[Long-term course after inpatient speech therapy: educational and language development of children with severe specific language impairment (SLI)].

BACKGROUND: Studies from primarily English-speaking countries have shown that specific language impairments can lead to disadvantages in educational and professional development. Corresponding studies for Germany have not been published. This study surveys the educational and language outcomes of adolescents and young adults who were treated in an inpatient setting during childhood. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 193 young adults who had received inpatient treatment between 1998 and 2005 at the Department of Communication Disorders of the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Head, and Neck S

Empowering Language Development: A Comparative Analysis of Parent-Implemented Intervention and Therapist-Implemented Intervention in Preschoolers With Language Delay.

PURPOSE: Evidence supporting parent-implemented intervention (PII) in treating young children with language delays mostly exists in Indo-European languages. Given the linguistic diversity and cultural differences, the purpose of the study is to examine the efficacy of PII compared to therapist-implemented intervention (TII) in treating Hebrew-speaking preschool children with language delay. METHOD: In a prospective controlled study using a convenience sample, 40 toddlers with language delays were divided into two intervention groups, PII (N = 19) versus TII (N = 21). Those in the TII group pa

Measuring Chinese English-as-a-foreign-language learners' resilience: Development and validation of the foreign language learning resilience scale.

Despite the growing body of research on the factors of resilience in diverse fields, there is still a dearth of particular attention on foreign language learning resilience. To fill the gap, this study seeks to develop the foreign language learning resilience scale (FLLRS) to measure its psychometric scale reliability and validity in Chinese English-as-a-foreign-language contexts. Valid data were collected from 313 Chinese English-as-a-foreign-language college students who voluntarily participated in the survey. The FLLRS was validated based on a series of reliability (e.g., item analysis, spl

Attentional abilities constrain language development: A cross-syndrome infant/toddler study.

Typically developing (TD) infants adapt to the social world in part by shifting the focus of their processing resources to the relevant aspects of a visual scene. Any impairment in visual orienting may therefore constrain learning and development in domains such as language. However, although something is known about visual orienting in infants at risk of autism, very little is known about it in infants/toddlers with other neurodevelopmental disorders. This is partly because previous studies focused on older children and rarely compared the children to both chronological age (CA)- and mental a

Delayed development of neural language organization in very preterm born children.

This study investigates neural language organization in very preterm born children compared to control children and examines the relationship between language organization, age, and language performance. Fifty-six preterms and 38 controls (7-12 y) completed a functional magnetic resonance imaging language task. Lateralization and signal change were computed for language-relevant brain regions. Younger preterms showed a bilateral language network whereas older preterms revealed left-sided language organization. No age-related differences in language organization were observed in controls. Electrophysiological auditory responses and language development in infants with periventricular leukomalacia.

This study presents evidence suggesting that electrophysiological responses to language-related auditory stimuli recorded at 46weeks postconceptional age (PCA) are associated with language development, particularly in infants with periventricular leukomalacia (PVL). In order to investigate this hypothesis, electrophysiological responses to a set of auditory stimuli consisting of series of syllables and tones were recorded from a population of infants with PVL at 46weeks PCA. A communicative development inventory (i.e., parent report) was applied to this population during a follow-up study perf

Genetic and environmental influences on early speech, language and literacy development.

UNLABELLED: The genetic and environmental etiology of speech and broader language skills was examined in terms of their concurrent relationships in young children; their longitudinal association with reading; and the role they play in defining the 'heritable phenotype' for specific language impairment (SLI). The work was based on a large sample of 4 1/2-year-old twins, who were assessed at home on a broad range of speech and language measures as part of the Twins Early Development Study. We found that genetic factors strongly influence variation in young children's speech in typical developmen

Speech and language development in 41 children with sex chromosome anomalies.

Forty-one children with sex chromosome anomalies identified from the chromosome screening of a newborn population were blindly evaluated by a speech-language pathologist, along with a control group of 31 siblings. 47,XXX girls and 47,XXY boys were found to have increased problems in auditory perception, receptive language, and expressive language; the problems of the 47,XXY boys were less severe than those of the 47,XXX group, and reflected specific deficits in their ability to process linguistic information rather than a deficit in comprehension. An increased occurrence of speech production p

Stimulating language development in the first 1000 days: A scoping review.

Acquiring basic language skills is one of the key developmental milestones a child must reach in its early years. Failing to do so can be a sign of language disorders and can lead to problems in later life that can impede all other domains of child development, including socio-emotional development, cognitive development, and later academic achievement. Since parents play a crucial role in early language development, it is important to support them with best practices and provide them with evidence-informed knowledge on language development of their infant. In this scoping review, we narrative

Development of language composites for enhanced sensitivity to multiple plasma biomarkers.

BACKGROUND: While language deficits are among the earliest detectable signs of Alzheimer`s disease (AD), no existing composites integrate connected speech - essential for capturing real-world communication - limiting precise detection and personalized interventions. METHODS: We analyzed cohort data from 824 non-demented adults and constructed three language composites: a theoretical composite based on expert knowledge, a connected speech-specific composite derived from the theoretical composite, and an empirical language composite optimized for predicting cognitive progression. We compared th

Fetal temporal sulcus depth asymmetry has prognostic value for language development.

In most humans, the superior temporal sulcus (STS) shows a rightward depth asymmetry. This asymmetry can not only be observed in adults, but is already recognizable in the fetal brain. As the STS lies adjacent to brain areas important for language, STS depth asymmetry may represent an anatomical marker for language abilities. This study investigated the prognostic value of STS depth asymmetry in healthy fetuses for later language abilities, language localization, and language-related white matter tracts. Less right lateralization of the fetal STS depth was significantly associated with better

Language development trajectories in young children with developmental disabilities in Taiwan.

BACKGROUND: Language development is critical to various outcomes in young children with developmental disabilities (DD), including autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and non-ASD delays. However, language development trajectories in young children with DD in non-Western populations remain unclear. AIMS: To investigate the language development trajectories of young children with DD in Taiwan. We investigated the relationship between trajectory class assignment and diagnostic outcomes (ASD or non-ASD delays) at 3 years after enrollment in the study and the differences in early abilities among childr

Neurologic Characterization of Craniosynostosis: Can Direct Brain Recordings Predict Language Development?

PURPOSE: Nonsyndromic craniosynostosis (NSC) is associated with language deficits. Conventional tests, such as the Bayley Scales of Infant Development (BSID), may not reflect accurate long-term cognition. Alternatively, mismatch negativity (MMN) waves recorded via electroencephalogram (EEG) measure neural responses to speech and may objectively predict language development. This study aimed to (1) correlate infant MMN to future language achievement and (2) compare MMN among subtypes of NSC. METHODS: Pre and postoperatively (mean operative age 9.5 months), NSC participants received the BSID an

Speech and language development of children born following assisted reproductive technologies.

OBJECTIVES: Studies which targeted communication skills of children born following assisted reproductive technologies have reported contradictory results. Concerning the increasing rates of children born in these technologies and the importance of some factors as risk factors like birth weight, gestational age, and the number of children per birth in these procedures, studying speech and language skills is critical. So, the current study aimed to investigate the speech and language capabilities of Persian speaking children born following these procedures. METHODS: A descriptive and cross-sect
