Langerhan cell histiocytosis is a rare disease and usually occurs in paediatric age group. This disease may involve single or multiple organs system and has an unpredictable course of disease. The involvement of head and neck region are almost 90% of cases, however maxillary sinus involvement is very rare. We report a case of 2 year old boy presented with multi organ LCH (orbit, skull, sinus and liver). The mainstay treatment for this high risk multi organ LCH group is chemotherapy. Unfortunately, although with the advancement of treatment, their mortality rate is still high.

Langerhans cell histiocytosis can involve single or multiple organ/tissue systems and may go undiagnosed for years until it enters the clinician's differential diagnosis framework. We report on a young patient who initially presented with diabetes insipidus and subsequently with pyrexia of unknown origin. She progressed from single system Langerhans cell histiocytosis to multisystem involvement and remains in long-term remission following chemotherapy.

A 17-year-old male presented for dermatologic consultation with slightly elevated reddish papules covered by yellowish scales in the scalp for the last two years and reddish and indurated ulcers in the perineum lasting six months. Additional complaints included polyuria, polydipsia, delay in the development of secondary sexual characteristics and hearing loss of the right ear secondary to a medium otitis. Lesions from scalp and perineum were sampled for histopathologic examination and revealed a dense cellular infiltrate made up of mononuclear cells with conspicuous eosinophilic cytoplasm and

Cerebral involvement in the course of Langerhans cell histiocytosis has been described especially in children. It is mainly characterized by hypothalamic-pituitary functional deficit, due to granuloma growth. Here we describe a rare case of adult-onset histiocytosis developing a neurodegenerative disease resembling multiple system atrophy. The patient we describe here started suffering from subtle personality changes which progressed to a severe neurological syndrome 2 years after the diagnosis of histiocytosis. Twenty years before she developed a diabetes insipidus, without any apparent cause

A case of multisystem Langerhans cell histiocytosis with pituitary involvement nearly 20 years after initial presentation. A 48-year-old man had histiocytosis X 22 years ago initially involving the groin; subsequently his external auditory meatus, scalp, gum, mandibular bone, perineum and axilla were involved and treated. The pituitary gland was involved 4 years ago. A thyrotropin-releasing hormone test showed delayed response suggestive of hypothalamic disease. Prolactin levels were normal. A gonadotropin-releasing hormone test showed impaired testosterone and gonadotrophin response in keepin

Langerhans' cell histiocytosis (LCH) is a disease characterised by pathologic accumulation and proliferation of histiocytes, cells from the monocyte-macrophage system, in various tissues and organs. In this retrospective study we analyzed patients charts treated in the Department of pediatric hematology and oncology at the University Hospital Zagreb with the diagnosis of LCH. Twenty-two children were diagnosed between January 1st 1996 and December 31st 2010, and all were treated with chemotherapy. 19 patients survived (86%) and the remaining 3 (14%), all under the age of 2 with multisystem dis

Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is a rare disease characterised by monoclonal proliferation and infiltration of organs by large mononuclear cells. Organs commonly involved include the lungs and pituitary gland. However, the disease association with hypogonadotrophic hypogonadism has not been reported in the literature, to our knowledge. We report a 26-year-old Chinese man with LCH, recurrent pneumothoraces, diabetes insipidus and hypogonadotrophic hypogonadism. The clinical features and management of the disease are reviewed.

Langerhans' cell histiocytosis (LCH) is a neoplastic disease due to uncontrolled proliferation of Langerhans' cells (LCs); damage to organs involved appears to be due to the various cytokines secreted. The true cause of LCH remains a mystery. LCH can present at any age; there is female predominance and the skin is often the first site to be involved. Scaly papules, vesicles, purpuric nodules, plaques and ulcers are the main diverse presentations typically found on the scalp, flexures (including the perineum), crease below the breast, palms, soles and nails. The patient described here is a 35-y

The predominant clinical and radiological features of Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis (LCH) in children are due to osseous involvement. Extra-osseous disease is far less common, occurring in association with bone disease or in isolation. In the present study, LCH was presumptively diagnosed on Ultrasound guided Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) of the mediastinal lymph node in a 18 month-old child. The diagnosis was confirmed by histological examination of the biopsy material.S-100 protein localization in the LCH cells is often positive on immunohistochemistry.

Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) affecting child vulva alone is a very rare disease. Only 13 cases of primary vulvar LCH have been previously reported in the medical literature. We describe an additional case in which the LCH was confined to the vulva, with review of the literature. A 16.5-year-old girl presented with papulous and ulcerative lesions on her labia majora and minora. The biopsy revealed a typical histopathologic finding consistent with LCH. A metastatic work-up did not reveal any evidence of the disease except on the vulva. Treatment was carried out according to LCH II protoco

Langerhans' cell histiocytosis (LCH) is a rare condition of children and young adults in which Langerhans' cells proliferate. The clinical spectrum ranges from solitary or few focal lesions to multisystem involvement mimicking vasculitis or hematological malignancy. Focal bone lesions, known as eosinophilic granulomas, are the most common manifestations. Eosinophilic granuloma usually presents with a variable combination of pain, swelling, fracture, and fever. Facial bone involvement may manifest as an ear discharge, hearing loss, or exophthalmos. Nerve root pain is rarely reported, even in pa

Nail involvement, which is distinctly uncommon in Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH), is characterized by various features like longitudinal grooving, purpuric striae, hyperkeratosis, subungual pustules, deformity, loss of nail plate, paronychia, onycholysis, and pitting. Here the authors report the case of a child who presented with isolated nail unit changes due to Langerhans cell histiocytosis before the evolution of systemic features. The authors suggest that LCH should be considered in differential diagnoses of nail changes that are resistant to therapy.

Liver involvement in Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) typically presents with hepatomegaly and other signs of liver dysfunction. We present an 11-month-old child having only minimally elevated liver enzymes as an indication of liver involvement. Using sonography as the initial diagnostic tool followed by MRI, LCH of the liver was revealed. A review of sonographic, CT, MRI and MR cholangiopancreatography findings in liver LCH is presented. We recommend that physicians consider sonography and MRI screening for liver involvement in patients with newly diagnosed LCH, as periportal involvement m

A cutaneous lesion as sole manifestation of adult Langerhans cell histiocytosis is rare. We report a 65-year old female who presented with vulvar ulcers. Histological examination of the ulcer showed diffuse proliferation of histiocytic cells with large bright cytoplasm that were positively stained for anti-S-100 protein and anti-CD1a antibodies by immunohistochemistry. Electron microscopy demonstrated Birbeck granules in the cytoplasm of the cells. Since there was no other organ involvement, the patient was treated by complete surgical excision without recurrence or other-organ involvement in

INTRODUCTION: Adult pulmonary Langerhans'cell histiocytosis, also referred to as histiocytosis X, is a disorder of unknown etiology which affects preferentially young smokers. The disease is characterized by granulomatous lesions which progressively invade and destroy distal airways, leading to the formation of characteristic cicatricial kystic lesions. Florid granulomas contain numerous Langerhans'cells, antigen-presenting cells of the dendritic cell lineage, associated with T lymphocytes and eosinophils. The diagnosis rests on the combination of clinical and radiologic data, and particularly

Reticular dysgenesis is a rare inherited immunodeficiency characterized by the lack of blood monocytes and neutrophils and low lymphocyte counts, contrasting with normal red blood cell counts and normal or decreased platelet counts. Whether dendritic cells or macrophages, both of which derive primarily from blood monocytes, are affected in this condition remains unknown. We studied 7 patients with reticular dysgenesis. Macrophages were present in normal numbers in the dermis and in the atrophic lymphoid tissues of these patients, proving that at least some subsets of macrophages can differenti

BACKGROUND: Langerhans' cell histiocytosis, a rare condition caused by the proliferation of abnormal Langerhans' cells ('LCH cells') and an accompanying granulomatous infiltrate, can affect several organs including the ear. External and middle ear involvement are common with a reported incidence as high as 61%. The bony labyrinth is resistant to erosion by the granulation tissue, thereby protecting the cochlea and vestibular structures. Probably for this reason, involvement of the inner ear is rare, with few case reports in the literature.
PATIENTS: We report two girls, one with bilateral and
