Academic medicine : journal of the Association of American Medical Colleges2022eng
In the 21st century, more than ever before, issues facing women in medicine, such as pay equity and workplace harassment, are being explored and attended to by physicians and health care institutions. Discussions about women in medicine almost exclusively center around women physicians, even though most women in medicine are, in fact, not physicians. In addition, these discussions typically focus on gender, often failing to consider how race, class, and other dimensions of identity influence the experiences of women in medicine. In this article, the authors argue that neoliberal feminism is th

BACKGROUND: Little prior research focused on person-centred care and support (PCCS) for dementia in home, community or outpatient care. We aimed to describe what constitutes PCCS, how to implement it, and considerations for women who comprise the majority of affected persons (with dementia, carers).
METHODS: We conducted a scoping review by searching multiple databases from 2000 inclusive to June 7, 2020. We extracted data on study characteristics and PCCS approaches, evaluation, determinants or the impact of strategies to implement PCCS. We used summary statistics to report data and interpre

This study explores the lived experiences of older migrants experiencing homelessness (OMEH) in Canada, a population situated at the intersection of multiple structural vulnerabilities. Drawing on interviews with 22 older migrants across eight housing programs in three Canadian cities, the study applies an intersectional postcolonial framework to examine how migration status, age, and systemic exclusion shape participants' sense of community, access to services, and well-being. Findings reveal that while culturally affirming relationships and activities supported a sense of belonging, particip

In response to the need for robust interventions to reduce HIV-related stigma, we used the "What Matters Most" (WMM) conceptual framework to adapt the participatory training component of the Total Facility Approach (TFA), a health facility-based stigma reduction intervention, to reduce the intersectional stigma toward pregnant women living with HIV in Botswana. We report on the adaptation and pilot testing of this intervention, which included interweaving the specific points of stigma and discrimination for pregnant and postpartum women living with HIV into the TFA training manual. Focus group

OBJECTIVE: Ending the HIV epidemic requires addressing structural determinants of health, including stigma. In this qualitative study, we applied an intersectional framework to study various forms of stigma among Latinx people living with HIV (PLWH).
METHOD: We conducted focus groups and individual interviews with Spanish- and English-speaking Latinx PLWH (N = 19) at an HIV safety-net clinic in San Francisco, California. Using thematic analysis, we identified co-occurring forms of stigma impacting the participants' lives.
RESULTS: Participants described the weight of co-occuring stigma relat

INTRODUCTION: Migrant women's opportunities for active aging, understood through the World Health Organization framework of health, participation, and security, are shaped by cumulative inequalities across the life course. In European higher education, migrant women academics often experience delayed academic consolidation through trajectories marked by precarious employment, disrupted institutional and relational ties, constrained recognition, and normative expectations that privilege linear and uninterrupted careers. This article examines how and why migrant women academics experience delaye

Gothic literature-a genre brimming with madness, supernaturalism, and psychological terror-offers innumerable case studies potentially representing how psychiatric patients perceive their treatment from healthcare professionals. Charlotte Perkins Gilman's famous 1892 short story "The Yellow Wallpaper" offers a poignant example of this through its fictional narrator, a diarist many interpret to be suffering from postpartum depression. The fiction here does not stray far from reality: Gilman orchestrated her diarist's experience to mirror her own, as both real author and fictional character suff

The promise of COVID-19 vaccines in ending the pandemic can only be achieved by overcoming the challenge of vaccine refusal. Healthcare workers (HCWs) are the trusted advisors of vaccination decisions. Recommendations for vaccinating children against COVID-19 are recently gaining more public health attention due to the role of children in disease transmission and associated morbidities. Vaccination is one of the first medical decisions parents or guardians make on behalf of their children. To investigate the determinants associated with vaccine acceptability among the general population throug

Marginalized populations experience increased eating disorder (ED) risk and encounter significant barriers to treatment. Intersectionality provides a framework for understanding how systemic oppression contributes to inequities in EDs; however, intersectional approaches have yet to be applied to a clinical ED sample. The current study examined inequities in ED severity and treatment outcome across the intersections of race/ethnicity, sexual orientation, and socioeconomic status (SES). Adult women (N=3016; M = 27.2 years) with transdiagnostic EDs presenting to affiliated treatment sites across

Gay men with HIV face stigma associated with both their sexual orientation and their HIV status. The intersectional stigma framework suggests that the co-occurrence and internalization of multiple stigmas may harm mental health. In the context of Türkiye, limited public discussion about HIV and sexual diversity may contribute to intersectional stigma experiences. In total, 255 Turkish gay men with HIV completed validated measures of internalized HIV stigma, internalized homophobia, and depression symptoms. Two analytic techniques recommended for intersectional effects were conducted: multiple

