Changes in symptoms and interpersonal problems during the first 2 years of long-term psychoanalytic psychotherapy and psychoanalysis.

OBJECTIVES: Longitudinal measurements can provide important information regarding variations in developmental trajectories of patients in long-term treatment. The present study investigated changes in general symptoms, depression, anxiety, and interpersonal problems during the first 2 years of long-term psychoanalytic psychotherapy (PP) and psychoanalysis (PA). It was expected that interpersonal problems would diminish more slowly compared to symptomatic dysfunction. DESIGN: An accelerated longitudinal design with five consecutive measurement points across two cohorts of patients was used. M

Interpersonal psychotherapy for depressed women with sexual abuse histories: a pilot study in a community mental health center.

Depression among women with childhood sexual abuse histories has a chronic and treatment-refractory course, and is accompanied by high rates of comorbid illness and adult trauma exposures. Reducing the disproportionate burden of serious mental illness among depressed, traumatized women must be a priority in community mental health settings. Effective treatments are needed. The feasibility and effects of interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) for women with major depression and childhood trauma histories were tested. Twenty-five women in a community mental health center were enrolled in a 16-session

Effects of treatment duration and severity of depression on the maintenance of gains after cognitive-behavioral and psychodynamic-interpersonal psychotherapy.

One hundred four clients completed a mailed follow-up 1 year after completing 8 of 16 sessions of treatment, either cognitive-behavioral (CB) or psychodynamic-interpersonal (PI) psychotherapy. Although mean scores on outcome measures at 1 year suggested that gains were, in general, well maintained, only 29% of clients were asymptomatic on all 3 occasions of testing (end of treatment, 3 months and 1 year later) without recourse to further treatment. However, only 11% of those asymptomatic at end of treatment experienced relapse or recurrence of depression, albeit on the limited evidence of just

Acceptability and efficacy of a smartphone intervention informed by interpersonal psychotherapy for perinatal mental health: A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Perinatal depression is a global health concern linked to adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes. Although evidence-based psychological interventions, such as interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT), are effective, women lack access to in-person perinatal care. Smartphone-based interventions may offer scalable support; however, evidence from randomized controlled trials (RCTs) evaluating IPT-informed smartphone interventions remains limited. This study assessed the acceptability and efficacy of an IPT-informed smartphone intervention for perinatal mental well-being. METHODS: Participant

Using interpersonal process recall to compare patients' accounts of resistance in two psychotherapies for generalized anxiety disorder.

In a trial examining whether cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) could be improved by integrating motivational interviewing (MI) to target resistance, MI-CBT outperformed CBT over 12-month follow-up (Westra, Constantino, & Antony, 2016). Given that effectively addressing resistance is both a theoretically and an empirically supported mechanism of MI's additive effect, we explored qualitatively patients' experience of resistance, possibly as a function of treatment. For 5 patients from each treatment who exhibited early in-session change ambivalence, and thus were at risk for later resistance, w

Interpersonal psychotherapy versus sertraline for women with posttraumatic stress disorder following recent sexual assault: a randomized clinical trial.

Background: Sexual assault often triggers posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), a potentially chronic severe mental disorder. Most guidelines recommend selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and trauma-focused psychotherapies as treatment options. Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT), adapted for PTSD (IPT-PTSD), focuses on interpersonal consequences of trauma rather than confronting the trauma itself. Studies have found IPT-PTSD efficaciously reduced PTSD symptoms with limited attrition. No efficacy trials have compared IPT-PTSD and SSRI. We hypothesized IPT would reduce PTSD, anxiety,

Adaptations of interpersonal psychotherapy in psycho-oncology and its effects on distress, depression, and anxiety in patients with cancer: a systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: Patients with cancer experience significant psychosocial distress. Stressors include interpersonal difficulties like loneliness, isolation, thwarted belongingness, communication impediments, and conflicts. Interventions are required that address their specific psychosocial needs. Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT) is a promising concept for the treatment of psychosocial distress associated with cancer because it addresses patients' interactions and role transformations. This review aims to provide an overview of the current evidence regarding interventions for patients with cancer ba

Markers for context-responsiveness: Client baseline interpersonal problems moderate the efficacy of two psychotherapies for generalized anxiety disorder.

