BACKGROUND: Access to the full range of contraceptive methods is a core component of sexual and reproductive health. While Kenya had one of the highest rates of contraceptive use compared to other countries on the African continent, studies since 2015 have shown prevalence of use has fallen; contraceptive usage rates are estimated at 38.7%, significantly lower than Kenya's target of 62% and in a context of high rates of unsafe abortions and high maternal mortality. This scoping review investigates the role of gender norms in determining patterns of contraceptive usage among women of childbeari

Translocations of rhinoceros in the 1990s provided an opportunity to investigate the vectors of filaria in Nairobi National Park and Solio Ranch in Kenya. These are high-altitude sanctuaries where rhinos have ulcerative sores attributed to the filarial nematode Stephanofilaira dinniki. Rhinomusca dutoiti, the biting fly closely associated with rhino, did not harbour S. dinniki, but often harboured a small and/or a large form of Habronema. Rhinomusca dutoiti from Kenya was nearly identical to R. dutoiti from South Africa based on gross morphology and a 798 base pair sequence from the 3' end of

Yellow fever (YF) is a viral acute hemorrhagic illness caused by infected mosquitoes of the flavivirus family. The first yellow fever outbreak in Kenya was in 1992. Similar outbreaks were recorded in the western part of the country in 1993, 1995, and 2011, particularly in the Rift Valley province of Kenya. In early 2022, the viral acute illness resurfaced and hit Kenya. On January 12, 2022, the first case was discovered, with over 14 patients suffering from fever, jaundice, and joint and muscle pains. On March 4, 2022, a yellow fever outbreak re-emerged in Kenya, affecting 11 wards in Isiolo C

Ngari virus (NRIV) is a mosquito-borne reassortant orthobunyavirus that causes severe febrile illness and hemorrhagic fever in humans and small ruminants. Due to limited diagnostics and surveillance, NRIV has only been detected sporadically during Rift Valley fever virus outbreaks. Little is known on its interepidemic maintenance and geographic distribution. In this study, sera from cattle, goats, and sheep were collected through a cross-sectional survey after the rainy seasons between 2020 and 2021 in two pastoralist-dominated semiarid ecosystems, Baringo and Kajiado counties in Kenya. Newcastle disease (ND) is a major constraint to Kenya's poultry production, which is comprised of approximately 80% indigenous chickens (ICs; caged and free-range system) and 20% exotic chickens (intensive system). This study analyzed cases reported as suspected ND in Kenya between 2005 and 2015. Of the suspected 332 ND reported cases from the three production systems in 27 locations within six Kenyan Agro-Ecological Zones (AEZs), 140 diagnosed as infected with avian orthoavulavirus 1 (AOaV-1; formerly Newcastle disease virus) were present in every year in all AEZs. The numbers of AOaV-1-posit

The use of medicinal plants for treatment of humans and animals is entrenched in the Maasai culture and traditional knowledge related to it is passed on from one generation to the next. A handful of researchers have in the past decades documented this knowledge. No single study has documented medicinal plant uses of the Maasai community as a whole. This review provides a consolidated database of the diversity and uses of medicinal plants among the Maasai in Kenya. The study will help conserve traditional medicinal plant knowledge that is valuable for the development of modern medicine. Relevan

INTRODUCTION: Intestinal obstruction (IO) occurs when there is impedance to the flow of intestinal contents due to a congenital or acquired pathology, and is a common paediatric surgical emergency. This study aimed to assess the pattern and outcome of paediatric IO in western Kenya.
METHODS: A retrospective review of all recorded cases of mechanical IO in patients aged 15 years or below admitted at Tenwek Hospital between January 2009 and December 2013.
RESULTS: The cohort included a total of 217 children (130 boys and 87 girls). The mean age was 6.7 years (range: newborn-15 years), with mos

INTRODUCTION: Kenya is a developing country with a high rate of tuberculosis (TB) and a moderate HIV infection burden. No estimate of the burden of fungal diseases in Kenya is published.
METHODOLOGY: We used specific populations at risk and fungal infection frequencies from the literature to estimate national incidence or prevalence of serious fungal infections. Used sources were: 2010 WHO TB statistics, Kenya Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) Epidemic Update 2012, Kenya Facts and figures 2012, Kenya Demographic and Health Survey 2008-2009.
RESULTS: Of Kenya's population of ~40 milli

BACKGROUND: Many otherwise healthy Kenyans are required to obtain chest radiographs as part of routine medical examination to exclude pulmonary TB, a condition of significant public health concern. Many of these people are required to have these radiographs taken yearly as part of routine check-up. No local data is available to support this practice. Though a quick procedure to perform and readily available throughout the country, chest radiograph exposes the individual to a dose of ionising radiation. Ionising radiation is associated with increased risk of malignancy. The cost is also substan

BACKGROUND: Clinical scores such as quick sequential organ failure assessment (qSOFA), early warning score (EWS), and universal vital assessment (UVA) are commonly used as screening and prognostic tools in sepsis. However, consistent findings across different regions and hospital settings remain limited. This study aims to evaluate the performance of these clinical scores and identify predictors of survival in septic adults admitted to the ICU.
METHODS: A prospective longitudinal study was conducted from October 10, 2023, to October 9, 2024, involving adults admitted to the intensive care uni

Tungiasis is a neglected parasitic skin disease caused by the permanent penetration of the female sand flea Tunga penetrans (also called jigger flea) into the skin of its host. Growing urbanisation, improved housing and the use of appropriate footwear have presumably led to an overall reduction of the occurrence of this ectoparasitosis within the last few decades. However, it is still highly prevalent in regions where people live in extreme poverty, such as in many Latin American and African countries [1, 2]. We report the case of a 44-year-old woman who returned from an excursion trip to Keny

Tungiasis is an ectoparasitic skin disease caused by infestation by the female sand flea, Tunga penetrans. Prevalence in endemic areas may reach 83%, while it is rare in non-endemic areas. However, an increase in international travel to and from the affected regions may lead to a rise in the number of cases in non-endemic countries. We present a Danish case of tungiasis contracted during a trip to Kenya.

Investigations on vectors of leishmaniases in Kenya started only in the last 35 years when the visceral leishmaniasis assumed importance as a result of a major disease epidemic outbreak. Since then detailed investigations on vectors of visceral leishmaniasis as well as vectors of newly found species causing cutaneous leishmaniasis have resulted in identification of their main vectors. Synphlebotomus complex were shown to be the main vectors in Kitui focus while in the other foci Phlebotomus martini has been incriminated as the main vector and Sergentomyia garnhami as a suspected vector. The Lambwe Valley is shared between wild animals in a national park and adjacent human settlements with domestic livestock. Thicket and woodland in the valley are heavily infested with Glossina pallidipes. Rhodesian sleeping sickness continues to be a major human health hazard and livestock losses from nagana seriously affect the local economy. Epidemiology is characterized by periods of quiescence and flare-up, reflecting intermittent vector control measures to reduce transmission. The situation has been aggravated in recent years by extension of tsetse habitat and encroachment of settlements
