The larynx has three functions: phonation, airway protection, and respiration. Few studies have dealt with laryngeal respiratory function. To elucidate respiratory regulation by the larynx, we studied the changes in the activity of the intrinsic laryngeal muscles during hypercapnia in decerebrated cats. The electromyographic activities of the posterior cricoarytenoid (PCA) and thyroarytenoid (TA) muscles were recorded simultaneously with an electromyogram of the diaphragm, endotracheal pressure, and concentrations of O2 and CO2. The activity of the intrinsic laryngeal muscles during hypercapni

The authors describe the clinical presentations of post-polio laryngeal muscle weakness in three patients with prior polio infection who presented with new complaints including slowly progressive dyspnea, dysphagia, and/or hoarseness. Evaluations by laryngeal videostroboscopy and electromyography revealed vocal cord abductor and/or adductor weakness, recurrent posterior glottic web in one case, and, in the two patients who agreed to electromyography, evidence of prior denervation and reinnervation in laryngeal muscles. Treatment was directed at attempting to maintain an airway and optimize voc

EMG activity from four intrinsic laryngeal muscles (thyroarytenoid, posterior cricoarytenoid, interarytenoid, and cricothyroid) was obtained from one female spastic dysphonia patient while she performed a variety of speech and nonspeech tasks. These tasks were performed before and during a period of temporary unilateral laryngeal muscle paralysis. In the nonparalyzed condition, adductory muscle activity showed intermittent sudden increases that coincided with momentary voice arrests. These muscle patterns and accompanying voice interruptions were not present either when speech was produced in

Medullar localization of laryngeal motoneurons has been studied in rat using horseradish peroxidase (HRP) as a retrograde tracer. After enzyme injection in laryngeal muscles labelled neurons were found in the nucleus ambiguus (NA) from 0.5 mm caudal to 1.5 mm rostral to the obex. The presence of labelled cells in both NA after sectioning of left recurrent laryngeal nerve showed the existence of a contralateral projection from NA motoneurons. HRP labelled cells were spindle-shaped and multipolar, NA laryngeal motoneurons were located in a well defined columnar arrangement parallel to the middle

OBJECTIVE: To verify the immediate effects of voiced gargling on the electrical activity of extrinsic laryngeal muscles and vocal self-assessment.
METHODS: A sample of 20 individuals of both sexes, mean age of 31.95 (±11.57) years, were equally divided in two groups according to the presence or absence of vocal complaint. Both groups were evaluated by surface electromyography of the suprahyoid (SH) and infrahyoid (IH) muscle areas during rest, phonation of the sustained vowel [Ɛ] in habitual and strong intensities; phonation of rising and falling glissando; and counting from 1 to 10. The establishment of a single validated endoscopic laryngeal grading system for assessing recurrent laryngeal neuropathy (RLN) is desirable to facilitate direct comparisons between the findings of different clinical and research groups worldwide. The objective of this study was to assess the relationship between the Havemeyer endoscopic laryngeal grading system and histopathological changes consistent with RLN in the left cricoarytenoideus dorsalis (CAD) muscle of horses of different breeds with a full range of clinical severities of RLN, i.e., from normal endoscopic laryngeal function to comp

We studied myosin heavy chain (MyHC) expression and fiber type distribution in laryngeal muscles in the rabbit, cat, and baboon using immunohistochemistry with highly MyHC-specific antibodies. Two types of variation in MyHC expression were found: between muscles of different function within species and within specific muscles between species. Within species, thyroarytenoid (Ta), an adductor, had faster MyHCs and fiber type profiles than the abductor, posterior cricoarytenoid (PCA), which expressed faster MyHCs than the vocal fold tensor, cricothyroid (CT). Between species, laryngeal muscles ge

Intrinsic laryngeal muscles share many anatomical and physiological properties with extraocular muscles, which are unaffected in both Duchenne muscular dystrophy and mdx mice. We hypothesized that intrinsic laryngeal muscles are spared from myonecrosis in mdx mice and may serve as an additional tool to understand the mechanisms of muscle sparing in dystrophinopathy. Intrinsic laryngeal muscles and tibialis anterior (TA) muscle of adult and aged mdx and control C57Bl/10 mice were investigated. The percentage of central nucleated fibers, as a sign of muscle fibers that had undergone injury and r

