via microsurgical revision presents better outcomes due, in part, to the integration of the surgical operating microscope and cone-beam computed tomography into clinical practice. However, challenges still remain with respect to the operational locations and the techniques required to address them. Posterior sites, with substantial cortical plate thicknesses and sensitive anatomy, present the dichotomy of visualization versus postsurgical regeneration of bone. The bony lid technique bridges the gap between these 2 concepts, and the appl

IUD knowledge and experience among family medicine residents.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The intrauterine device (IUD) is a highly effective contraceptive method with few contraindications; however, clinician lack of training in insertion and misconceptions about IUD risks are barriers to utilization. Previous research has shown gaps in IUD training in family medicine residency programs. METHODS: An online survey addressing experience with IUD insertion, knowledge of patient eligibility and IUD risks, and intent to insert IUDs in practice was circulated to residents at 15 US family medicine residency programs. Programs were eligible to participate if th

How medical students and residents describe the roles and characteristics of their influential clinical teachers.

PURPOSE: This study sought to identify students' perceptions about characteristics of faculty who had positively influenced their clinical education and to determine whether the students' perceptions matched those published for residents. METHOD: On exit surveys in 1997 and 1998, students graduating from Baylor College of Medicine were asked to list clinical faculty who had "significantly and positively influenced their clinical education" and to describe that influence. Using codes derived from Ullian's earlier 1994 study regarding residents' perceptions, the authors classified 1,153 written

Point-of-Care Ultrasound Training: An Assessment of Interns' Needs and Barriers to Training.

Background and objective The use of point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) is generally on the rise worldwide. However, as the epidemiology of diseases and the approach to their management vary internationally, POCUS may not be universally applicable. The resources available for medical education are generally limited. Thus, when considering the development of a training program during the internship year, we sought to determine interns' perceptions of the applicability of POCUS to clinical practice, the current skill gaps, and barriers to training. Methods  A validated questionnaire was distributed
