Visual and somatic sensory feedback of brain activity for intuitive surgical robot manipulation.

This paper presents a method to evaluate the hand-eye coordination of the master-slave surgical robot by measuring the activation of the intraparietal sulcus in users brain activity during controlling virtual manipulation. The objective is to examine the changes in activity of the intraparietal sulcus when the user's visual or somatic feedback is passed through or intercepted. The hypothesis is that the intraparietal sulcus activates significantly when both the visual and somatic sense pass feedback, but deactivates when either visual or somatic is intercepted. The brain activity of three subj

On the nature of intuitive and delusional thought: its implications in clinical work with psychotic patients.

The author tries to differentiate intuitive imagination from delusional imagination and hypothesises that psychosis alters the system of intuitive thinking, which consequently cannot develop in a dynamic and selective way. Scholars of different disciplines, far removed from psychoanalysis, such as Einstein, Hadamard or Poincaré, believe that intuitive thinking works in the unconscious by means of hidden processes, which permit a creative meeting of ideas. Thanks to Bion's work, psychoanalysts have begun to understand that waking thinking is unconsciously intertwined with dream-work. The delusi

Intuition and meaning in life in persons with varying level of depressive symptoms and impairments in personality functioning.

OBJECTIVES: The current research explored the interplay between intuition, meaning in life, and psychopathology. Specifically, we investigated whether experiential and reflective components of meaning in life are associated with depressive symptoms and personality pathology, whether intuition is related to the experience of meaning, and whether psychopathology has disruptive effects on intuition as well as on the link between intuition and the experience of meaning. METHODS: We tested our preregistered hypotheses in two independent studies. In Study 1, N = 448 participants completed self-repo

Insight of oral vaccines as an alternative approach to health and disease management: An innovative intuition and challenges.

Vaccination is the most suitable and persuasive healthcare program for the prohibition of various deadly diseases. However, the higher production cost and purification strategies are out of reach for the developing nations. In this scenario, development of edible vaccine turns out to be the most promising alternative for remodeling the pharmaceutical industry with reduced production and purification costs. Generally, oral route of vaccination is mostly preferred due to its safety, compliance, low manufacturing cost and most importantly the ability to induce immunity in both systemic and mucosa

[Moderate or severe aquired valvular heart disease in pregnancy--what does determine the management? Experence, intuition or guidelines?].

Epidemiology of acquired valvular heart diseases has changed significantly over last decades. Degenerative aortic valve stenosis is the most common acquired valvular disease with high prevalence in elderly population. Another common disorder is ischemic mitral regurgitation secondary to myocardial infarction. Both above-mentioned heart disorders are not typical for women in reproductive age. Rheumatic heart valve disease has become infrequent in Polish population. Mitral stenosis, the most prevalent of rheumatic valvular disorders, affects 5% of pregnant women with heart disease and rheumatic

A Smartphone App to Improve Intuitive Eating and Diet Quality: Design and Usability Study.

BACKGROUND: Web-based and mobile phone-based apps have become widely available for dietary self-monitoring; however, their use may increase the risk of disordered eating. College students frequently demonstrate poor nutrient intake despite consumption of sufficient calories. One way to improve diet quality may be via the use of a smartphone app that encourages intuitive eating. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to improve diet quality among college students through the use of a novel smartphone app that promotes intuitive eating rather than calorie counting and weight loss. METHODS: T

Associations between intuitive eating and health behaviors and physical health in U.S. adults.

Intuitive eating is a non-diet approach that emphasizes eating in response to hunger and fullness cues that has potential as a sustainable health promotion framework. Although research demonstrates that intuitive eating is strongly associated with psychological health, less is known about its associations with health behaviors and physical health. We examined how intuitive eating related to lifestyle behaviors and chronic disease diagnosis in a large, diverse U.S. adult sample. Adults aged ≥ 18 years residing in the U.S. were recruited from CloudResearch's Connect platform to complete a cross-

Computational models reveal that intuitive physics underlies visual processing of soft objects.

Computational explorations of human cognition have been especially successful when applied to visual perception. Existing models have primarily focused on rigid objects, emphasizing shape-preserving invariance to changes in viewpoint, lighting, object size, and scene context. Yet many objects in our everyday environments, such as cloths, are soft. This poses both quantitatively greater and qualitatively different challenges for models of perception, due to soft objects' dynamic and high-dimensional internal structure, as in the changing folds and wrinkles of a cloth waving in the wind. Soft ob

SCAview: an Intuitive Visual Approach to the Integrative Analysis of Clinical Data in Spinocerebellar Ataxias.

