Immature Ixodes scapularis (Acari: Ixodidae) parasitizing lizards from the southeastern U.S.A.

Preserved museum specimens of 13 lizard and 3 snake species common in the southeastern U.S.A. were examined for immature Ixodes scapularis Say ticks. Five Eumeces and 4 Ophisaurus lizard species yielded an infestation prevalence of 17.8% for species of Eumeces and 29.0% for species of Ophisaurus. Mean intensity of larvae and nymphs was 7.1 and 2.7, respectively, for species of Eumeces, and 6.3 and 1.4, respectively, for species of Ophisaurus. Collection dates of the lizards ranged from January through December, but most were collected from March through October. The maximum number of immatures

Differential distribution of immature Ixodes dammini (Acari: Ixodidae) on rodent hosts.

Ectoparasites such as ixodid ticks that remain attached to hosts for several days while feeding on blood are able to overcome the inflammatory and immune responses of some hosts and not others. The immature stages of the deer tick Ixodes dammini are found more frequently on the white-footed mouse, Peromyscus leucopus, than on other rodents. We propose that P. leucopus is more tolerant to I. dammini than is a less common host, the meadow vole, Microtus pennsylvanicus. To test this hypothesis, the distribution patterns and engorgement indices were determined for larval and nymphal I. dammini col

Bacterial and protozoan agents found in Hyalomma aegyptium (L., 1758) (Ixodida: Ixodidae) collected from Testudo graeca L., 1758 (Reptilia: Testudines) in Corum Province of Turkey.

Hyalomma aegyptium (L., 1758) (Ixodida: Ixodidae) is a hard tick and the main host for adults are Palearctic tortoises of the genus Testudo, while larvae and nymphs are less host-specific and nymphs also attach to humans. In the present study, a total of 261 H. aegyptium ticks were removed from 26 Testudo graeca L., 1758 in Corum Province of Turkey. The most prevalent pathogens identified molecularly in the ticks were Hemolivia mauritanica (51.9 %), followed by Rickettsia aeschlimannii (32.6 %), Ehrlichia spp. (30.2 %), and Bartonella bovis (0.8 %). All samples were negative for Coxiella burne

Established populations of Ixodes silvanus (Acari: Ixodidae) in the Chaco Serrano, Argentina.

The aim of the study was to report the occurrence of Ixodes silvanus outside its distribution range, in the Chaco Serrano vegetation unit of the Chaco Phytogeographic Province, central Argentina. Ticks were collected from vegetation and on birds between November 2021 and December 2023. A possible seasonal activity was observed in the immature stages of I. silvanus, with larvae in autumn-winter and nymphs in spring-summer, consistent with a behavioral diapause. A total of 937 ticks were identified as I. silvanus and confirmed molecularly, 741 host-seeking and 196 parasitizing 49 passerine birds

An established population of Asian longhorned ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) in Ohio, USA.

We describe the first known established Asian longhorned tick (ALT) (Acari: Ixodidae: Haemaphysalis longicornis Neumann) population in Ohio, USA. In mid-summer 2021, we collected ALTs from an infested pasture in response to an alert that grazing cattle had been infested with ticks, and 3 of them had died. No ALTs were reported following pesticide treatment of the pasture in fall 2021. In the laboratory, we identified 9,287 ticks to species, representing all 3 life stages, as ALTs and tested 100 of the adult females for infectious agents relevant to human and animal health, including Theileria

Diversity, ecology, and seasonality of hard ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) in eastern Croatia.

The diversity of hard tick fauna was studied in different forest communities in 48 localities of eastern Croatia using the dragging-flagging method and by hand from ten different vertebrate hosts. A total of 2,225 specimens comprising seven species in three genera were identified. Ixodes ricinus, the most abundant species (72.8% of all collected specimens) was recorded in 44 localities, followed by Dermacentor reticulatus in 19 localities, while the other five species (D. marginatus, H. concinna, H. inermis, I. canisuga, and I. hexagonus) were recorded in fewer localities. The highest ratio (6

Ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) infesting dogs in Nigeria: epidemiological and public health implications.

Ticks are haematophagous arthropods that exert direct and indirect effects on their hosts. Their global importance as reservoirs and vectors of diseases of veterinary and public health importance is well recognized. However, the level of understanding of their role in disease epidemiology varies from one country to the other based on available data. Information on ticks infesting dogs across Nigeria and the public health significance is scarce. Therefore, this study aimed to provide information on ixodid ticks infesting dogs in Nigeria. Ticks were collected from 608 owned dogs presented to vet

Rhipicephalus microplus (Acarina, Ixodidae) in Angola: evidence of its establishment and expansion.

Livestock constitutes a fundamental asset for the livelihood of rural communities in Angola. Rhipicephalus microplus (Acarina, Ixodidae) is considered to be the most important external parasite impacting the cattle industry in the world. The present work used a cross-sectional study on tick species infesting cattle in smallholder and commercial farms, to investigate the presence of R. microplus in Angola. This species was found to be recently established in certain areas of Cuanza-Sul and Benguela provinces. Furthermore, taking the current understanding of the pattern of dispersal of R. microp

First documentation of ivermectin resistance in Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato (Acari: Ixodidae).

