The promise of telemedicine to expand access to buprenorphine for opioid use disorder (OUD) within carceral settings is substantial, offering a lifeline to a population disproportionately affected by the opioid crisis. Our experience launching and managing a telemedicine-based buprenorphine treatment program in Maryland jails, however, has been a stark reminder of an adage in correctional health: "If you've worked in one jail, you've only worked in one jail." Each correctional facility presents a unique constellation of operational, cultural, and logistical challenges that shape the implementa

BACKGROUND: Opioid use disorder (OUD) remains a significant health care need for women, particularly those involved in the criminal legal system (CLS). There are no studies to date that focus on the utilization of telehealth as a platform for assessment and linkage to medications to treat opioid use disorder (MOUD) at community re-entry for women, despite the fact that women have unique risk factors that may contribute to opioid relapse in the community. The purpose of this mixed-methods study is to provide an overview of the innovative use of telehealth for linking incarcerated women to commu

Incarceration history can affect sexual health behaviors. A randomized controlled trial of a prevention intervention tailored for post-incarcerated men was administered in a reentry setting. Men ≤45 days post release were recruited into a five-session intervention study. Participants ( N = 255) were assessed and tested for three sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and HIV at baseline and 3 months post-intervention and followed up for 3 more months. The intervention group's STD risks knowledge ( p < .001), partner communication about condoms ( p < .001), and condom application skills ( p < .00

Universal screening for the sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) of chlamydia and gonorrhea on intake in jails has been proposed as the most effective strategy to decrease morbidity in inmates and to reduce transmission risk in communities after release. Most inmates come from a population that is at elevated risk for STDs and has limited access to health care. However, limited resources and competing priorities force decision makers to consider the cost of screening programs in comparison to other needs. The costs and cost-effectiveness of universal screening in correctional settings have not

Persons with symptoms of acute mental illnesses present problems for jail management. Jails have a constitutional duty to provide psychiatric services to all persons in need of such care. However, mental health resources are frequently insufficient to meet the many needs of persons with mental illnesses in jails, and are often inaccessible to those released to the community. This study focuses on the experiences of a cohort of detainees (n = 379) with mental illnesses who have been incarcerated in seven U.S. jails. Data gathered include criminal and demographic characteristics, mental health s

BACKGROUND: There is little information regarding the hepatitis B virus (HBV), vaccination status, and hepatitis B exposure in Italian women's jails. We aimed to describe the HBV exposure and HBs antibody (anti-HBs) protection levels in female prisoners.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective multicentric study was performed in Italian prisons from 2021 to 2023. Univariate and multivariate analyses were conducted to identify risk factors for HBc antibody (anti-HBc) seropositivity and non-protective anti-HBs titer.
RESULTS: We included 156 patients. The median age was 41.0 (IQR 34.0-48.0). Of

Not surprisingly, incarceration's extreme separation and stress have significant negative effects on romantic relationships. Unfortunately, few programs have been developed to improve jailed individuals' romantic relationship with their non-incarcerated partner. The present study investigated the effectiveness of the individual version of the digital OurRelationship program for incarcerated individuals. The current study is a program evaluation of services provided by PayTel Inc. (a provider of eLearning and communication devices in US jails) between June 2020 and November 2021. Of the 5411 in

AbstractPrior to the COVID-19 pandemic, the United States housed 2.3 million inmates in 7,147 incarceration structures that, because of age, overcrowding, and poor ventilation, exacerbated the spread of airborne infections. The flow of individuals into and out of correctional facilities compounded the challenges in keeping them COVID-free. This article focuses on the work of the health and administrative leadership, in partnership with judicial and police personnel, to prevent COVID-19 inside the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail and to mitigate its spread when the jail population and/or

The number of families affected by parental incarceration in the United States has increased dramatically in the past three decades, with primarily negative implications for adult mental health and child and family well-being. Despite research documenting increased strain on coparenting relationships, less is known regarding the relation between adult mental health and coparenting quality. This study investigated coparenting in families with young children currently experiencing parental incarceration. In a diverse sample of 86 jailed parent-caregiver dyads (n = 172), this analysis of a short-