With SCAview, we present a prompt and comprehensive tool that enables scientists to browse large datasets of the most common spinocerebellar ataxias intuitively and without technical effort. Basic concept is a visualization of data, with a graphical handling and filtering to select and define subgroups and their comparison. Several plot types to visualize all data points resulting from the selected attributes are provided. The underlying synthetic cohort is based on clinical data from five different European and US longitudinal multicenter cohorts in spinocerebellar ataxia type 1, 2, 3, and 6

Like parent, like child? Intuitive eating among emerging adults and their parents.

Intuitive eating (IE) emphasizes relying on hunger and satiety cues to guide eating, and is associated with positive mental health and health-promoting behaviors. Although parents' own eating patterns often shape those of their children, no known research has explored familial associations of IE. The purpose of this cross-sectional, population-based study was to examine IE concordance between emerging adults and their parents, and whether concordance differed across sociodemographic characteristics and weight perceptions. The analytic sample included 891 emerging adults (M age = 22.0) and thei

The Influence of Mindful Eating and/or Intuitive Eating Approaches on Dietary Intake: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Stimuli that promote eating in the absence of the physiological need for food are pervasive and can facilitate excessive energy intake. The practices of mindful eating (ME) and intuitive eating (IE) have been developed to minimize external drivers of energy intake by helping individuals emphasize the sensory properties of foods and internal indicators of hunger and fullness. OBJECTIVE: To enhance understanding about the effect of ME and IE interventions on dietary intake, this systematic review included randomized trials of ME and IE interventions that examined dietary intake, def

A Novel Intuitively Controlled Articulating Instrument for Reoperative Foregut Surgery: A Case Report.

The field of laparoscopic surgery has continued to grow exponentially over the years, prompting new innovative technologies. Despite substantial advancements, standard laparoscopic tools have undergone little design changes and fail to optimize mobility in limited spaces. Advancements in robotics have attempted to address this, allowing for increasing degrees of freedom and articulation of instruments. Even so, this system has proven to be cumbersome with questionable cost-effectiveness. In this study, we present the first use of a solely mechanical intuitively controlled articulating laparosc

Intuitive control of a powered prosthetic leg during ambulation: a randomized clinical trial.

IMPORTANCE: Some patients with lower leg amputations may be candidates for motorized prosthetic limbs. Optimal control of such devices requires accurate classification of the patient's ambulation mode (eg, on level ground or ascending stairs) and natural transitions between different ambulation modes. OBJECTIVE: To determine the effect of including electromyographic (EMG) data and historical information from prior gait strides in a real-time control system for a powered prosthetic leg capable of level-ground walking, stair ascent and descent, ramp ascent and descent, and natural transitions b

Intuitive eating is associated with glycaemic control in adolescents with type I diabetes mellitus.

BACKGROUND: While there have been considerable advances in the medical management of type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM), for many, glycaemic control remains substandard. Nutrition and eating behaviour are important additional factors to consider with regards to T1DM management and outcomes. Intuitive eating is one such factor, and has not previously been investigated in T1DM. With this in mind, we undertook a study examining the relationship between intuitive eating and glycaemic control in adolescents with T1DM. METHODS: A case-control study of adolescents with established T1DM, and age/sex mat

Intuitive interactionism in person perception: effects of situation--behavior relations on dispositional judgments.

To examine the effects of the relationships between behavior and the situation in which it occurs, we manipulated such relations and exposed subjects to them. Impressions were similar when based on the behaviors presented with situations unspecified (e.g., child hits) or when the situations in which they naturally occurred were specified (e.g., child hits when provoked). However, when situations were specified, subjects' impressions more accurately predicted individual differences in the children's actual levels of overall aggressive behavior. When the veridical situation-behavior relations we

Intelligence without intuition: a mixed-methods pilot study on reasoning models in musculoskeletal physiotherapy for low-back pain.

Musculoskeletal pain, especially low-back pain, is highly prevalent and often challenging to manage due to its multifactorial nature. Effective diagnosis and therapy require clinicians to integrate biopsychosocial information within an evidence-based clinical reasoning framework. Large language models that "think" before responding, so-called reasoning models, show promise to support such complex decision-making, yet their validity and reliability in this setting remain unclear. In our work, we present a comprehensive human evaluation of reasoning models for clinical reasoning. Our results ind

Gut feelings in obstetrics and midwifery: the role of intuition in deciding when to perform cesarean section during labor.

PURPOSE: To describe the role of intuition for maternity care workers in deciding when a cesarean section should be advised during labor. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Focus group discussions with midwives and gynecologists, and nonparticipating observation at an obstetric ward. RESULTS: The decision about when to propose a cesarean section during labor is the result of interaction between objective and intuitive factors. Junior delivery ward workers report that they use more analytic reasoning for objective diagnosis of fetal distress, non-progressive labor, macrosomia or other indications for cesa
