Does the Method of Open Reduction and Internal Fixation of Mandibular Angle Fracture Differentially Affect Postoperative Strength of Jaw Muscles as Assessed by Surface Electromyography? An Analytical Study.

OBJECTIVE: Individuals with Fanconi anemia (FA) are predisposed to develop ovarian cancer than those without FA, this is largely contributed to promoter methylation of the FANCF gene and subsequent disruption of the FA-BRCA pathway. In an attempt to understand more molecular genetic bases of ovarian cancer, we examined the expression of the FANCF and the status of the promoter methylation of the FANCF gene in ovarian cancer. METHODS: Seven ovarian cancer cell lines and eighteen ovarian cancer specimens were selected for this study. Both genomic DNA and total RNA were extracted from fresh tiss

Is Dose Reduction After Initial Treatment With Denosumab Associated With Subsequent Skeletal-related Events, Osteonecrosis of the Jaw, or Osteoporotic Fractures in Patients With Metastatic Carcinoma? A Nationwide Retrospective Comparative Study.

BACKGROUND: Denosumab is widely used for preventing skeletal-related events (SREs) in patients with bone metastases. As advances in systemic cancer therapies have improved survival, the long-term safety and efficacy of denosumab warrant reevaluation. Balancing efficacy in preventing SREs with the cumulative risks associated with prolonged denosumab therapy, particularly osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ), a rebound phenomenon of accelerated bone turnover after abrupt discontinuation, and subsequent fragility fractures, has become increasingly important. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: (1) Is a lower cumulati

Biodegradation of titanium implants after long-time insertion used for the treatment of fractured upper and lower jaws through osteosynthesis: element analysis by electron microscopy and EDX or EELS.

Twelve patients underwent an osteosynthesis with titanium to treat upper and lower jaw fractures. Six to 12 months later, the miniplates were removed. Tissue samples were analyzed by light and electron microscopy for detection of a metallosis. The analysis showed new bone formation like callus tissue around the miniplates. In some cases small, rounded deposits and accumulation of colloid-like particles located next to bigger titanium artifacts were detected in the cytoplasm of histiocytes and in the matrix of connective tissue. The titanium was identified by elemental analysis using EDX in SEM

Identifying incident medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw and antiresorptive drug holidays using natural language processing on clinical notes in men and women prescribed bisphosphonates or denosumab for fracture prevention.

OBJECTIVE: Medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) is a rare complication of antiresorptive therapy for osteoporosis, with risk potentially influenced by "drug holidays" around dentoalveolar procedures. MRONJ risk is higher in rheumatic diseases. Epidemiologic studies are limited by poor administrative code performance for MRONJ identification and lack of structured pharmacy data capturing drug holidays. We developed and validated a natural language processing (NLP) algorithm to classify MRONJ and detect drug holidays from free-text clinical notes in electronic health records (EHR)

Validity of International Classification of Diseases (ICD)-9 and ICD-10 Codes for Medication-Related Osteonecrosis of the Jaw (MRONJ) Among Individuals Prescribed Antiresorptives for Fracture Prevention Across Two Cohorts.

INTRODUCTION: Prior studies evaluating International Classification of Diseases (ICD) codes for identifying medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) have reported poor validity but were largely limited to postmenopausal women, small samples, or patients receiving bisphosphonate or denosumab for cancer-related complications rather than fracture prevention. PURPOSE: To evaluate the performance of ICD-9 and ICD-10 codes for identifying MRONJ among adults treated with bisphosphonates or denosumab for fracture prevention. METHODS: We included two retrospective U.S. cohorts of adults ag

A Retrospective Evaluation of Mandibular Fracture in Kabul, Afghanistan.

BACKGROUND: The mandible, a key bone in the lower face, is prone to trauma. Although mandibular fractures are widely recognized as common and costly, there is a research gap on this topic in Afghanistan. This study explores the causes of lower jaw fractures and their link to demographic factors in the Afghan population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 535 medical records from a Kabul tertiary hospital (March 2021 to March 2022) examined lower jaw fractures, patient demographics (age, sex), and injury causes. Statistical methods, including chi-square tests and Pearson's cont

The treatment of malocclusion after open reduction of maxillofacial fracture: a report of three cases.