The perspective of intersectionality has gained widespread scholarly interest and been employed across many different disciplines, including criminology. This perspective focuses on interlocking systems of oppression and the need to work toward structural changes to promote social justice and equity. The present article aimed to explore the potential of intersectionality for advancing health research and policy regarding justice-involved women, in different phases of the judicial process, based on the extant literature.First, employing an intersectional approach to analyze the issue of health

The 2021 expansion of the Child Tax Credit provided advance monthly cash transfers to most US households with children. Although prior evaluations documented overall improvements in household well-being, less is known about variation by household structure. This study examined policy-period changes in parental mental health and material hardship among female-headed households. Using data from 1.3 million respondents to the Census Bureau's Household Pulse Survey (2020-25) and an intersectional framework, we applied difference-in-differences and multilevel models to estimate changes in parental

In this case study, we propose a network analysis approach to map social movements through an intersectional feminist lens. We aim to gain a more in-depth understanding of movements' network structures to examine the roles and relationships of movement actors, the flow of resources between them, and potential areas of collaboration and conflict. By incorporating Social Network Analysis (SNA) techniques and visually mapping dynamics within social movements, this approach can assess the significance of small actors in creating change and stresses the need for their perspectives to be heard. Cyberzone is a fitting place to start any discussion around Black lesbian identity in comics, as it is the first comic book that this researcher could find which features a Black lesbian female lead superheroine. Cyberzone was self-published by Jimmie Robinson in 1994 and later re-vamped into a mini-comic series called Amanda and Gunn with Image Comics. First, this article deconstructs Cyberzone through the lens of Cultural Prism Theory (CPT). Second, this article situates Cyberzone within the framework of CPT to address Cyberzone's place within the comic book ecosystem. Finally, this essay of

This paper studies the influence of built environment (BE) - including land use types, road network connectivity, transit supply and demographic characteristics - on pedestrian activity and pedestrian-vehicle collision occurrence. For this purpose, a two-equation modeling framework is proposed to investigate the effect of built environment on both pedestrian activity and vehicle-pedestrian collision frequency at signalized intersections. Using accident data of ambulance services in the City of Montreal, the applicability of our framework is illustrated. Different model settings were attempted

The U.S. overdose crisis is now driven by polysubstance use involving fentanyl and stimulants. We received funding through the National Institutes on Drug Abuse's Helping to End Addiction Long-Term (HEAL) initiative to conduct longitudinal qualitative research on polysubstance use among people experiencing homelessness (PEH) in San Francisco, California. An Intersectional Risk Environment Framework was used to examine the interaction between social, structural, and environmental factors and overdose vulnerability. During the data collection period, San Francisco implemented multiple policies t

This study aims to explore if and how cultural beliefs, norms, and practices might contribute to Nigerian women's experiences of sexual abuse and violence. In-depth narrative interviews were conducted with 12 women of Nigerian origin living in the Northwest of England who had experienced sexual abuse and violence. Women's accounts were analyzed thematically, and drawing upon a feminist-intersectional conceptual framework, analysis reveals that male privilege defined by gendered role and expectation, religious beliefs, rape myths, and bride-price with the associated practice of libation may hav

OBJECTIVES: Generative artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly being used to analyze and interpret health disparities data, but its accuracy, analytical depth, and ability to recognize intersectional and structural inequities remain uncertain. This benchmarking study evaluated the performance of ChatGPT (GPT-5.2), Google Gemini 3, and Claude Sonnet 4.5 in analyzing an existing dataset on racial and gender representation in US academic ophthalmology.
METHODS: Publicly available Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) Faculty Roster data for ophthalmology from 1966 to 2021 were ana

BACKGROUND: Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) disproportionately affect vulnerable populations in Argentina, yet the equity dimensions of patient information leaflets (PILs) for NTD treatments remain unexplored. This study analysed PILs of drugs available in Argentina for treating NTDs from an intersectional and health equity perspective using the PROGRESS-Plus framework.
METHODS: A systematic documentary analysis was conducted on 139 PILs covering 13 endemic NTDs in Argentina, identified through official pharmaceutical databases (March-December 2024). A double-entry matrix recorded the pres

BACKGROUND: In the past decade, an increasing number of studies have addressed health care disparities and the complex determinants of care for diverse populations. At the same time, it remains unclear how social categories (e.g. gender, ethnicity, migration status, socioeconomic position) intersect with health care disparities for people living with dementia and may lead to experiences of inequity and inequality.
AIM: This scoping review analyzes the use of intersectionality frameworks and intersection analyses in dementia care research over the past decade (2015-2025).
