This case report aimed to verify the effect of lingual frenectomy on the functional anatomical aspects of the tongue, the phonetic-acoustic characteristics, and the magnitude of tongue movement in the phonemes [ɾ] and [l] after the lingual frenectomy. The anatomical characteristics of the lingual frenum and the functional aspects of the tongue were evaluated using the Protocol for Evaluation of the Lingual Frenum. The phonetic-acoustic particularities of speech were assessed through formant analysis using PRAAT software, and the evaluation of the magnitude of tongue movements was conducted via

BACKGROUND: Maxillary frenectomy in children is a common procedure, but concerns about scar tissue affecting diastema closure prevent many clinicians from treating prior to orthodontics.
OBJECTIVES: To determine if maxillary frenectomy is safe and if diastema size is affected by early treatment.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Paediatric patients with hypertrophic maxillary frena were treated under local anaesthesia with diode laser and CO2 laser. Diastema width was compared by calibrating and digitally measuring initial and postoperative intraoral photographs.
RESULTS: In total, 109 patients were i

OBJECTIVE: To describe the clinical application of a vascularized preputial free flap in the reconstruction of a large facial-labial defect.
STUDY DESIGN: Case report.
ANIMALS: An adult neutered male mongrel dog with a large left facial-labial defect.
METHODS: A preputial free flap was created by elevating the cranial part of the prepuce, using the ipsilateral caudal superficial epigastric vessels as a vascular pedicle. The flap was transferred to the facial-labial defect and the donor vessels anastomosed to the sublingual artery and vein, using standard microvascular technique.
RESULTS: T

Six cases of a peculiar type of upper lip malformation have been observed by the author during the last 40 years. The malformations in this case series were remarkably similar, suggesting a single teratologic entity not been reported before. The six patients included 1-, 11-, 4-, and 6-month-old males, a 20 year-old male, and an 11-year-old female. Each was characterized by a crooked folded philtrum, a flat thin vermilion region of the upper lip, and high-positioned ala(e), that was unilateral or bilateral. The upper median incisors were separated occasionally by the thick lip frenulum without

During the last twenty years the opinions about the necessity of an adequate gingival band for dental health are developing. Modern tendencies, nowadays, provide gingival increase only in few cases: 1. difficulties in plaque removing; 2. frenum connection in marginal gingiva; 3. gingival absence around prosthetic crown; 4. gingival recessions. The Authors, according to literature, data consider the indications to gingival increment and affirm the importance of a correct pre-orthodontic and periodontal evaluation in order to avoid periodontal attachment-loss using an easy surgery.

Maxillary frenectomies are invasive surgical procedures that are increasingly being performed in dental clinics to address functional and esthetic concerns. The purpose of this case report is to describe a 16-month-old boy who presented with oral bleeding lasting over 12 hours following a laser maxillary labial frenectomy, which eventually led to a diagnosis of severe hemophilia A. This case highlights the importance of thorough patient assessment, including the need to rule out systemic conditions, such as coagulopathies, prior to frenectomies. This report also raises concerns about the numbe

Here, we report the case of a 63-year-old female patient who presented with emptying symptoms and was subsequently diagnosed with delayed labial agglutination. The adhered labia minora were divided by blunt dissection, and a topical estrogen ointment was applied after surgery. The patient's voiding symptoms were completely resolved and no recurrence of labial agglutination was noted 3 months after surgery. Labial agglutination is rare but often manifests with nonspecific emptying symptoms. Nevertheless, it can be easily diagnosed on physical examination and successfully treated by surgical int

BACKGROUND: Newborn babies often present oral conditions of anykloglossia and tied maxillary fraena (lip-ties) associated with problems that can be related to breastfeeding. Many breastfeeding problems experienced by mothers and their babies may be attributed to abnormal attachments of the tongue and/or a maxillary lip-tie.
REVIEW: The various types of both lip and tongue ties are reviewed. The diagnostic tools for dental practitioners are evaluated and treatment options these affected infants using either a 1064 InGaAsP semiconductor (diode) laser or a 2940 Er:YAG laser are described.

Mucogingival surgery currently encompasses surgical management of many defects thought to be untreatable when the term mucogingival surgery was introduced in the 1950s. Mucogingival surgery has now expanded beyond the treatment of recession and problems associated with attached gingiva. Additionally, it would now include correction of ridge form, exposing unerupted teeth for orthodontic treatment, crown lengthening for esthetic purposes, and frenal surgery. With this in mind, mucogingival surgery has been redefined as "periodontal plastic surgery."

Dentoalveolar surgery in children presents general dentists with unique challenges not encountered in adults. The long-term effects that treatments have on these children must always be taken into consideration. A clear understanding of the growth and development of pediatric patients is necessary to correctly identify dental abnormalities.

Orofaciodigital syndrome I is a syndrome, which affects the maxillofacial region. Abnormally developed vestibular frenulum, cleft tongue, asymmetric cleft palate, pseudocleft of the upper lip and hypoplasia of the nasal cartilages are some of the other features. There are some malformations in foot and hand fingers and also mild mental deficiency is present. OFD I syndrome follows an chi-linked dominant mode of transmission trait limited to females and lethal in males. Because of the esthetic and functional manifestations in the maxillofacial region, the syndrome has great importance for pedia

Chronic mouth breathing may adversely affect craniofacial development in children and may result in anatomical changes that directly impact the stability and collapsibility of the upper airway during sleep. Mouth breathing is a multifactorial problem that can be attributed to structural, functional, and neurological etiologies, which are not all mutually exclusive. While therapeutic interventions (myofunctional, speech and swallowing, occupational, and craniosacral therapy) may address the functional and behavioral factors that contribute to mouth breathing, progress may sometimes be limited b

Introduction: The labial frenum is a fold of mucous membrane that attaches the lip and the cheek to the alveolar mucosa, the gingiva, and the underlying periosteum. In some cases, its presence can cause a midline diastema, periodontal diseases related to food impaction, or retention of biofilm, among others. In such cases, lip frenectomy is indicated as treatment, which can be performed with a scalpel (conventional method), an electric scalpel, or a surgical laser. Objective: To show a clinical case performed at Laser Extension Project in Dentistry, Federal University of Maranhão grounded in a

Oral-facial-digital (OFD) syndrome is the collective name of a group of rare inherited syndromes characterized by malformations of the face, oral cavity, hands and feet. OFD syndrome type I, also known as the Papillon-League-Psaume syndrome warrants our attention because early diagnosis from an odontologic viewpoint will minimize the sequalae of developing physical and dental abnormalities. The present article highlights the clinical as well as the radiographic findings and the treatment that was done of a 10-year-old girl child diagnosed with OFD I.
