D-Lactic Acid as a Metabolite: Toxicology, Diagnosis, and Detection.

Two enantiomers of lactic acid exist. While L-lactic acid is a common compound of human metabolism, D-lactic acid is produced by some strains of microorganism or by some less relevant metabolic pathways. While L-lactic acid is an endogenous compound, D-lactic acid is a harmful enantiomer. Exposure to D-lactic acid can happen by various ways including contaminated food and beverages and by microbiota during some pathological states like short bowel syndrome. The exposure to D-lactic acid cannot be diagnosed because the common analytical methods are not suitable for distinguishing between the tw

[The effect of different lactic acid isomers in the colon of rats].

Depending on quantity and/or quality, the presence of lactic acid in the colonic lumen may be associated with metabolic damage of the colon. The influence exerted on the rat colon by the different isomers and racemic of the lactic acid, used at two extreme dilutions (20 and 100 mEq/l), has been the subject of study in this paper. The modifications on pH, water and electrolytes are associated with the absorptive/secretory action of the colonic wall. In addition, a study has been made on the influence of lactic acid on the colonic mucus and albumin permeation. Histopathologic studies of the caec

Effect of dapsone on blood lactic and pyruvic acids in leprosy.

The effect of leprosy and dapsone (DDS) on the basal levels of blood lactic and pyruvic acids has been studied. In untreated tuberculoid and lepromatous leprosy patients both of the acids were found to be significantly raised. The rise in lactic acid was relatively more in tuberculoid patients; whereas pyruvic was relatively more elevated in lepromatous cases. Both the acids showed a tendency to increase with the duration of the disease in lepromatous leprosy. Statistically no significant differences were observed in lactic acid levels between untreated and treated cases of both forms of lepro

The inhibitory effect of glycolic acid and lactic acid on melanin synthesis in melanoma cells.

Alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) such as glycolic acid (GA) and lactic acid (LA) have been reported to be effective in treating pigmentary lesions such as melasma, solar lentigines, and postinflammatory hyperpigmentation. The mechanism of this effect might be due to epidermal remodeling and accelerated desquamation, which would result in quick pigment dispersion. However, the direct effect of AHAs on melanin synthesis has not yet been well studied. To elucidate such a direct effect of AHAs on melanogenesis, we performed melanin assays, growth curve determinations, Northern and Western blotting for m

Universal diseased-site targeting via glycolysis-driven lactic acid gradient.

Targeted delivery of protein therapeutics remains challenging for translating biologics into effective treatments. Here, we introduce a universal strategy leveraging elevated glycolysis, a hallmark of many pathological states, and its resulting extracellular acidification as a navigational cue. Therapeutic proteins are encapsulated within pH-responsive polymer shells that remain near-neutral at physiological pH but gradually gain positive charge under acidic conditions. This dynamic charge modulation allows nanocapsules to sense pH gradients between healthy and diseased tissues, directing them

Lactic acid fermentation of non-conventional plant-based protein extract.

The increasing demand for plant-based foods necessitates the development of effective preservation methods to ensure safety and quality. This study evaluated the effectiveness of biopreservation using eight plant-based protein extracts (PBPEs) (pea, faba, soy, potato, pumpkin, hazelnuts, rice, and hemp) fermented with 12 different lactic acid bacteria (LAB) strains from four species. The effectiveness of LAB biopreservation was assessed both at the endpoint and in real-time using impedometric analysis and was found to depend on both the matrix and the strain. Among the 12 LAB strains, Lactobac

Poly-L-Lactic Acid Reconstitution Technique to Reduce Needle Obstruction.

Facial lipoatrophy in patients with HIV is a well-established adverse effect of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART), further augmenting stigma and decreasing treatment adherence. Poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) is approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for the correction of facial fat loss in this population. Unfortunately, needle obstruction from microparticles is a common obstacle that clinicians may encounter during this procedure. We describe a simple and effective way to mitigate this problem by utilizing a water bath to warm the filler prior to injection.

Constipation anti-aging effects by dairy-based lactic acid bacteria.

Constipation, which refers to difficulties in defecation and infrequent bowel movement in emptying the gastrointestinal system that ultimately produces hardened fecal matters, is a health concern in livestock and aging animals. The present study aimed to evaluate the potential effects of dairy-isolated lactic acid bacteria (LAB) strains to alleviate constipation as an alternative therapeutic intervention for constipation treatment in the aging model. Rats were aged via daily subcutaneous injection of D-galactose (600 mg/body weight [kg]), prior to induction of constipation via oral administrat

Lactic acid induced defense responses in tobacco against Phytophthora nicotianae.

Induced resistance is considered an eco-friendly disease control strategy, which can enhance plant disease resistance by inducing the plant's immune system to activate the defense response. In recent years, studies have shown that lactic acid can play a role in plant defense against biological stress; however, whether lactic acid can improve tobacco resistance to Phytophthora nicotianae, and its molecular mechanism remains unclear. In our study, the mycelial growth and sporangium production of P. nicotianae were inhibited by lactic acid in vitro in a dose-dependent manner. Application of lacti

Furfuryl Alcohol and Lactic Acid Blends: Homo- or Co-Polymerization?

Furfuryl alcohol (FA) and lactic acid (LA) are two of the most interesting biomolecules, easily obtainable from sugars and hence extremely attractive for green chemistry solutions. These substances undergo homopolymerization and they have been rarely considered for copolymerization. Typically, FA homopolymerizes exothermically in an acid environment producing inhomogeneous porous materials, but recent studies have shown that this reaction can be controlled and therefore we have implemented this process to trigger the copolymerization with LA. The mechanical tests have shown that the blend cont
