Metabolic-digestive clinical disorders of lactating dairy cows were associated with alterations of rumination, physical activity, and lying behavior monitored by an ear-attached sensor.

The objective of this observational cohort study was to characterize the pattern of rumination time (RT), physical activity (PA), and lying time (LT) monitored by an automated health monitoring system, based on an ear-attached sensor, immediately before, during, and after clinical diagnosis (CD) of metabolic-digestive disorders. Sensor data were collected from 820 lactating Holstein cows monitored daily from calving up to 21 DIM for detection of health disorders (HD). Cows were grouped retrospectively in the no-clinical health disorder group (NCHD; n = 616) if no HD were diagnosed, or the meta

Increased Brain Lactate During Depressive Episodes and Reversal Effects by Lithium Monotherapy in Drug-Naive Bipolar Disorder: A 3-T 1H-MRS Study.

OBJECTIVE: Mitochondrial dysfunction and energy metabolism impairment are key components in the pathophysiology of bipolar disorder (BD) and may involve a shift from aerobic to anaerobic metabolism. Measurement of brain lactate in vivo using proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (H-MRS) represents an important tool to evaluate mitochondrial and metabolic dysfunction during mood episodes, as well as to monitor treatment response. To date, very few studies have quantified brain lactate in BD. In addition, no study has longitudinally evaluated lactate using H-MRS during depressive episodes or it

Elevated serum lactate dehydrogenase isoenzymes and aspartate transaminase distinguish Albers-Schönberg disease (Chloride Channel 7 Deficiency Osteopetrosis) among the sclerosing bone disorders.

Osteopetrosis (OPT) refers to the consequences of generalized failure of skeletal resorption during growth. Most cases are explained by loss-of-function mutation within the genes that encode either chloride channel 7 (CLCN7) or a vacuolar proton pump subunit (TCIRG1), each compromising acid secretion by osteoclasts. Patients suffer fractures and sometimes cranial nerve entrapment and insufficient medullary space for hematopoiesis. In 1996, we reported that a high serum level of the brain isoenzyme of creatine kinase (BB-CK), the CK of osteoclasts, characterizes OPT dueamong the sclerosing bone

Safety of COVID-19 Vaccination During Pregnancy and Lactation: A VigiBase Analysis.

BACKGROUND: There is limited evidence on the safety of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination during pregnancy and lactation. Thus, we aimed to evaluate the association between COVID-19 vaccination during pregnancy and lactation and reporting risk of adverse pregnancy or lactation outcomes. METHODS: Using VigiBase, we performed a disproportionality analysis with case/non case design. Cases were defined based on the Standardized MedDRA Queries (SMQs) of "pregnancy and neonatal topics" and non-cases were defined as all other adverse events. We included all reports with COVID-19 vaccine

Assessment of the Relationship between Postpartum Health and Mid-Lactation Performance, Behavior, and Feed Efficiency in Holstein Dairy Cows.

The objective of this study was to investigate the relationships between postpartum health disorders and mid-lactation performance, feed efficiency, and sensor-derived behavioral traits. Multiparous cows (n = 179) were monitored for health disorders for 21 days postpartum and enrolled in a 45-day trial between 50 to 200 days in milk, wherein feed intake, milk yield and components, body weight, body condition score, and activity, lying, and feeding behaviors were recorded. Feed efficiency was measured as residual feed intake and the ratio of fat- or energy-corrected milk to dry matter intake. C

Multiple-trait estimates of genetic parameters for metabolic disease traits, fertility disorders, and their predictors in Canadian Holsteins.

Producer-recorded health data for metabolic disease traits and fertility disorders on 35,575 Canadian Holstein cows were jointly analyzed with selected indicator traits. Metabolic diseases included clinical ketosis (KET) and displaced abomasum (DA); fertility disorders were metritis (MET) and retained placenta (RP); and disease indicators were fat-to-protein ratio, milk β-hydroxybutyrate, and body condition score (BCS) in the first lactation. Traits in first and later (up to fifth) lactations were treated as correlated in the multiple-trait (13 traits in total) animal linear model. Bayesian me

Heel erosion and other interdigital disorders in dairy cows: associations with season, cow characteristics, disease, and production.