OBJECTIVE: To follow-up a randomized clinical trial that compared the acute and long-term efficacy of 15 sessions of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) versus CBT integrated with motivational interviewing (MI) for severe generalized anxiety disorder (GAD; Westra, Constantino, & Antony, 2016), we (a) characterized the sample's baseline interpersonal problems, and (b) analyzed the role of several theory-relevant problems as moderators of the comparative treatment effects on outcome. METHOD: We first compared clients' (N = 85) baseline interpersonal problems profile to a general clinical sample.

Community Norms and Human Rights: Supervising Haitian Colleagues on Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT) With a Depressed and Abused Pregnant Woman.

After the 2010 Haiti earthquake, Zanmi Lasante, a local health care organization, implemented a collaborative stepped-care model to address depression in community and primary care settings in rural Haiti. Specialized community health workers, the ajans santé, collaborate with local psychologists and primary care doctors to offer home-based evaluation, support, and follow-up. The services include brief interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) and/or medication to persons who met locally defined criteria for depression. A case series evaluation of a modified version of interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) for the treatment of bulimic eating disorders: a pilot study.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the therapeutic outcome of a modified form of (IPT-BNm) amongst patients with Bulimia Nervosa (BN) and Eating Disorders Not Otherwise Specified (EDNOS). METHOD: Following initial assessment, 59 patients with diagnoses of BN or EDNOS entered treatment in the form of 16 sessions of IPT-BNm. At initial assessment, patients completed measures of general psychopathology (SCL-90), Self esteem (RSE), eating psychopathology (EDE-Q), interpersonal functioning (Inventory of Interpersonal Functioning; IIP-32) and depression (BDI). At the middle and end of treatment, EDE-Q, IIP-32

An integration of cognitive-behavioral therapy and interpersonal psychotherapy for bulimia nervosa: a case study using the case formulation method.

OBJECTIVE: The current study provides an illustration of an integration of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) for the treatment of bulimia nervosa (BN), based on the case formulation strategy. METHOD: A 25-year-old Hispanic female referred herself for the treatment of eating difficulties and depressed mood. Diagnostic criteria were met for BN, major depressive episode, and alcohol abuse. Components of both CBT and IPT were utilized throughout the course of treatment. RESULTS: CBT techniques appeared to be most effective in eliminating binge eating and bi

From bench to bedside: Examining the interpersonal and affective context of borderline personality disorder as it unfolds over time in psychotherapy.

Wright et al. (2022) argued that the core of personality disorder (PD) is interpersonal in nature; thus, reconceptualizing PD as interpersonal disorders allows more focused assessment, formulation, and treatment planning. Previous research has examined the interpersonal and affective processes relevant to borderline PD (BPD), yet no study to date has investigated how these dynamics may shift in response to psychodynamic psychotherapy. We present preliminary data examining the interpersonal and affective context of BPD over time in an evidence-based treatment. Forty-five patients diagnosed with

Disagreement between therapist raters and independent evaluators in a controlled clinical trial of interpersonal psychotherapy for depressed pregnant women.

BACKGROUND: The randomized controlled trial in which both the patient and the treating clinician are kept blinded to the treatment is the "gold standard" for treatment research assignment. However, in psychotherapy research, evaluations can only be single blind; thus, such studies are inherently more limited. METHODS: A 12-week, bilingual, parallel-design, controlled clinical treatment trial compared interpersonal psychotherapy for antepartum depression (IPT-P) with a parenting education program (PEP) provided to a control group. An outpatient sample of 142 women who met DSM-IV criteria for m

Does attachment change serve as a theory-specific mediator of depression reduction in interpersonal psychotherapy versus cognitive behavioral therapy?

