Evolutionary transition to XY sex chromosomes associated with Y-linked duplication of a male hormone gene in a terrestrial isopod.

Sex chromosomes are highly variable in some taxonomic groups, but the evolutionary mechanisms underlying this diversity are not well understood. In terrestrial isopod crustaceans, evolutionary turnovers in sex chromosomes are frequent, possibly caused by Wolbachia, a vertically-transmitted endosymbiont causing male-to-female sex reversal. Here, we use surgical manipulations and genetic crosses, plus genome sequencing, to examine sex chromosomes in the terrestrial isopod Trachelipus rathkei. Although an earlier cytogenetics study suggested a ZZ/ZW sex chromosome system in this species, we surpr

Influence of compost addition on lead and arsenic bioavailability in reclaimed orchard soil assessed using Porcellio scaber bioaccumulation test.

Long-term application of lead arsenate in orchards has led to a significant accumulation of Pb and As in the topsoil. Reclamation of old orchards for agricultural purposes entails the exposure of humans to Pb and As, which can be reduced by adequate remediation actions. In this study, we assessed the remediation efficiency of compost addition, commonly used as a sustainable agricultural practice, in decreasing the human exposure Pb and As by direct ingestion. The remediation was evaluated based on Pb and As bioavailability, assessed by means of a selective non-exhaustive chemical extraction (m

Hooked on you: shape of attachment structures in cymothoid isopods reflects parasitic strategy.

BACKGROUND: Parasite attachment structures are critical traits that influence effective host exploitation and survival. Morphology of attachment structures can reinforce host specificity and niche specialisation, or even enable host switching. Therefore, it is important to understand the determinants of variation in attachment structures. Cymothoid isopods are striking ectoparasites of fishes that include the infamous 'tongue-biters.' They are known to parasitise hosts in one of four qualitatively distinct anatomical regions. Here, we quantify variation in cymothoid attachment structures - hoo

Sex chromosomes and chromosomal rearrangements contribute to behavioral sexual isolation in Jaera albifrons marine isopods.

We focus on the evolution of behavioral sexual isolation through the empirical study of two marine isopod species. The males of Jaera albifrons and Jaera praehirsuta engage females in tactile courtship by brushing the female's back, but they do so with divergent sets of specialized setae, and female choice results in strong reproductive isolation. Using RADseq-derived genotypes of individuals from natural populations and controlled crosses, we found that secondary contacts between J. albifrons and J. praehirsuta resulted in different levels of heterospecific gene flow. Comparison of the genomi

Deep-sea megafauna co-opts microbial energy metabolism genes to withstand ultra-long starvation.

The deep-sea supergiant isopod is renowned for surviving over 5 years without food, which is a crucial adaptive trait for megafauna inhabiting extreme environments. Here, morphological, physiological, and genomic comparisons of deep-sea isopods reveal a dual adaptive strategy underlying this trait: a distended, food-retentive stomach that enables episodic hyperphagia and a markedly reduced basal metabolic rate (BMR). Notably, central to this adaptation is the ancient horizontal acquisition of the microbial energy metabolism-related gene ND1, which thereafter achieved significant dosage enhance

Identification of a sex-determining region potentially involved in resolving genetic conflicts over sex ratio.

Sex-determining genes remain largely uncharacterized outside classical models in vertebrates and insects, leaving a gap in our understanding of their evolutionary emergence. The terrestrial isopod Armadillidium vulgare provides an excellent model for investigating this question, as it presents multiple genetic sex determinants. Some lineages possess a masculinizing dominant allele at a locus called the 'M gene', which is analogous to an XY system. This allele is hypothesized to have been selected due to the deficit of males caused by a non-Mendelian feminizing factor previously described. The

Toxicity mechanisms of plastic nanoparticles in three terrestrial species: antioxidant system imbalance and neurotoxicity.

The detrimental impacts of plastic nanoparticles (PNPs) are a worldwide concern, although knowledge is still limited, in particular for soil mesofauna. This study investigates the biochemical impact of 44 nm polystyrene PNPs on three soil models-Enchytraeus crypticus (Oligochaeta), Folsomia candida (Collembola) and Porcellionides pruinosus (Isopoda). Exposure durations of 3, 7 and 14 days (d) were implemented at two concentrations (1.5 and 300 mg kg-1 PNPs). Results revealed PNPs impact on the activities of the glutathione-dependent antioxidative enzyme, glutathione S-transferase (GST) and on

Influence of season and site location on European cultured sea bass parasites in Corsican fish farms using indicator species analysis (IndVal).

