Emergence of Parechovirus-A5 central nervous system infections in children from Kansas City, Missouri, USA.

BACKGROUND: Parechovirus-A5 (PeV-A5) blood and central nervous system (CNS) infections are rare in the United States of America (USA) and globally. We report an emergence of PeV-A5 infections among infants in Kansas City, Missouri, in 2024. METHODS: Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and blood samples from infants were tested for Parechovirus-A (PeV-A) in 2024 as a part of standard of care at Children's Mercy Kansas City (CM-KC). PeV-A testing included a two-step reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction, and genotyping was conducted using Sanger sequencing. We analyzed the amino acid sequences

Kansas beef bulls with chronic anaplasmosis demonstrate satisfactory breeding soundness outcomes at breeding soundness examination.

OBJECTIVE: The objectives of this study were to evaluate the prevalence of chronic Anaplasma marginale infection in beef bulls from eastern Kansas and compare breeding soundness parameters between A marginale-infected and uninfected bulls. We hypothesized that bulls with chronic anaplasmosis would have inferior breeding soundness exam (BSE) outcomes as a result of persistent A marginale infection or the consequence of initial clinical disease compared to uninfected bulls. ANIMALS: 535 client-owned beef bulls from eastern Kansas undergoing routine BSE. METHODS: Complete BSEs were conducted by

Institutional Tobacco Policy and Tobacco Use Among Kansas Sheriffs' Staff and Individuals Incarcerated in Jail.

This article describes the factors that contribute to Kansas county jails' tobacco culture to identify reasons for high tobacco use and intervention opportunities. Kansas sheriffs' offices were asked to complete a novel 26-item survey from August through November 2019, and 40% responded. A few reported that tobacco cessation counseling was available to staff (31%) or incarcerated individuals (12%). Seventy-nine percent reported that staff were permitted to use tobacco in designated places outside, whereas 24% reported that tobacco use by incarcerated individuals was permitted in designated pla

Emergence of Parechovirus A4 Central Nervous System Infections among Infants in Kansas City, Missouri, USA.

Among known parechovirus (PeV) types infecting humans, PeV-A3 (formerly HPeV3) and PeV-A1 (formerly HPeV1) are associated with pediatric central nervous system (CNS) infections. The prevalence of PeV-A3 among hospitalized infants with sepsis-like illness and viral CNS infection is well described; however, the contribution of PeV-A4 to infant CNS infection is relatively unexplored. We report the first 11 U.S. cases of PeV-A4 CNS infections occurring in Kansas City infants during 2010 to 2016 and compare the clinical presentation with that of PeV-A3. PeV-positive cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) specim

Consumption of caroltenoid-rich foods and central vision loss:a matched case-controlled study in Kansas.

The purpose of this study was to explore the association between consumption of carotenoid-rich foods and risk of central vision loss in 168 rural elders. Food consumption was estimated using a food frequency questionnaire. Median servings per week were used as the cut points for consumption levels. Odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were calculated by using discordant pairs. High consumption of corn bread indicated significant association with central vision loss (OR 0.4; 95% CI 0.2, 0.9). Insignificant inverse associations were observed for seven other foods and the summary i

Resident Pediatricians' Reflections on Mental Health Care in Kansas: Findings from a Focus Group.

INTRODUCTION: Kansas faces a critical pediatric mental health (MH) workforce shortage, leaving many children without timely access to specialty care. As a result, pediatric primary care physicians (PCPs) are increasingly responsible for MH care despite limited training, time, and system support. Understanding PCP perspectives is essential to developing interventions that expand pediatric MH capacity. METHODS: A qualitative focus group was conducted at the Kansas Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics' 2025 Progress in Pediatrics Conference in Wichita, Kansas. Practicing physicians part

Factors associated with binge drinking-Findings from 2019 Kansas behavioral risk factor surveillance system.

Background: In the U.S., excessive drinking accounts for one in 10 deaths among adults aged 20-64 years old. Binge drinking is a common form of excessive alcohol consumption that contributes to this chilling statistic. Binge drinking is defined as women consuming four or more drinks or men consuming five or more drinks within a 2-h time span. Examining existing data on risk factors for binge drinking can inform strategies to prevent this deadly practice. Methods: The 2019 Kansas Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) dataset consists of data collected from 11,368 non-institutionali

Emergency department visits and hospitalizations resulting from dog bites, Kansas City, MO, 1998-2002.

Dog bites are the second most costly public health problem in the United States with half of all Americans being bitten in their lifetime. Approximately 17 to 18 percent of dog bite injuries receive medical attention. Between 1998 and 2002, Kansas City, Missouri, residents made 3,467 emergency department visits for dog bite trauma and 96 individuals were hospitalized. We report the principal diagnoses for those visits and admissions. Median hospital charges for emergency department services and hospitalizations were $300 per visit and $4,698 per admission. We discuss deficiencies in the report

Perinatal periods of risk: analysis of fetal-infant mortality rates in Kansas City, Missouri.