The posttraumatic complications of jaw fractures related to jaw function and facial deformity include nonunion, malunion, malocclusion, temporomandibular joint dysfunction and facial asymmetry. This report presents cases referred to our department for revision of malunion and malocclusion following inadequate reduction of jaw fractures. Three patients with posttraumatic malocclusions caused by malunion were treated with a LeFort I osteotomy in one case and re-fracture in two cases. All of the patients exhibited stable results without further complications (e.g., malunion or malocclusion). Accu

Jaw injuries of independence victims from the 1991 War in Croatia.

In the aetiology of maxillofacial injuries, car accidents, violence, sports injuries and lately war injuries are frequently mentioned. The purpose of this study was to exhibit and analyse types of jaw injuries on bodies exhumed from massive and individual graves located in regions temporarily occupied during the War in Croatia that lasted from 1991 to 1995. The sample was the post-mortal documentation of the orofacial region (set of teeth, photographs, radiographic images) of 1068 victims exhumed from massive grave sites in Croatia. The jaw traumatism was analysed on the whole sample as well a

Fractures of the mandible and maxilla: A 10-year analysis.

BACKGROUND: Previous analysis of jaw fracture hospitalisations in Western Australia (WA) indicated disproportionately high rates of hospitalisations for Aboriginal people. This study was to follow-up on the earlier analysis to determine if inequalities in terms of jaw fracture hospitalisation rates between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people have changed. AIMS: This study, done over a 10-year period from 1999/2000 to 2008/2009, aimed to determine rates of hospitalisations for jaw fractures in WA, trends over the 10-year period, and direct costs associated with these hospital admissions. Mandibular fractures that have healed are not weakened permanently: series of nine patients who sustained mandibular fractures at different sites on two separate occasions.

Some patients are concerned that after satisfactory healing of a mandibular fracture the jaw will be weaker than it was before the injury, and will break readily at the same site after relatively minor injury. We aimed to find out if these concerns have any basis, and report the pattern of fracture in a series of nine patients who had sustained fractures of the jaw on two separate occasions. All fractures were at different sites from the original ones, and in only one case was the fracture adjacent to plates that had been placed previously. Once a mandibular fracture has healed, the bone at th

Conservative treatment of pathological fracture after multiple odontogenic keratocyst surgery: a case report and literature analysis.

Pathological fractures after jaw cyst surgery are rare clinically but are a serious complication. Once a pathological fracture occurs, treatment time and economic costs increase, and doctors face difficulty in handling it. This article reports a case of a patient with mandibular pathological fractures after multiple odontogenic keratocyst surgery of the jaw. Mandibular lesions were located in the bilateral mandibular angles and had macrocystic changes. We adopted a conservative treatment plan, and the treatment effect was good. We also discussed and analyzed relevant literature to provide a re

Maxillomandibular external skeletal fixation in five cats with caudal jaw trauma.

Five cats with caudal jaw injuries including mandibular ramus fractures, temporomandibular luxation/subluxation and temporal bone fractures were managed with external skeletal fixation to provide open-mouth maxillomandibular fixation. Three of five cats were able to eat orally during the period of fixation, whereas two cats with jaws fixed in a suboptimal position were dependent on oesophagostomy tube nutrition. Fixation was well tolerated and was maintained for 21 to 42 days. All cats were eating normally and had good jaw function at follow-up (mean 39 months, range 7 to 71 months).

Unilateral mandibular condylar fractures: a 31-year follow-up of non-surgical treatment.

At the University Hospital of Malmö, Sweden, standardized trauma charts were used for registration of all jaw fractures from 1972 to 1976. During the year 2005 the aim was to interview all patients treated non-surgically for unilateral mandibular condylar fractures during this period. In total, 49 patients with unilateral condylar fractures were treated non-surgically in 1972-1976. Of these, 23 patients were available for follow-up, 17 were dead, 7 were not found and 2 did not answer letters or phone calls. The follow-up was a telephone interview according to a standardized questionnaire conce
