Effect of kangaroo mother care on growth and development of low birthweight babies up to 12 months of age: a controlled clinical trial.

AIM: Kangaroo mother care (KMC) is a nonconventional low-cost method of newborn care. Our aim was to assess the effect of sustained KMC on the growth and development of low birthweight Indian babies up to the age of 12 months. METHODS: We enrolled 500 mother and baby pairs, in groups of five, in a parallel group controlled clinical trial. The three infants with the lowest birthweight in each group received KMC, while the other two received conventional care. All babies were exclusively breastfed for 6 months. Babies in the intervention group were provided KMC until the infant was 40 weeks of

Mothers' perceptions of the practice of kangaroo mother care for preterm neonates in sub-Saharan Africa: a qualitative systematic review protocol.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this review is to explore the experiences of mothers with the practice of kangaroo mother care (KMC) for preterm neonates at home in sub-Saharan Africa. INTRODUCTION: About 7000 newborn babies die every day around the world. About 80% of these deaths occur in sub-Saharan Africa and southern Asia. Preterm birth and low birth weight (LBW) are major causes of newborn deaths in these regions. Kangaroo mother care is an alternative way to care for LBW preterm neonates; however, the rate of practice remains low. Studies have identified a range of barriers, primarily at t

Safety of immediate skin-to-skin contact after vaginal birth in vigorous late preterm neonates - A pilot study.

BACKGROUND: To evaluate the safety of immediate skin-to-skin contact (SSC) in vigorous late preterm neonates, where observation under radiant warmer is standard of care, in a prospective, randomized, controlled, and equivalence pilot study. METHODS: Singletons born vaginally at 35-36 6/7 weeks gestation were randomized to initiate immediate SSC or standard of care with continuous pulse oximeter monitoring for the first hour of life. RESULTS: Forty-seven dyads were randomized to SSC (n = 21) or radiant warmer (n = 26). Vitals were recorded at designated time intervals to assess tolerance of p

Predictors of immediate mother-newborn skin-to-skin contact and missed contact in health facilities in Malawi: a multilevel analysis of the Malawi Demographic and Health Survey-2024.

AIM: This study aimed to examine the prevalence and predictors of immediate mother-newborn skin-to-skin contact (SSC) in Malawi and factors associated with missed SSC despite being delivered in health facilities. BACKGROUND: SSC immediately after birth is an evidence-based essential newborn care intervention associated with improved thermoregulation, early breastfeeding initiation, maternal-infant bonding, and neonatal survival. Although facility delivery is expected to promote SSC, a substantial proportion of newborns in low- and middle-income countries still do not receive this recommended

Effect of the kangaroo position on the electromyographic activity of preterm children: a follow-up study.

BACKGROUND: One of the components of the Kangaroo Method (KM) is the adoption of the Kangaroo Position. The skin-to-skin contact and the vertical position the child adopts when in this position may provide sensorial, vestibular and postural stimuli for the newborn. The Kangaroo Position may encourage vestibular stimuli and a flexed posture of the limbs, suggesting the hypothesis that the Kangaroo Position may have an impact on flexor muscle tone. The effect of these stimuli on the motor features of the newborn has not been the subject of much investigation. No study has yet been conducted to d

Survival status and predictors of mortality among preterm neonates admitted to neonatal intensive care unit of Addis Ababa public hospitals, Ethiopia, 2021. A prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Preterm related complications are the single largest direct cause of neonatal deaths throughout the world, responsible for 35% of the world's neonatal death (1.1 million deaths/year). In Ethiopia preterm related complications are still the leading cause of neonatal mortality. Identifying the hazard time to death and predictors of mortality play an important role to decrease preterm mortality. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the survival and predictors of mortality among preterm neonates admitted to neonatal intensive care unit of Addis Ababa public hospitals, Ethiopia, 202

Parent-Training with Kangaroo Care Impacts Infant Neurophysiological Development & Mother-Infant Neuroendocrine Activity.

A randomized control trial was conducted to investigate the effects of skin-to-skin, chest-to-chest contact (kangaroo care, KC) in mother-infant dyads on patterns of infant brain activity and associated mother-infant neurohormone releases. 33 mother-infant dyads participated during pregnancy (29-38 weeks gestation), at neonatal and 3-month periods. Overall, analyses indicated that: 1) infants in the KC group showed left frontal brain activation patterns (asymmetry and coherence) associated with KC training; 2) KC produced moderate to large increases in oxytocin levels; and 3) KC yielded modera

All-cause mortality and infection-related outcomes of hospital-initiated kangaroo care versus conventional neonatal care for low-birthweight infants: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Kangaroo care has a well-established role in preterm infant stabilisation and in protecting low-birthweight newborns from mortality. Yet kangaroo care is far from fully embedded in conventional inpatient neonatal care practice. The evidence on infection outcomes of hospital-initiated kangaroo care is unclear. We aimed to evaluate the existing evidence to understand the role of hospital-initiated kangaroo care in preventing mortality, sepsis, and invasive infection in low-birthweight infants. METHODS: In this systematic review and meta-analysis, we searched Embase, MEDLINE, Cochran

ECG challenge: a Kangaroo pitfall.

An apparently irregular rhythm was observed on bedside monitoring in a 32-week preterm infant receiving high-flow nasal cannula support during kangaroo care. The single‑lead ECG tracing demonstrated alternating QRS morphologies, initially raising concern for neonatal arrhythmia. Closer inspection revealed two independent rhythms with different cycle lengths, one representing incomplete monitor detection of the infant's underlying sinus rhythm and the other representing a second rhythm with distinct morphology. After repositioning the infant and adjusting the respiratory interface, the abnormal

Anthropological overview of kangaroo care in community settings in Madagascar.

The management of preterm births remains a major challenge in Madagascar, given the lack of equipped facilities in rural areas, and the absence of precise data concerning the incidence of such births. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends the kangaroo method (skin-to-skin contact) for the management of preterm infants. In this article, we examine the conditions for success and the obstacles facing kangaroo care in community settings in Madagascar. We performed a qualitative research, collecting data from the districts of Antananarivo and Mahajanga in 2021. In total, 54 semi-structured

Factors associated with high exclusive breastfeeding rates among preterm infants under 34 weeks of gestation in Da Nang, Vietnam: A retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Preterm infants have higher mortality than full-term infants. While breastfeeding dramatically reduces preterm death, it is limited by biological and practice barriers, particularly for babies born before 34 weeks gestational age. Da Nang Hospital for Women and Children developed a quality improvement approach to improve breastfeeding of preterm infants by strengthening feeding support, non-separation, and kangaroo mother care (KMC). METHODS: To determine breastfeeding outcomes following discharge and explore factors associated with improved feeding, mothers of infants under 34 we

Effect of Kangaroo Mother Care on Duration of Phototherapy on Neonatal Jaundice: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

Neonatal hyperbilirubinemia (NNH) is a common morbidity in the neonatal period, especially in the preterm and low-birth-weight babies. Low-birth-weight babies receiving phototherapy do not receive kangaroo mother care (KMC), which may hamper their weight gain and establishment of breast-feeding. The authors investigated the effect of KMC on duration of phototherapy in neonates admitted to a level III nursery with neonatal hyperbilirubinemia. Fifty neonates with gestational age of 30 to 40 wk, birth weight 1001-1999 g, and requiring phototherapy were randomized. Control group received photother
