Intervertebral disc calcification in childhood is benign and uncommon. The prognosis is good. Clinically, it is marked by torticollis with neck pain and stiffness. Sometimes, appearances suggestive of sepsis may lead to false diagnosis. The diagnosis is made on good radiological examination which shows opacity of the disc and no other abnormality, though with a tendency to forward protrusion. Healing takes place spontaneously after several days and the calcification disappears after about a year, after a stage of fragmentation. Complications are rare. Treatment should be conservative and sympt

PURPOSE: This study aims to use ultrasound guidance to locate the intervertebral disc (IVD) of a mouse caudal spine, establish a mouse model of IVD herniation by needle puncture and cyclic pump pressure, and perform ultrasound to longitudinally detect paravertebral tissue swelling to help evaluate the pathological progression after IVD herniation.
METHODS: An animal ultrasound was used to scan the caudal spine of mice to locate the IVDs. IVD herniation was induced in the mice by puncturing the caudal IVDs (Co4/5, Co5/6, and Co6/7) with a 26-G needle and applying cyclic pump pressure using an

Since the seminal work by Hans-Jörgen Hansen in 1952, it has been assumed that intervertebral disc (IVD) degeneration in chondrodystrophic (CD) dogs involves chondroid metaplasia of the nucleus pulposus, whereas in nonchondrodystrophic (NCD) dogs, fibrous metaplasia occurs. However, more recent studies suggest that IVD degeneration in NCD and CD dogs is more similar than originally thought. Therefore, the aim of this study was to compare the histopathology of IVD degeneration in CD and NCD dogs. IVDs with various grades of degeneration (Thompson grade I-III, n = 7 per grade) from both CD and N

Intervertebral disc degeneration (IVDD) is commonly framed as the cumulative result of extracellular matrix loss, inflammatory activation, oxidative damage, cellular senescence and cell death. This formulation is useful, but it also fragments the disease into parallel mechanisms and obscures a central paradox: nucleus pulposus and annulus fibrosus cells normally reside in a microenvironment that would be hostile to most mammalian cells. The healthy disc is avascular, diffusion limited, hypoxic, glycolytic, relatively acidic and mechanically loaded. These features are not simply pathological in

BACKGROUND: Intervertebral disc degeneration (IVDD) is one of the etiologic factors of degenerative spinal diseases, which can lead to a variety of pathological spinal conditions such as disc herniation, spinal stenosis, and scoliosis. IVDD is a leading cause of lower back pain, the prevalence of which increases with age. Recently, Sirtuins/SIRTs and their related activators have received attention for their activity in the treatment of IVDD. In this paper, a comprehensive systematic review of the literature on the role of SIRTs and their activators on IVDD in recent years is presented. The mo

The burden of disease regarding lumbar and cervical spine pain is a long-standing, pervasive problem within medicine that has yet to be resolved. Specifically, neck and back pain are associated with chronic pain, disability, and exorbitant health care use worldwide, which have only been exacerbated by the increase in overall life years and chronic disease. Traditionally, patients with significant pain and disability secondary to disease of either the cervical or lumbar spine are treated via fusion or discectomy. Although these interventions have proved curative in the short-term, numerous long

Intervertebral disc (IVD) degeneration is one of the major causes of lower back pain, a common health condition that greatly affects the quality of life. With an increasing elderly population and changes in lifestyle, there exists a high demand for novel treatment strategies for damaged IVDs. Researchers have investigated IVD tissue engineering (TE) as a way to restore biological and mechanical functions by regenerating or replacing damaged discs using scaffolds with suitable cells. These scaffolds can be constructed using material extrusion additive manufacturing (AM), a technique used to bui

The complex structure of the intervertebral disc within the spine is well suited to its mechanical function. However, it is also prone to degeneration, which is associated with various clinical symptoms and conditions, ranging from disc herniation to back pain to spinal stenosis. Most patients' conditions are managed conservatively but a small proportion progress to having surgery. This may be decompression (to remove tissue such as the disc, bone, or hypertrophic ligaments impinging on nerves) or fusion of the normally mobile intervertebral joint to immobilize it and so reduce pain. These use