Epidemiologic associations between variables obtainable from dairy cow records and the occurrence of heel erosion, interdigital dermatitis, and interdigital hyperplasia at claw trimmings were estimated with multivariable logistic regression analysis on data from 1170 and 542 cows in lactation 1 and lactations 2 to 9, respectively. In the 17 herds, heel erosion, interdigital dermatitis, and hyperplasia occurred among 43.8, 4.5, and .9% of cows in lactation 1 and among 69.1, 7.6 and 5.9% of cows in lactations 2 to 9, respectively. Severity of heel erosion increased with parity, and risk increase

Parathyroid Disease in Pregnancy and Lactation: A Narrative Review of the Literature.

Pregnancy and lactation are characterized by sophisticated adaptations of calcium homeostasis, aiming to meet fetal, neonatal, and maternal calcium requirements. Pregnancy is primarily characterized by an enhancement of intestinal calcium absorption, whereas during lactation additional calcium is obtained through resorption from the maternal skeleton, a process which leads to bone loss but is reversible following weaning. These maternal adaptations during pregnancy and lactation may influence or confound the presentation, diagnosis, and management of parathyroid disorders such as primary hyper

Reasons for culling in French Holstein cows.

The study describes the profiles of culled cows in order to assess the possible contribution to economic losses due to health disorders. Data regarding dates of birth, final calving and culling, parity at culling, milk yield at the two first test-days of the final lactation and reason(s) for culling were collected in a 5-year survey, carried out from 1989 to 1994 in 84 commercial Holstein farms in western France. Polytomous logistic regression was used to assess the relationship between parity, calving-to-culling interval, milk yield and eight groups of primary culling reasons (i.e. udder diso

Relationship among blood indicators of lipomobilization and hepatic function during early lactation in high-yielding dairy cows.

Blood indicators are used as a tool to diagnose metabolic disorders. The present work was conducted to study the relationships among blood indicators of lipomobilization and hepatic function in high-yielding dairy cows. Two groups of Holstein cows were studied: 27 early lactation cows and 14 mid lactation cows from four different herds with similar husbandry characteristics in Galicia, Spain. Blood samples were obtained to measure beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB), non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA), triglycerides (TG), and the activity of aspartate transaminase (AST) and gamma-glutamyl transferase. Association between culling reasons and lactation curve components in Holstein cows.

The lactation curve expresses the pattern of milk production throughout the lactation period. Such a curve provides insights to assist in designing proper management strategies. Culling dairy cows directly influences the farm economy and animal welfare. The lactation curve components (LCC) of culled Holstein cows, compared with those of retained cows, have not been studied. This study aims to investigate the LCC in culled Holstein cows compared with those retained unculled in the same herd. This research included 27,297 complete lactation records for Holstein cows described as retained or cull

Hypoparathyroidism in pregnancy.

Pregnancy and lactation are associated with remarkable changes in calcium homeostasis, resulting from pregnancy-induced alterations in the production, metabolism and excretion of calcium and calcitropic hormones. Therefore, the clinical course of disorders affecting the parathyroid glands during pregnancy and lactation is often atypical. As the symptoms experienced by patients with parathyroid disorders are not specific, their diagnosis during gestation and breastfeeding may be sometimes very difficult. If left untreated, parathyroid disorders may pose a significant risk to the mother and fetu

Calcium metabolism in pregnancy and lactation.

Homeostatic adaptation to maternal calcium metabolism is a prerequisite for optimal delivery of sufficient calcium to the fetus and neonate during pregnancy and lactation, respectively. This article outlines the major adaptations known to occur and the physiological regulators likely to be principally involved. Importantly, different adaptive responses are used in pregnancy and lactation. The rarity of calcium disorders in pregnancy underscores the successful implementation of these adaptations in most women. For those few women with either pre-existing or pregnancy-acquired disorders of calci

Breast disorders in nursing mothers.

