Characteristics of HRT users in Japan: Evidence from the Japan Nurses' Health Study.

OBJECTIVES: Little is known about what type of women use hormone replacement therapy (HRT) in Japan. Based on the Japan Nurses' Health Study (JNHS), a large population cohort study, we determined the characteristics of HRT users by comparing the characteristics of new HRT users and the characteristics of women who did not use HRT during a 10-year follow-up period. STUDY DESIGN: Of the 15,019 JNHS participants, 4886 women reported an experience of menopausal transition during the 10-year follow-up period. MAIN OUTCOME MEASUREMENT: Characteristics of new HRT users. RESULTS: The proportion of

The management of hyperthyroidism due to Graves' disease in Japan in 1988. The Japan Thyroid Association.

The management of hyperthyroidism due to Graves' disease in Japan was the subject of a survey of the members of the Japan Thyroid Association (JTA), and the results were compared to those of the European Thyroid Association (ETA). In the questionnaire, in vivo and in vitro diagnostic procedures, the choice of treatment and the details of the treatment for a patient with typical, moderate and uncomplicated hyperthyroidism due to Graves' disease was at first asked, and eight variations with a single alternative were proposed to evaluate how each alternative would affect the choice of treatment.

Clinical evaluation of delapril in Japan. Report from the Japan Study Group on Delapril.

Delapril, a new angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor discovered in the laboratory of Takeda Chemical Industries, Ltd., is the result of drug design based on the structure-activity relationships of ACE inhibitors. Delapril is an antihypertensive agent with a relatively long duration of action and no SH moiety in its structure. Following administration, it is converted into two active metabolites. Delapril effectively lowered blood pressure in 73% of 1,008 patients with hypertension during clinical trials in Japan. Efficacy rates were 73% for essential hypertension, 85% for renal hypert

Trichophyton tonsurans Infection in Japan.

The first cases of Trichophyton tonsurans infection outbreaks were reported in Japan beginning around the turn of the 21th century. Initial reports were of group infections among high school and college combat sports athletes. Gradually, the spread of infection to younger age groups, such as junior high school students, was confirmed. Today, T. tonsurans is considered one of the major causative organisms of tinea corporis and tinea capitis in Japan. The most common clinical manifestations of T. tonsurans infection are tinea corporis and tinea capitis. Tinea corporis can be difficult to disting

Poststreptococcal reactive arthritis in Japan.

Reactive arthritis after Group A streptococcal infection (poststreptococcal reactive arthritis: PSRA) that does not meet the Jones criteria for acute rheumatic fever (ARF) has been reported as a new entity for over a decade. In Japan there are few reports of PSRA. We encountered four children with arthritis accompanied with Group A streptococcal infection in our department. We investigated our cases and the recent Japanese literature. Japanese cases of PSRA are frequently accompanied with uveitis and erythema nodosum, and tonsillectomy resolved their symptoms in some cases. There were overlap

Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Risk in Japan.

Increased global mortality is associated with atherosclerosis, which appears to be independent of race. Cardiovascular disease is one of the leading causes of mortality and morbidity in Japan. Atherosclerosis, an inflammatory disease characterized by abnormal lipid accumulation and inflammation in the arterial wall, is the main underlying cause of cardiovascular disease. Numerous cardiovascular risk scores have been developed and are used to prioritize patients' treatment needs. The predictive performance of risk scores established in Western nations needs to be examined in Japanese population

Nationwide rubella epidemic--Japan, 2013.

Rubella usually is a mild, febrile rash illness in children and adults; however, infection early in pregnancy, particularly during the first 16 weeks, can result in miscarriage, stillbirth, or an infant born with birth defects (i.e., congenital rubella syndrome [CRS]). As of 2013, goals to eliminate rubella have been established in two World Health Organization regions (the Region of the Americas by 2010 and the European Region by 2015), and targets for accelerated rubella control and CRS prevention have been established by the Western Pacific Region (WPR). In 1976, Japan introduced single-ant

[Pediatric neurotransmitter disease in Japan].

Pediatric neurotransmitter disease (PND) encompasses a range of rare genetic disorders that affect the metabolism of neurotransmitters in children. While these neurological disorders are often studied independently of each other, they all manifest central nervous system symptoms and require proper diagnosis and intervention at early stages. Since clinical symptoms of PND can be nonspecific, the conditions are often under-diagnosed, leaving patients without a chance to receive effective treatment. Envisioning PND as a whole, a comprehensive research effort is underway for a better understanding

[Hereditary spastic paraplegia in Japan].

The Japan Spastic Paraplegia Research Consortium (JASPAC) is conducting a nationwide clinical and genetic survey of patients with HSP in Japan. To date (July 20, 2011), 375 index patients with HSP from 42 prefectures in Japan have been registered. In 148 Japanese ADHSP families, SPG4 was the most common form, accounting for 47%, followed by SPG31 (4%), SPG3A (3%), SPG8 (1%), and SPG10 (1%). Meanwhile, preliminary data showed that SPG11 and ARSACS were common in Japanese ARHSP families. Since the genes in approximately 40% of ADHSP and 80% of ARHSP cases remain unknown, we aim to identify the n

Eosinophilic chronic rhinosinusitis in Japan.

Chronic rhinosinusitis is a heterogeneous disease. In Europe and the United States, it has recently been divided into two subgroups: chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) and chronic rhinosinusitis without nasal polyps (CRSsNP). The majority of CRSwNP cases have a strong tendency to recur after surgery and show eosinophil-dominant inflammation. However, this definition has proved difficult to apply in Japan and East Asia, because more than half of the CRSwNP cases do not exhibit eosinophil-dominant inflammation in these areas of the world. In Japan in the 1990s, refractory CRSwNP t

[Tuberculosis prevalence survey in Japan].

Chest X-ray examination had been used rather soon after the discovery of X-ray by Rontgen K in 1895 as it was possible to detect chest abnormality by simple radiography. After the discovery of radiophotography independently by Abreu M and Koga Y in 1936, it was applied as a method of mass screening for TB in Japan, and Imamura A made a special lecture on "The mass screening for TB" using radiophotography in 1940 in the Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society for TB. From experiences of mass screening, it was found that there were many cases of TB who do not aware of their own disease, and to kn

Osteo-odonto-keratoprosthesis in Japan.

Osteo-odonto-keratoprosthesis (OOKP) is a keratoprosthesis technique in which the patient's own tooth root is used to support an optical cylinder. It was invented by Strampelli in 1963 and modified and established by Falcinelli about 10 years later. This method is particularly useful for restoring sight in end-stage Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) and ocular cicatricial pemphigoid (OCP). We started performing OOKP surgery in June 2003 supported by Dr Christopher Liu of Sussex Eye Hospital, Brighton, UK. Till now, we have performed 4 OOKP surgeries for end-stage SJS and OCP.
