OBJECTIVES: Bowel segments distal to a congenital intestinal obstruction have been suggested to be immature. In other words, luminal components such as amniotic fluid (before birth) and/or enteral nutrition (after birth) may be required to activate intestinal epithelial protein expression, thereby influencing epithelial differentiation. We investigated cell-type-specific protein expression proximal and distal to jejunal and ileal atresias in human newborns.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We immunohistochemically studied intestinal tissue specimens of 16 newborns who had undergone surgery for jejunal o

We have experienced six cases of umbilical cord ulcer that resulted in life-threatening antenatal fetal haemorrhage. Fetal distress and bloody amniotic fluid that led to intrauterine and neonatal death in four patients complicated the pregnancy courses. The remaining two infants are still alive. All the infants had upper intestinal atresia below the papilla of Vater. Pathologically, umbilical arteries and surrounding Wharton's jelly were necrotic in all cases. Activated macrophages containing pigment granules were present within the ulcer bed, necrotic areas of Wharton's jelly and fetal membra

Intestinal atresia is one of the most common and complex congenital deformity of neonatal life causing intestinal obstruction. It has four sub-types based on the anatomy of the atresia. Among these four types, Type-IV, which involves multiple atresia segments, is the most severe and rare with high mortality. The biggest surgical challenge is to save enough gut length to prevent long-term complications like short gut syndrome. Early diagnosis and surgical intervention with the right procedure choice is key for survival. Additionally, postoperative neonatal care, parenteral nutrition, and early

BACKGROUND: Jejunal atresia with short bowel syndrome is an unusual type of jejunoileal atresia. They present with jejunal atresia near the ligament of Treitz and a foreshortened small bowel. In this paper, we report our preliminary experience to emphasize the advantages and feasibility of enteroplasty for intestinal lengthening and primary anastomosis with an anterior flap in jejunal atresia with short bowel syndrome in neonates.
METHODS: Between January 2014 and December 2014, four neonates with jejunal atresia and short bowel syndrome were submitted to this procedure in our hospital. Enter

The syndromic form of biliary atresia accounts for 10-25% and is associated with a poor prognosis due to associated anomalies. We report a case of extrahepatic biliary atresia and polysplenia syndrome with jaundice since 19th day of life and who had undergone surgical correction of malrotation in the neonatal period. Inspite of successful Kasai's portoenterostomy at 52nd day of life, the child succumbed to post-operative sepsis.

BACKGROUND: The epidemiology of congenital small intestinal atresia (SIA) has not been well studied. This study describes the presence of additional anomalies, pregnancy outcomes, total prevalence and association with maternal age in SIA cases in Europe.
METHODS: Cases of SIA delivered during January 1990 to December 2006 notified to 20 EUROCAT registers formed the population-based case series. Prevalence over time was estimated using multilevel Poisson regression, and heterogeneity between registers was evaluated from the random component of the intercept.
RESULTS: In total 1133 SIA cases w

Gastroschisis and small intestinal atresia (SIA) are birth defects that are thought to arise from vascular disruption of fetal mesenteric vessels. Previous studies of gastroschisis have suggested that risk is increased for maternal use of vasoactive over-the-counter medications, including specific analgesics and decongestants. This retrospective study evaluated the relation between maternal use of cough/cold/analgesic medications and risks of gastroschisis and SIA. From 1995 to 1999, the mothers of 206 gastroschisis cases, 126 SIA cases, and 798 controls in the United States and Canada were in

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the causes, clinical presentation, diagnosis, operative management, postoperative care, and outcome in infants with intestinal atresia.
DESIGN: Retrospective case series.
SETTING: Pediatric tertiary care teaching hospital.
PATIENTS: A population-based sample of 277 neonates with intestinal atresia and stenosis treated from July 1, 1972, through April 30, 1997. The level of obstruction was duodenal in 138 infants, jejunoileal in 128, and colonic in 21. Of the 277 neonates, 10 had obstruction in more than 1 site. Duodenal atresia was associated with prematurity (46%), m

Lesions identical to those observed in human intestinal atresia (IA) have been experimentally reproduced in several mammal models by either mesenteric vessels or intestinal wall injury. The recent availability of an avian model led us to investigate whether the same lesions could be studied at less expense. An intestinal loop within the body stalk hernia was coagulated on the 12th incubation day in 427 chick embryos (group 3), the lesions were studied in survivors 4 days later under light and scanning electronmicroscopy (EM), and the findings were compared with those in 12 control embryos (gro

Mesenteric defects can lead to intestinal volvulus even when the midgut is normally rotated. There are two types of mesenteric defects: basilar, in which the entire base of the mesentery is involved, and segmental, in which only an isolated portion of the mesentery is affected. These defects can present at any age, and the clinical symptoms depend on the extent of the disease and the amount of intestine involved in the volvulus. In the newborn, the basilar defects have clinical signs and symptoms similar to those of midgut volvulus secondary to malrotation. Similar to midgut volvulus secondary

INTRODUCTION: Intestinal atresia is the complete occlusion of the intestinal lumen at various parts of the intestine. It has the potential to cause intestinal failure. Two mechanisms are suggested: failure of recanalization and/or accidental injury. This case report aims to discuss an exceptionally rare case of congenital total intestinal atresia.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 1-day-old male neonate, Tigrian ethnic of Ethiopia born at term, was brought to our hospital with the complaint of repeated vomiting and abdominal distension soon after birth. On examination, he had stable vital signs and a mini

Intestinal atresia is an under-diagnosed congenital defect in cattle. It results in complete occlusion of the intestinal lumen and, unless surgically corrected, results in death or euthanasia of the affected calf. There is limited information on the incidence of this condition or on risk factors, including predisposing alleles, associated with the defect. In this study, active surveillance of 39 dairy farms over 8 years identified 197 cases of intestinal atresia among 56 454 calves born, an incidence of 0.35%. The majority of cases (83%) had occlusion of the jejunum, although cases with blocka

Hereditary multiple intestinal atresia (HMIA) is a rare form of intestinal atresia that affects the gastrointestinal tract from the pylorus to the rectum. A few cases have been reported in the literature. Here, we report the case of a three-day-old girl who was referred to our hospital as a case of upper intestinal obstruction. After initial resuscitation, the radiological examination revealed pyloric obstruction, multiple intra-abdominal calcifications, and rectal atresia making the diagnosis of HMIA most likely. Exploratory laparotomy revealed multiple intestinal atresia, the first started a

INTRODUCTION: Neonatal surgical diseases are prime examples of the global disparity in surgical access and outcomes, with survival for conditions like gastroschisis reaching above 95% in high-income settings but usually fatal in low-income settings. This study aims to examine outcomes and predictors of mortality in patients with two specific neonatal surgical conditions that often require early transfer and prolonged inpatient care (gastroschisis and intestinal atresia) at Rwanda's main pediatric referral hospital.
METHODS: A single-institution retrospective chart review of neonates with gast

Hereditary multiple intestinal atresia is a rare syndrome with an autosomal recessive pattern of inheritance. We described the antenatal sonographic appearance of a case of hereditary multiple intestinal atresia. A markedly dilated cystic mass noncommunicating with the stomach was observed in the right upper quadrant of the fetal abdomen by an ultrasound scan at 30 weeks of gestation. Real-time sonographic evidence of strong peristaltic activity was not demonstrated. The infant weighing 2315 g was delivered at 35 week's gestation with Apgar scores of 7 and 9 at 1 and 5 minutes, respectively. A