Family physicians should be familiar with the details of breast feeding and with the breast disorders that may occur during lactation. Such disorders range from relatively minor problems, such as sore nipples, milk stasis and mastitis, to more serious conditions, such as abscesses and neoplasms. Inflammatory changes are easily treated with frequent breast emptying; infectious processes require antibiotics. Surgical intervention may be needed for some conditions. Pregnancy or lactation should not delay or alter the diagnosis and treatment of suspected breast carcinoma.

Maternal N-acetylcysteine supplementation in lactation ameliorates metabolic and cognitive deficits in adult offspring exposed to maternal obesity.

Maternal obesity in pregnancy and lactation is linked to metabolic disturbances and neurodevelopmental problems in offspring, increasing the risk of psychiatric disorders in adulthood. We proposed that maternal N-acetyl cysteine (NAC) supplementation during lactation, a critical period for neurodevelopment, potentially protects offspring from developing cognitive impairment in adulthood. Fifteen young female ICR mice were randomly allocated to different experimental groups: high-fat diet (HFD; 60.3% fat before mating, during pregnancy and lactation), HFD-NAC of 300 mg/kg/day during lactation,

Pregnancy and Lactation Impair Subchondral Bone Leading to Reduced Rat Supraspinatus Tendon-to-Bone Insertion Site Failure Properties.

Pregnant women experience weight gain, gait changes, and biochemical fluctuations that impair joint function and alter the maternal skeleton. Hormonal changes increase pelvic ligament laxity in preparation for childbirth and affect peripheral joint laxity. Calcium demands also rise during pregnancy and lactation, resulting in reduced bone mineral density (BMD) and maternal bone loss. Altered tendon properties and bone loss during pregnancy and lactation may impact tendon insertion sites, such as rotator cuff tendons where insertion site ruptures are common. However, the effects of pregnancy an

Selected serum acute-phase proteins in peripartum sows and evaluation of their diagnostic usefulness.

Lactation impairment in sows is a frequent and significant clinical problem. Due to a complex aetiopathogenesis, early diagnosis of postpartum dysgalactia syndrome (PDS) is difficult and so far has usually been based on physical examination performed in the first days after farrowing. To date no data have been provided on the diagnostic usefulness of acute phase proteins (APP) in early diagnosis of peripartum disorders, including lactation disorders in sows. This study aimed at measuring the serum concentration of selected APP (C-reactive protein (CRP), haptoglobin (Hp), serum amyloid A (SAA)

Effects of Chronic Central Arginine Vasopressin (AVP) on Maternal Behavior in Chronically Stressed Rat Dams.

Exposure of mothers to chronic stressors during pregnancy or the postpartum period often leads to the development of depression, anxiety, or other related mood disorders. The adverse effects of mood disorders are often mediated through maternal behavior and recent work has identified arginine vasopressin (AVP) as a key neuropeptide hormone in the expression of maternal behavior in both rats and humans. Using an established rodent model that elicits behavioral and physiological responses similar to human mood disorders, this study tested the effectiveness of chronic AVP infusion as a novel trea

Relationship of Postpartum Levels of Cystatin and High-Sensitivity C-Reactive Protein and Duration of Lactation in Mothers with Previous Gestational Hypertension or Preeclampsia.

Background: Women with hypertensive disorders of pregnancy are at increased risk of cardiovascular disease in later life. We sought to determine the association between lactation and markers of maternal cardiovascular health among postpartum women with and without hypertensive disorders of pregnancy via measures of inflammation (high-sensitivity C-reactive protein [hsCRP]) and renal function (cystatin C). Materials and Methods: This prospective cohort study enrolled primarily overweight and obese women during early pregnancy. At a postpartum study visit occurring 6-24 months after delivery, we