OBJECTIVE: Although interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for depression are comparably efficacious, less is known about the respective patient-level processes that help transmit their beneficial effect. Given its explicit and primary focus on attachment theory and relationship processes, it is plausible that IPT helps ameliorate depression specifically through decreasing patients' attachment insecurity. Testing this hypothesis, we examined whether IPT relative to CBT promoted greater increases in secure attachment during therapy, which in turn associated wit

Long-term outcomes of once weekly v. twice weekly sessions of cognitive behavioral therapy and interpersonal psychotherapy for depression.

BACKGROUND: Twice weekly sessions of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) for major depressive disorder (MDD) lead to less drop-out and quicker and better response compared to once weekly sessions at posttreatment, but it is unclear whether these effects hold over the long run. AIMS: Compare the effects of twice weekly v. weekly sessions of CBT and IPT for depression up to 24 months since the start of treatment. METHODS: Using a 2 × 2 factorial design, this multicentre study randomized 200 adults with MDD to once or twice weekly sessions of CBT or IPT over

Cognitive behavior therapy versus interpersonal psychotherapy for social anxiety disorder delivered via smartphone and computer: a randomized controlled trial.

In this study, a previously evaluated guided Internet-based cognitive behavior therapy for social anxiety disorder (SAD) was adapted for mobile phone administration (mCBT). The treatment was compared with a guided self-help treatment based on interpersonal psychotherapy (mIPT). The treatment platform could be accessed through smartphones, tablet computers, and standard computers. A total of 52 participants were diagnosed with SAD and randomized to either mCBT (n=27) or mIPT (n=25). Measures were collected at pre-treatment, during the treatment, post-treatment and 3-month follow-up. On the prim

Addressing interpersonal patterns in patients with personality disorders partially explains psychotherapy outcome via changes in interaction patterns: A mediation analysis.

Objective Many patients with personality disorders (PDs) present with problematic interaction patterns. These may also manifest in the therapeutic relationship. For successful treatment, therapists must therefore find effective ways to address such problematic interaction patterns. Methods: A total of 382 patients with PDs were recruited within a naturalistic setting and received integrative cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). Two subscales of the observer-rated Process-Content-Relationship Scale were applied to sessions 15, 20, and 25 of treatment: one on patient interaction patterns and the

Interpersonal Psychotherapy Versus Cognitive Therapy for Depression: How They Work, How Long, and for Whom-Key Findings From an RCT.

OBJECTIVE: Although the effectiveness of interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) and cognitive therapy (CT) for major depression has been established, little is known about how and for whom they work and how they compare in the long term. The latter is especially relevant for IPT because research on its long-term effects has been limited. This overview paper summarizes findings from a Dutch randomized controlled trial on the effects and mechanisms of change of IPT versus CT for major depression. METHODS: Adult outpatients with depression (N=182) were randomly assigned to CT (N=76), IPT (N=75), or a

Randomized controlled trial of interpersonal psychotherapy versus enhanced treatment as usual for women with co-occurring depression and pelvic pain.

OBJECTIVE: Our study assessed the effectiveness of Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT) tailored for biomedical patients with depression and pain. IPT was compared to enhanced treatment as usual (E-TAU) among women with co-occurring depression and chronic pain presenting for care at a women's health or family medicine practice. We hypothesized that women presenting to urban medical practices with depression and chronic pain would benefit from IPT tailored to address their needs to a greater degree than from E-TAU. METHODS: We conducted a randomized controlled psychotherapy trial of 61 women from

Interpersonal Psychotherapy in Russia: Remembering Past Losses of the Heart, Keeping Mindful of the Culture of Melancholy, and Reconnecting with a Supportive Social Environment.

BACKGROUND: The dissolution of the Soviet Union brought economic instability and variety of social changes, resulting in fluctuating suicide rates and highlighting the national phenomenon of a melancholy cultural trait across the general population. The socio-political changes in Russia post-1991 led to increased rates of depressive and stress-related disorders, as well as opening avenues for integrating foreign psychotherapeutic methods, including Interpersonal Psychotherapy (Klerman-Weissman IPT), into the treatment of mental disorders. This narrative review explores the adaptation and effic