Intervertebral disc calcification is rare in the pediatric population and is associated with sudden neurological manifestations. Although commonly symptomatic, conservative management yields excellent prognosis in the vast majority of cases. The following case illustrates the finding of intervertebral disc calcification in a patient with vertebral body segmentation anomaly consistent with Klippel-Feil Syndrome. As both entities are associated with potential neurological sequelae, this case of coexistent pathologies highlights the importance of recognizing the potential presence of intervertebr

Intervertebral disc (IVD) degeneration (IDD) is associated with low back pain and significantly affects the patient's quality of life. Degeneration of the IVD alters disk height and the mechanics of the spine, leading to chronic segmental spinal instability. The pathophysiology of IVD disease is still not well understood. Current therapies for IDD include conservative and invasive approaches, but none of those treatments are able to restore the disc structure and function. Recently, tissue engineering techniques emerged as a possible approach to treat IDD, by replacing a damaged IVD with scaff

Degenerative disc disease is a progressive, chronic disorder with strong association to pain, where the dysregulated tissue environment signals disc cells, thereby leading to a low inflammatory process and slow extracellular matrix degradation and fibrosis in a perpetual vicious cycle, generating a structural and functional failure of intervertebral disc joint (IVDJ). Among current biologic therapies, there is an emerging minimally invasive strategy that consists of infiltrating plasma rich in growth factors, a safe and efficacious therapeutic approach for other musculoskeletal degenerative co

Back pain is the leading cause of disability globally and the second most common cause of doctors' visits. Despite extensive research efforts, the underlying mechanism of back pain has not been fully elucidated. The intervertebral disc (IVD) is a viscoelastic tissue that provides flexibility to the spinal column and acts as a shock absorber in the spine. When viscoelastic materials like the IVD are cyclically loaded, they dissipate energy as heat. Thus, diurnal, regular movements of the vertebral column that deform the IVD could increase disc temperature through viscoelastic heating. This temp

Intervertebral disc regeneration field is rapidly growing since disc disorders represent a major health problem in industrialized countries with very few possible treatments. Indeed, current available therapies are symptomatic, and surgical procedures consist in disc removal and spinal fusion, which is not immune to regardable concerns about possible comorbidities, cost-effectiveness, secondary risks and long-lasting outcomes. This review paper aims to share recent advances in stem cell therapy for the treatment of intervertebral disc degeneration. In literature the potential use of different

A butterfly vertebra is a rare congenital anomaly that is usually asymptomatic. The authors, however, describe a novel case involving a butterfly vertebra overlapping with disc herniation that presented as radiculopathy. A butterfly vertebra is characterized by a symmetrical fusion defect resulting in a sagittal cleft vertebra. Only a few cases of butterfly vertebrae have been reported as incidental findings. This spinal anomaly may be associated with other congenital conditions such as Pfeiffer, Crouzon, Jarcho-Levin, and Alagille syndromes. Moreover, there is no previous report of a case ass

The lumbar intervertebral discs (L3-6) were ablated through a transperitoneal approach in 12 adult dogs by using Nd: YAG laser (1.06 microns) with a 600 microns quartz fiber. The status of limbs motion and sphincter (bladder, bowel) was observed for evaluating the safety of laser irradiation. After irradiation, the animals were sacrificed at prescribed intervals of up to 40 weeks (2, 4, 8, 12 and 40 weeks after operation). The lumbar intervertebral discs were harvested and subjected to light microscopic observation. No dog had suffered from neurogenic dysfunction of limb motion and sphincter.

Low back pain is common throughout the adult years in both men and women; first episodes most frequently occur among people in their 20s and 30s. Prolapsed lumbar disc most often affects individuals in the age range 25-45 years; prolapses occur infrequently in persons below 20 years or over 65 years. Major risk factors for low back pain in general and for prolapsed disc specifically include frequent lifting of objects weighing 25 pounds or more, especially if the objects are lifted with the arms extended and with the knees straight and if the lifting is done while the body is twisted; exposure

Intervertebral disc disease in the dog is a common problem in veterinary medicine. The clinician must understand the pathophysiology of disc extrusions so the owner can be informed properly when medical versus surgical treatment is indicated. Intervertebral disc surgery requires the same preoperative considerations as any other surgery would: knowledge of regional anatomy, proper equipment, and good surgical techniques and tissue handling. The spinal cord is an unforgiving structure, forcing the surgeon to understand and to avoid intraoperative complications. Some complications are inevitable.