UNLABELLED: The brown dog tick, Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato (Latreille, 1806), is an ectoparasite and disease vector of significant veterinary and public health importance that is distributed widely around the world. The intensive use of synthetic acaricides for tick control exerts a strong selective pressure for brown dog ticks to become resistant to them. Here, we investigated claims from the field regarding treatment failure associated with the use of veterinary products containing ivermectin (IVM) to control brown dog ticks infesting dogs in Yucatan state, Mexico. Dogs in six state

Dermacentor everestianus Hirst, 1926 (Acari: Ixodidae): phylogenetic status inferred from molecular characteristics.

Dermacentor everestianus Hirst, 1926, is only reported in Northwestern China and Nepal. Few researches about this species have been involved, especially for molecular characteristics. The taxonomy studies of D.everestianus are mainly based on morphological features, and its taxonomic status is an ongoing controversy. To clarify the molecular characteristics and phylogenetic status of D.everestianus and other related species, the sequences of mitochondrial 16S ribosomal DNA (rDNA) and cox1 fragments were analyzed in the present study. Analysis of 16S rDNA and cox1 sequences showed 99.3-100% ide

Flagging versus dragging as sampling methods for nymphal Ixodes scapularis (Acari: Ixodidae).

The nymphal stage of the blacklegged tick, Ixodes scapularis (Acari: Ixodidae), is responsible for most transmission of Borrelia burgdorferi, the etiologic agent of Lyme disease, to humans in North America. From 2010 to fall of 2012, we compared two commonly used techniques, flagging and dragging, as sampling methods for nymphal I. scapularis at three sites, each with multiple sampling arrays (grids), in the eastern and central United States. Flagging and dragging collected comparable numbers of nymphs, with no consistent differences between methods. Dragging collected more nymphs than flaggin

Repellent efficacy of DEET and KBR 3023 against Amblyomma hebraeum (Acari: Ixodidae).

The bont tick, Amblyomma hebraeum Koch, is the principal vector of Rickettsia africae, the agent of African tick bite fever, in southern Africa. In contrast to most other hard ticks, members of the genus Amblyomma exhibit a characteristic attack host-seeking behavior. The efficacy of topically applied 20% lotions of DEET (diethyl-3-methylbenzamide), the currently considered reference repellent substance, and KBR 3023, a recently developed piperidine compound, was evaluated against laboratory-reared A. hebraeum nymphs on treated fingers. Both substances repelled >85% of nymph attacks at 0 and 1

[Dichotomous identification keys of ticks (Acari: Ixodidae), livestock parasites in North Africa].

The known fauna of livestock in the Maghreb consists of 5 established species. Five other species recorded seem to be introduced by imported animals. In this paper, dichotomous keys are given for species and subspecies of the genus Hyalomma. Rhipicephalus and Haemaphysalis parasite of livestock in North Africa. For the ticks of the other genera which are represented by only one species, we provide an identification description. Notes on geographical distribution, host and period of activity are provided.

Hyalomma truncatum (Acari; Ixodidae): investigations into the scototaxis of unfed adult ticks.

Under controlled test conditions, unfed male and female Hyalomma truncatum ticks exhibited a positive scototaxis to stationary, two-dimensional targets. Upright-positioned rectangles were the most attractive targets. The attractiveness of these targets increased with their size. Significantly more ticks responded scototactically positively to the targets under a luminance contrast ratio of 5:1, as compared with other luminance contrast ratios. Targets with an elevation angle of 13 degrees were occupied more frequently than objects with higher elevation angles. Scototaxis was the same towards a

The house mouse (laboratory strain), Mus musculus (L.), the cotton mouse, Peromyscus gossypinus (LeConte), the broad-headed skink, Eumeces laticeps (Schneider), and the guinea pig, Cavia porcellus (L.), were successively infested five times with larvae of the blacklegged tick, Ixodes scapularis Say. Tick feeding success, engorgement weight, and subsequent molting success were measured after each infestation. A greater percentage of ticks (P less than 0.05) fed on M. musculus and E. laticeps than on P. gossypinus or C. porcellus. P. gossypinus expressed a transitory partial resistance, measured

[Sexual transmission of the tick-borne encephalitis virus in ixodid ticks (Ixodidae)].

Sexual transmission of tick-borne encephalitis virus from infected ixodid males to noninfected females is shown: in Ixodes persulcatus in 50% (6 of 12) and in Hyalomma anatolicum in 6.2% (1 of 16). The sexual transmission of tick-borne encephalitis virus is shown to provide a transmissible transfer of the virus into eggs in ixodid ticks. Electron microscope studies of the sexual system of ixodid males infected with the virus have revealed numerous morphologically mature virus particles in lumens of endoplasmic reticulum, in vacuoles of Golgi complex of spermatocytes and in association with tub

Updated list of tick species (Parasitiformes: Ixodida) in Tamaulipas: distribution and hosts.

The lists of tick species in Tamaulipas are inconsistent because previous studies have focused on only a few tick genera, or general works where ticks are included among other groups of mites or arthropods. For this reason, the objective of this study was to collect previous records and add new ones to generate an updated list of ticks in the state of Tamaulipas and to know their richness, hosts and geographic distribution. For this, a search for published works was carried out through bibliographic searches in databases and academic profiles with different combinations of words used in Spanis