Our purpose was to assess the use of magnetic stimulation for measuring conduction time of the recurrent and superior laryngeal nerves In 10 normal volunteers (7 male, 3 female). Subjects underwent laryngeal electromyography and magnetic stimulation of the vagus nerve bilaterally at the mastoid tip with a figure 8 coil. Mean muscle response latencies were measured and examined for consistent differences. Thyroarytenoid muscle response latencies were consistently longer than those in the cricothyroid muscle. Left thyroarytenoid muscle latencies were consistently longer than those on the right i

BACKGROUND: In clinical practice and research relating to Muscle Tension Dysphonia (MTD), several laryngeal muscle tension measurement methods are used to diagnose, to identify specific muscle strengths and deficits, and to measure therapeutic outcomes. The variety and reliability of available measurement methods presents challenges within diagnosis and treatment. The lack of methodical standardization presents a barrier to homogeneous practice in this area. There is a need for a comprehensive scoping review of laryngeal muscle tension measurement methods.
STUDY DESIGN: Scoping review.

OBJECTIVES: It has been assumed that patients with primary muscle tension dysphonia (pMTD) have more extrinsic laryngeal muscle (ELM) tension, but tools to study this phenomenon lack. Shear wave elastography (SWE) is a potential method to address these shortcomings. The objectives of this study were to apply SWE to the ELMs, compare SWE measures to standard clinical metrics, and determine group differences in pMTD and typical voice users before and after vocal load.
METHODS: SWE measurements of the ELMs from ultrasound examinations of the anterior neck, supraglottic compression severities fro

The interactions of the intrinsic laryngeal muscles (ILMs) in controlling fundamental frequency (F0) and glottal posture remain unclear. In an in vivo canine model, three sets of intrinsic laryngeal muscles-the thyroarytenoid (TA), cricothyroid (CT), and lateral cricoarytenoid plus interarytenoid (LCA/IA) muscle complex-were independently and accurately stimulated in a graded manner using distal laryngeal nerve stimulation. Graded neuromuscular stimulation was used to independently activate these paired intrinsic laryngeal muscles over a range from threshold to maximal activation, to produce 3

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to identify neurophysiologic markers generated by primary motor and premotor cortex for laryngeal muscles, recorded from laryngeal muscle.
METHODS: Ten right-handed healthy subjects underwent navigated transcranial magnetic stimulation (nTMS) and 18 patients underwent direct cortical stimulation (DCS) over the left hemisphere, while recording neurophysiologic markers, short latency response (SLR) and long latency response (LLR) from cricothyroid muscle. Both healthy subjects and patients were engaged in the visual object-naming task. In healthy subjects, t

This report analyzes the experience gained using two different techniques to reinnervate the paralyzed vocal cord. In the neurotization group, the superior laryngeal nerve (SLN) motor branch-cricothyroid muscle pedicle was used to reinnervate the posterior cricoarytenoid muscle. In the direct nerve anastomosis group, the SLN was anastomosed to the abductor branch of the recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN), and the ansa hypoglossi (AH) to the adductor branch of the RLN. A third group of animals (control) had the right RLN sectioned without any anastomosis. About 5 to 6 months postoperatively the an

Poor laryngeal muscle coordination that results in abnormal glottal posturing is believed to be a primary etiologic factor in common voice disorders such as non-phonotraumatic vocal hyperfunction. Abnormal activity of antagonistic laryngeal muscles is hypothesized to play a key role in the alteration of normal vocal fold biomechanics that results in the dysphonia associated with such disorders. Current low-order models of the vocal folds are unsatisfactory to test this hypothesis since they do not capture the co-contraction of antagonist laryngeal muscle pairs. To address this limitation, a se

AIM: The aim of this study was to develop and test a surface electromyography (sEMG) assessment protocol to characterise the activity of the extrinsic laryngeal muscles (suprahyoid and infrahyoid) during phonatory tasks and vocal techniques.
METHODOLOGY: The protocol of assessment was based on electromyographic assessment guidelines and on clinical voice evaluation needs and was tested in six healthy adults with no vocal disorders. Surface electromyographic activity of suprahyoid and infrahyoid muscles was acquired during different reference tasks (rest, reading, maximum contractions) and six

Challenges related to high-quality RNA extraction from post-mortem tissue have limited RNA-sequencing (RNA-seq) application in certain skeletal muscle groups, including the intrinsic laryngeal muscles (ILMs). The present study identified critical factors contributing to substandard RNA extraction from the ILMs and established a suitable method that permitted high-throughput analysis. Here, standard techniques for tissue processing were adapted, and an effective means to control confounding effects during specimen preparation was determined. The experimental procedure consistently provided suff
