Seven of 10 fall-fed female Ixodes dammini Spielman, Clifford, Piesman, & Corwin, placed on the ground in Lyme, Conn., within 18-cm-diameter rings in November 1988, survived the winter and laid eggs during the first weeks of May. The female ticks overwintered within the grass mat or in the crevices of the soil under the leaf litter. Two of the females had moved as far as the metal rim (approximately 9 cm) sometime in November or December. Three females moved from their winter sites to other locations within the confines of the ring during March and April. One had moved as far as the metal ring

To identify hosts that may serve as European reservoirs for the agent of Lyme disease, Borrelia burgdorferi, we determined whether nymphal Ixodes ricinus feed mainly on particular mice (Apodemus flavicollis or A. agrarius), voles (Clethrionomys glareolus) or on sand lizards (Lacerta agilis) and whether the abundance of these hosts corresponds to the seasonal activity of the subadult stages of the vector tick. In all sites, the mice appeared most heavily infested by larvae; at least seven parasitized each mouse, about three per vole and four per lizard. Many fewer nymphal I. ricinus parasitized

Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) virus was isolated from a sample of Ixodes hexagonus ticks collected from the hair of the western European hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus) which had been captured on the edge of a new housing estate in Ceské Budĕjovice at the end of September 1986. This was the first isolation of TBE virus from this vector, supporting the previous experimental results. The virus was identified in immunofluorescent and plaquereduction neutralization tests.

The tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV), a zoonotic flaviviral infection, is endemic in large parts of Norway and Eurasia. Humans are mainly infected with TBEV via bites from infected ticks. In Norway, the main geographical distribution of ticks is along the Norwegian coastline from southeast (~59°N) and up to the southern parts of Nordland County (~65°N). In this study, we collected ticks by flagging along the coast from Østfold County to Nordland County. By whole-genome sequencing of the mitochondrial genome of Ixodes ricinus, the phylogenetic tree suggests that there is limited phylogeogra

Three-host Ixodid ticks, obligate blood-feeding Acari Parasitiformes, spend the majority of their lives off of hosts. They rely on morphological, physiological, and behavioral adaptations to address the compromise between water loss and obtaining oxygen sufficient to meet metabolic needs. Here, we characterize the patterns of ventilation of the blacklegged tick, Ixodes scapularis, providing the first measurements for Ixodes, and furthering understanding of the physiology of a medically important vector of tick-borne disease. Measuring CO2 output of I. scapularis nymphs through a flow-through r

Hard ticks of the order Ixodidae serve as vectors for numerous human pathogens, including the causative agent of Lyme Disease Borrelia burgdorferi. Tick-associated microbes can influence pathogen colonization, offering the potential to inhibit disease transmission through engineering of the tick microbiota. Here, we investigate whether B. burgdorferi encounters abundant bacteria within the midgut of wild adult Ixodes scapularis, its primary vector. Through the use of controlled sequencing methods and confocal microscopy, we find that the majority of field-collected adult I. scapularis harbor l

Lyme disease (also called borreliosis) is a prevalent chronic disease transmitted by ticks and caused by Borrelia burgdorferi s. l. spirochete. At least one tick protein, namely TROSPA from I. scapularis, commonly occurring in the USA, was shown to be required for colonization of the vector by bacteria. Located in the tick gut, TROSPA interacts with the spirochete outer surface protein A (OspA) and initiates the tick colonization. Ixodes ricinus is a primary vector involved in B. burgdorferi s. l. transmission in most European countries. In this study, we characterized the capacities of recomb

A 9-year-old Miniature Horse gelding infested with ticks (Ixodes holocyclus) was presented with flaccid motor paralysis causing recumbency. Neurological examination and other diagnostic tests did not identify an alternative aetiology, leading to a presumptive diagnosis of tick paralysis. The gelding was treated with tick antiserum and intensive supportive care. He made a gradual recovery over the 48 h following presentation and was discharged without further complications. This case report describes in detail the clinical signs and successful treatment of a Miniature Horse with flaccid paralys

The definition and molecular typing of Borrelia miyamotoi transmitted by the Ixodes persuccatus ticks was based on the partial sequencing of the 16S rRNA, p66, and glpQ genes. All the B. miyamotoi analyzed sequences of the 16S rRNA, glpQ, and p66 gene fragments from I. persulcatus were identical and had 99.9-100% similarity to corresponding genes of the B. miyamotoi strain FR64b isolated in Japan. The analyzed amino acid sequences revealed that the 66 protein B. miyamotoi in the site corresponding to the surface-exposed domain contained considerable difference from the Borrelia hermsii, the ty

This study aims to provide information on the occurrence of spotted fever rickettsiae in Ixodes ricinus ticks in southern Germany. A total of 2,141 I. ricinus ticks was collected in Bavaria. Pools of 5-10 ticks were studied by a PCR targeting the rickettsial citrate synthase gene gltA. The average prevalence rate was 12% (257 of 2,141). Sequencing data exclusively identified Rickettsia helvetica DNA. Results and other data demonstrate the possible role of R. helvetica in I. ricinus as a source of human infections in southern Germany.