The parasites of 536 European sea bass, Dicentrarchus labrax, were studied between January 2012 and December 2013 in six Corsican fish farms. The indicator value (IndVal) method, which combines measures of fidelity and specificity, has been used in this study. Because of its resilience to changes in abundance, IndVal is a particularly effective tool for ecological bioindicator. The IndVal method showed how season can influence the occurrence of parasite species in cultured sea bass and also identified parasites as bioindicators relative to fish farm location. The combination of specificity and

Fish mucous cocoons: the 'mosquito nets' of the sea.

Mucus performs numerous protective functions in vertebrates, and in fishes may defend them against harmful organisms, although often the evidence is contradictory. The function of the mucous cocoons that many parrotfishes and wrasses sleep in, while long used as a classical example of antipredator behaviour, remains unresolved. Ectoparasitic gnathiid isopods (Gnathiidae), which feed on the blood of fish, are removed by cleaner fish during the day; however, it is unclear how parrotfish and wrasse avoid gnathiid attacks at night. To test the novel hypothesis that mucous cocoons protect against g

Effects of intra- and interspecific competition on the sensitivity of aquatic macroinvertebrates to carbendazim.

The Ecological Risk Assessment of pesticides and other potentially toxic chemicals is generally based on toxicity data obtained from single-species laboratory experiments. In the field, however, contaminant effects are ubiquitously co-occurring with ecological interactions such as species competition and predation, which might influence the sensitivity of the individuals exposed to toxicants. The present experimental study investigated how intra- and interspecific competition influence the response of sensitive aquatic organisms to a pesticide. For this, the effects of the fungicide carbendazi

Mercury uptake by the estuarine species Palaemonetes pugio and Fundulus heteroclitus compared with their parasites, Probopyrus pandalicola and Eustrongylides sp.

When exposed to methylmercury in the laboratory, grass shrimp, Palaemonetes pugio, parasitized by the isopod Probopyrus pandalicola, accumulated lower concentrations of mercury than their unparasitized counterparts. The parasitic isopod accumulated far less mercury than the grass shrimp. When exposed to mercury in a contaminated field site, mummichogs, Fundulus heteroclitus, parasitized with the nematode Eustrongylides, similarly accumulated lower concentrations of mercury than unparasitized fish, and the parasite similarly accumulated less than the host. The lower uptake by the parasites comp

Uranium toxicity to aquatic invertebrates: A laboratory assay.

Uranium mining is an environmental concern because of runoff and the potential for toxic effects on the biota. To investigate uranium toxicity to freshwater invertebrates, we conducted a 96-h acute toxicity test to determine lethal concentrations (testing concentrations up to 262 mg L-1) for three stream invertebrates: a shredder caddisfly, Schizopelex festiva Rambur (Trichoptera, Sericostomatidae); a detritivorous isopod, Proasellus sp. (Isopoda, Asellidae); and a scraper gastropod, Theodoxus fluviatilis (Gastropoda, Neritidae). Next, we ran a chronic-toxicity test with the most tolerant spec

Genetic commonalities in eye and pigment evolution in the Asellus aquaticus species complex extend to the biogeographically and ecologically most divergent cave population, A. infernus.

The Asellus aquaticus species complex, a freshwater isopod crustacean, includes surface and cave ecomorphs that differ markedly in eye and pigmentation phenotypes. Previous genetic studies in Slovenian cave populations revealed that the same genomic regions underlie eye and pigment loss across multiple cave populations, suggesting strong genetic constraints on these traits. To test the generality of this pattern, we examined Asellus infernus, a cave population from Mangalia, Romania, that inhabits thermal, sulfidic waters and is geographically distant from the Slovenian cave populations. Herpotrichone A Exerts Neuroprotective Effects by Relieving Ferroptosis.

Inhibition of oxidative stress and ferroptosis is currently considered to be a promising therapeutic approach for neurodegenerative diseases. Herpotrichones, a class of compounds derived from insect symbionts, have shown potential for neuroprotective activity with low toxicity. However, the specific mechanisms through which herpotrichones exert their neuroprotective effects remain to be fully elucidated. In this study, the natural [4 + 2] adducts herpotrichone A (He-A) and its new analogues were isolated from the isopod-associated fungus Herpotrichia sp. SF09 and exhibited significantly protec

Parasitic crustaceans as a potential vector of MDR Vibrio alginolyticus infection among farmed marine fish in some earthen-pond based Egyptian aquaculture facilities: Molecular, epidemiological and pathological evidences.

Parasitic crustaceans affecting cultured marine fish in earthen-pond aquaculture facilities are nasty parasites that trigger cascades of microbial infections with consequent economic losses. In the current study, the role of some parasitic crustaceans in spread and transmission of bacterial infections among cultured marine fishes was investigated utilizing taxonomical, molecular, epidemiological, and pathological assays. A total of 400 marine fish involving Pomadasys stridens, Dicentrarchus labra, Sparus aurata, and Tilapia zilli have been randomly collected from some private earthen pond-base