OBJECTIVES: The Perinatal Periods of Risk (PPOR) technique was used to analyze resident fetal and infant death data from Kansas City, Missouri, for the period 1998-2002. Results offer important information that can be used to develop community-based prevention strategies related to racial/ethnic disparities in infant mortality rates (IMR). METHODS: The PPOR approach for fetal and infant mortality can be mapped by birthweight at delivery and time of death into four strategic prevention areas: 1) Maternal Health/Prematurity (MHP), 2) Maternal Care (MC), 3) Newborn Care (NC), and 4) Infant Healt

Outbreak of cryptosporidiosis among responders to a rollover of a truck carrying calves - Kansas, April 2013.

In April 2013, the Thomas County Health Department notified the Kansas Department of Health and Environment's Infectious Disease Epidemiology and Response section (KDHE) of two cases of cryptosporidiosis among emergency responders to a tractor-trailer rollover. The truck was carrying approximately 350 preweaned Holstein calves. An outbreak investigation was led by KDHE with assistance from the county health department; six cases of cryptosporidiosis were identified among the 15 emergency responders. No additional primary cases with this exposure or secondary cases were identified. Disease was

Indicators of mania in depressed outpatients: a retrospective analysis of data from the Kansas 1500 study.

OBJECTIVE: Previous prospective studies have shown that unipolar depressed patients often switch to a manic episode. Some of these studies have reported that the conversion to bipolar disorder is predicted by an early onset of depression, a positive family history for mania, and psychotic symptoms. The present study examines the strength of the relationship between these 3 indicators, both alone and in combination, and the presence of mania in a large retrospective analysis. METHOD: 1458 consecutive admissions to a large, Midwestern university outpatient clinic between 1981 and 1986 were inte

Spatial Analysis of Lung Cancer Mortality and Its Potential Risk Factors: A Regional Study in Kansas.

INTRODUCTION: Lung cancer is a leading cause of cancer deaths in the U.S., with significant geographic disparities in incidence and mortality. Understanding the relationship between spatial variations and other risk factors to lung cancer mortality counts (LCMC) is critical for guiding targeted public health interventions. OBJECTIVE: This study examines how spatial variations, demographic, socioeconomic, behavioral, health, and environmental risk factors are associated with LCMC in Kansas. METHODS: LCMC data from 105 Kansas counties were analyzed using Poisson and Negative Binomial models in

Outbreaks of Acute Gastrointestinal Illness Associated with a Splash Pad in a Wildlife Park - Kansas, June 2021.

In June 2021, Kansas state and county public health officials identified and investigated three cases of shigellosis (a bacterial diarrheal illness caused by Shigella spp.) associated with visiting a wildlife park. The park has animal exhibits and a splash pad. Two affected persons visited animal exhibits, and all three entered the splash pad. Nonhuman primates are the only known animal reservoir of Shigella. The splash pad, which sprays water on users and is designed so that water does not collect in the user area, was closed on June 19. The state and county public health codes do not include

From Infancy to Adolescence: The Kansas University School of Medicine-Salina: A Rural Medical Campus Story.

The University of Kansas School of Medicine established a rural regional campus in Salina, Kansas, in 2011. The creation of a four-year medical campus of only 32 total students in a town of less than 50,000 inhabitants appeared to contradict all previous practices where medical schools have been situated in large metropolitan cities with student bodies frequently in the hundreds. The rationale to open the Salina campus was to attract medical students with a desire to train in a rural environment, hoping that many would eventually elect to practice primary care in rural Kansas. The authors eval

Development of predictive models for geosmin-related taste and odor in Kansas, USA, drinking water reservoirs.

The presence of taste and odor compounds can greatly reduce the quality of drinking water supplies. Because the monetary costs associated with the removal of these compounds can be high, it is impractical for most facilities to continuously treat their raw water. Instead, new tools are needed to help predict when taste and odor events may be most likely to occur. Water quality data were collected between June and October in 2006-2007 from five Kansas (USA) reservoirs in order to develop predictive models for geosmin, a major taste and odor compound; two of these reservoirs were also sampled du

Living arrangements and nutrient intakes of healthy women age 65 and older: a study in Manhattan, Kansas.

One hundred healthy women over age 65 were recruited for a study to determine differences in nutrient intakes by living arrangement and to examine the effect of demographic characteristics, health habits, and social contacts on nutrient intakes. There were significant differences (p < 0.05) in the mean intakes for calcium and riboflavin between women living alone and women living with a spouse. There were no significant differences in health habits by living arrangement, but women living alone were more likely to have fewer social contacts than women living with a spouse (x2 = 38.25; p < 0.001

Haemosporidian parasites in Kansas birds: molecular and histological evidence implicating Culicoides haematopotus (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) in transmission.

Haemosporidian parasites of birds are maintained through complex interactions among vertebrate hosts, arthropod vectors, and the parasites themselves, yet their vector-parasite relationships remain poorly resolved under natural conditions in North America. Haemoproteus species are among the most prevalent avian blood parasites and have been implicated in reduced host fitness and malaria-like disease. Here, we combined molecular and histological approaches to investigate Haemoproteus prevalence in wild birds and to identify potential Culicoides biting midge vectors in Kansas. Blood meals from f