Borrelia burgdorferi outer surface protein OspB is expressed by spirochetes in the Ixodes scapularis gut. ospB is transcribed from a bicistronic operon with ospA, a known spirochete adhesion gene in the tick gut. Here we examine whether OspB also has a specific function in ticks. OspB specifically binds to a protein or protein complex within the tick gut. We also assessed whether selected nonborreliacidal OspB antibodies or F(ab)(2) fragments interfere with B. burgdorferi-tick attachment in vivo. We examined engorged ticks that fed on B. burgdorferi N40-infected scid mice that had been treated

Articular lesions in 157 patients infected with ixodes tick-borne borreliosis (ITB) in a central Russia's region set on, on the average, in 4 months after tick attack; they were associated with systemic signs of an early disseminated infection and set on less seldom in a late period. The most often encountered systemic signs were as follows: secondary erythema (32% of patients), neurological syndrome (13%), cardio-vascular lesions (22%), ocular lesions (13%) and hepatic lesions (8%). The articular syndrome manifested itself through arthralgia (53 patients) and arthritis (104 patients), which s

Ixodes scapularis and other ticks in the Ixodes ricinus complex may transmit multiple pathogens, but research on coinfections has been limited. Coinfections occur with varying frequency in ticks, but single infections are more common than dual infections. The proportion of I. scapularis or I. ricinus ticks coinfected with both Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato and Anaplasma phagocytophila is generally low, ranging from < 1% to 6% in six geographic areas. A higher prevalence of tick coinfection (26%) has been reported in Westchester County, New York. Genetic variants of the human disease-causing

We studied the rate of transmission of Borrelia burgdorferi from ticks (Ixodes ricinus) to man under field conditions in a case control study. At a holiday camp in southern Germany 384 ticks were removed from 272 persons. Information on symptoms possibly related to Borrelia infection were obtained by a questionnaire to be sent back six weeks after the tick bite. Ticks were examined by immunofluorescence microscopy (IFT) for Borrelia and 49 (12.8%) were found positive. Blood was obtained from 41 persons bitten by Borrelia positive and 41 age and sex matched persons bitten by Borrelia negative t

From three endemic locations of erythema chronicum migrans disease in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, we recovered 19 isolates of a spirochete from Ixodes ricinus ticks. The infection rate in adult ticks was 16 percent. The isolated spirochete is immunologically related to the Ixodes dammini spirochete, Borrelia duttoni, and Treponema pallidum. Using indirect immunofluorescence, the sera of 90 patients with erythema chronicum migrans disease showed antibody titers against the isolated spirochete, which correlated with the clinical course. Similarly, antibodies were demonstrated in the sera of

The histology of skin responses to infestations with female Ixodes holocyclus ticks was investigated in naive and previously infested cattle. In the latter hosts, infiltration of the skin site with basophil leucocytes was an early event. Concurrent spongiosis and vesiculation occurred in the epidermis adjacent to the tick mouthparts. This was followed by infiltration of the upper dermis by eosinophils and other leukocytes. Such reactions were evident one hour after attachment of ticks in hosts which had received two prior infestations. Pronounced epidermal vesiculation and bulla formation with

Tick-borne diseases constitute a major group of emerging vector-borne infections and represent a growing public health concern in many European countries. In Europe, the most clinically significant agents transmitted by Ixodes ricinus are tick-borne encephalitis virus (TBEV) and Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, the causative agents of tick-borne encephalitis and Lyme borreliosis, respectively. Ixodes ricinus also serves as a vector for other pathogenic microorganisms, including louping-ill virus (LIV) and Anaplasma phagocytophilum. The distribution range of the taiga tick, Ixodes persulcatus, has increased in the last decade in Northern Europe. We performed samplings at nine locations in Nordland County, east and northeast of Brønnøysund, south of the Arctic Circle in July 2023. Four of 62 ticks collected were identified as I. persulcatus (one female, two males and one nymph), the remaining were identified as Ixodes ricinus (9 females, 2 males and 47 nymphs). This is the first report of I. persulcatus in Norway. Given the importance of I. persulcatus as vector of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato and more pathogenic subtyp
