Number of sampling movements and manual stiffness judgments.

OBJECTIVE: It has been suggested that when using posteroanterior pressure to assess the stiffness of the spine, no more than two or three oscillations should be used. This study sought to examine this clinical impression by investigating the effect of the number of sampling movements on stiffness perception. DESIGN: Perceptual study using a mechanical device to provide stiffness stimuli, with university staff and students as judges. SETTING: University psychophysics laboratory. INTERVENTIONS: In part 1, subjects were directed to sample the stimuli a prescribed number of times (either 1, 2,

Influence of artificial intelligence on ophthalmologists' judgments in glaucoma.

PURPOSE: To examine the influence of artificial intelligence (AI) on physicians' judgments regarding the presence and severity of glaucoma on fundus photographs in an online simulation system. METHODS: Forty-five trainee and expert ophthalmologists independently evaluated 120 fundus photographs, including 30 photographs each from patients with no glaucoma, mild glaucoma, moderate glaucoma, and severe glaucoma. A second trial was conducted at least one week after the initial trial in which photograph presentation order was randomized. During the second trial, 30% of the glaucoma judgments made

The Impact of Social Stress on Trustworthiness Judgments in Schizophrenia.

The present study examines the impact of induced social stress on facial trustworthiness judgments in individuals with schizophrenia (SCZ) and the associations between symptoms and trustworthiness ratings. Thirty-three individuals with SCZ and forty healthy controls (HC) were asked to rate the trustworthiness of 24 digitally morphed faces in two counterbalanced conditions. Mild social stress was induced by listening to loud noises from a busy street. BPRS, CAPE-42, and the Paranoia Scale measured the severity of symptoms. We did not observe significant differences in trustworthiness judgments

Trustworthiness judgments and pupil-size in individuals with schizophrenia.

Individuals with schizophrenia show aberrant processing of social cues. In the current study, we (1) compared trustworthiness ratings of faces between patients with schizophrenia and healthy controls, (2) compared pupillary reactivity between patients and controls (3) examined whether trustworthiness judgments in schizophrenia are related to pupil reactivity, (4) and examined associations between trustworthiness judgements and symptom severity, specifically paranoia. Patients with schizophrenia spectrum disorders (N = 48) and healthy controls (N = 33) completed a Trustworthiness Task, during w

Invariance Violations and the CNI Model of Moral Judgments.

A number of papers have applied the CNI model of moral judgments to investigate deontological and consequentialist response tendencies. A controversy has emerged concerning the methodological assumptions of the CNI model. In this article, we contribute to this debate by extending the CNI paradigm with a skip option. This allows us to test an invariance assumption that the CNI model shares with prominent process-dissociation models in cognitive and social psychology. Like for these models, the present experiments found violations of the invariance assumption for the CNI model. In Experiment 2,

Perceptual learning of orientation judgments in oblique meridians.

Fourteen daily training sessions in orientation discrimination of foveal lines in the 45-deg meridian improved thresholds in the trained meridian by an average of 25 % in five observers. A substantial amount of training transferred to the other obliques, but none to the cardinal meridians, with a consequent reduction in the oblique effect. The data were interpreted as showing perceptual learning at two levels: performance facilitation specific to the trained orientation and improved proficiency globally. The failure of the cardinal orientations to share in the benefit is likely to have its ori

The influence of symmetry on children's judgments of facial attractiveness.

In experiment 1, we examined developmental changes in the influence of symmetry on judgments of attractiveness by showing adults and children pairs of individual faces in which one face was transformed 75% toward perfect symmetry, while the other face was transformed by exaggerating its asymmetries by 75%. Adults and 9-year-olds, but not 5-year-olds, rated the more symmetric faces as more attractive than the less symmetric faces, although the effect was stronger in adults than 9-year-olds. The preference for symmetry was stronger for male than female faces, and stronger for adults' than childr

The effect of listener experience and anchors on judgments of dysphonia.

PURPOSE: To determine the effect of auditory anchors on judgments of overall severity (OS) and vocal effort (VE) in dysphonic speech when judgments are made by experienced and inexperienced listeners, and when self-rated by individuals with dysphonia (speaker-listeners). METHOD: Twenty individuals with dysphonia and 4 normal controls provided speech recordings. Speaker-listeners judged their own speech samples for OS and VE without auditory anchors, and then in the presence of anchors, using 100-mm visual analog scales (VAS). Twenty inexperienced and 10 experienced listeners evaluated the sam

Judgments of the fairness of using performance enhancing drugs.

Undergraduates (total N=185) were asked about performance-affecting drugs. Some drugs supposedly affected athletic performance, others memory, and other attention. Some improved performance for anyone who took them, others for the top 10% of performers, others for the bottom 10%, and finally, yet other drugs worked only on the bottom 10% who also showed physical abnormalities. Participants were asked about the fairness of allowing the drug to be used, about banning it, and about whether predictions of future performance based on testing with or without the drug were better. The study found tha

Judgments of exocentric direction in large-scale space.

Judgments of exocentric direction are quite common, especially when judging where others are looking or pointing. To investigate these judgments in large-scale space, observers were shown two targets in a large open field and were asked to judge the exocentric direction specified by the targets. The targets ranged in egocentric distance from 5 to 20 m with target-to-target angular separations of 45 degrees, 90 degrees, and 135 degrees. Observers judged exocentric direction using two methods: (i) by judging which point on a distant fence appeared collinear with the two targets, and (ii) by orie

Human heading judgments in the presence of moving objects.

When moving toward a stationary scene, people judge their heading quite well from visual information alone. Much experimental and modeling work has been presented to analyze how people judge their heading for stationary scenes. However, in everyday life, we often move through scenes that contain moving objects. Most models have difficulty computing heading when moving objects are in the scene, and few studies have examined how well humans perform in the presence of moving objects. In this study, we tested how well people judge their heading in the presence of moving objects. We found that peop

Paired comparison judgments of relative intelligibility in noise.

Normal hearing and hearing impaired subjects listened alternately to continuous discourse processed by pairs of binaural hearing aids. In each case, they were asked to judge which pair of aids reproduced speech more intelligibly. Twenty-three pairs of aids competed in three elimination tournaments and one round-robin tournament. Speech discrimination tests obtained via each aid served as the criterion measure of the success of the judgments. The results were that the paired comparison procedure produced more reliable rankings than discrimination scores particularly when the difference between

When judgment and initiative fail: dilemmas in frontal lobe lesions.

A key part of neurosurgery is decision-making; not only by the neurosurgeons but also by the patients. The patient needs to decide: shall I do the operation? Now or later? With which doctor? At which medical center? In which country? But what if the exact condition that needs an operation causes you problems with making decisions, such as a frontal lobe lesion? Your decision-making capacity may need to go to others [1]. But what if those others may not act in your best interest? What if your decisions carry weight not just for you, but for someone else who depends on you, e.g. as a caregiver,

Measuring orthodontic treatment impact: Description or judgment, challenge or result.

INTRODUCTION: Determination of improvement in orthodontic treatment may depend on the measurement method used and the purpose. METHODS: Improvement after orthodontic treatment (from T1 to T2 [beginning to end of treatment]) was assessed 3 ways from a set of 98 patient records: (1) calculated by subtracting judges' assessments at T2 from T1 for records presented in random order, (2) judged as a holistic impression viewing T1 and T2 records side by side, and (3) determined from proxies (American Board of Orthodontics Discrepancy Index, the American Board of Orthodontics Objective Grading System