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The purpose of this article is to review the unique benefits and challenges of implementing telepsychiatry in correctional facilities.
RECENT FINDINGS: Telepsychiatry has been shown to be an effective mode of patient care delivery in jails and prisons. Psychiatry staffing shortages nationwide are impacting the ability of correctional facilities to provide sufficient psychiatric care to inmates. However, telepsychiatry has helped alleviate the staffing shortages. Correctional facilities are obligated to provide adequate psychiatry services to inmates in need of them. Unfortu

Over 200,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer each year, and incarcerated women face unique risks associated with poor access to healthcare. Regular mammography can diagnose breast cancer early, giving the patient the best chance of survival. The objective of this study was to determine the proportion of jail incarcerated women who have received a mammogram and were up-to-date based on the most recent United States Preventive Services Task Force recommendations. This was a secondary analysis of data collected among jailed women who participated in a cervical cancer literacy program. Rate

BACKGROUND: There are many studies of bunk bed injuries, but none specifically addressing those occurring in jails. It was the purpose of this study to investigate the magnitude and patterns of bunk bed injuries occurring in correctional institutions.
METHODS: The National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS) data for the 10 year period 2006 through 2015 due to bunk beds was accessed. Injuries involving bunk beds were identified and the mechanism of injury determined. Statistical analyses were performed with SUDAAN 10™ software. A p < 0.05 was considered statistically significant.

Previous studies provide insight into the mental health of jail and prison inmates, but this research does not compare the two groups of inmates. Using data from the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study, this article examines how the association between incarceration and self-reported mental health varies by facility type, net of an array of demographic and socioeconomic characteristics. Both jail and prison inmates report high rates of depression, life dissatisfaction, heavy drinking, and illicit drug use. In adjusted logistic regression models, those incarcerated in jails, compared wit

Suicide in jails, like all death in custody, may involve complicated investigation. Allegations of mistreatment and/or abuse may be raised and these possibilities need to be addressed. Apart from these investigative concerns, the occurrence of suicides in such a controlled environment raises additional questions about potential preventative measures. Between 2004 and 2014, there were ten deaths of incarcerated individuals in Cuyahoga County (metropolitan Cleveland) Ohio. Most (80%) were white and all were male. Similar to previous reviews, the majority of decedents hanged themselves (90%), wit

OBJECTIVE: This study assessed the effectiveness of a postbooking jail diversion program for a homeless population with mental illness in South Florida, as measured by rate of arrests after admission to the program. The program (termed relationship-based care) is structured to ensure access to psychiatric and primary health care, delivered within a theoretical framework developed for working with this population.
METHODS: Data were reviewed from the Criminal Justice Information System in Miami-Dade County for 229 adults who were arrested and found to be appropriate for jail diversion. Data fo

Because there is no standard reporting of injuries in jails and prisons, the national burden of head trauma during incarceration is unclear. We report on a case of repeated head trauma in the New York City (NYC) jail system, data on the incidence of head trauma and mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), and compare those findings with national estimates. The case report revealed 64 injurious events over two years, 44% resulting in a head injury and 25% resulting in emergency hospitalization. During the 42 months of this analysis, 10,286 incidents of head trauma occurred in the NYC jail system. Mi

Women in jail experience high rates of many health and social problems. This study examined the effects of preexisting social and health characteristics and the type of services received on retention in community aftercare for 193 drug-using women released from the New York City jail to two low-income communities. Rearrest rates for program participants were compared to a group of women not eligible for services because of their residence outside the target communities. Women who enrolled in residential programs with on-site drug treatment and other social services after release were compared

A survey by the Department of Justice in 1978 of inmates of local jails in the United States found that 68% had ever used drugs like heroin, cocaine, marijuana, amphetamines, or barbiturates outside a treatment program, and without a doctor's prescription. Offenses for which relatively larger proportions of inmates reported drug use included robbery, burglary, auto theft, larceny, and drug offenses. During the month prior to jail, 44% of inmates reported using drugs. Some 21% of convicted inmates reported being under the influence of drugs at the time of an offense for which convicted. One-fou
