A latent class analysis to empirically describe eating disorders through developmental stages.

OBJECTIVES: The current standards for classifying eating disorders were primarily informed by adult, clinical study populations, while it is unknown whether an empirically based classification system can be supported across preadolescence through young adulthood. Using latent class analyses, we sought to empirically classify disordered eating in females from preadolescence to young adulthood, and assess the association between classes and adverse outcomes. METHOD: Latent class models were fit using observations from the 9,039 girls participating in the growing up today study, an on-going coho

Patterns of brucellosis infection symptoms in azerbaijan: a latent class cluster analysis.

Brucellosis infection is a multisystem disease, with a broad spectrum of symptoms. We investigated the existence of clusters of infected patients according to their clinical presentation. Using national surveillance data from the Electronic-Integrated Disease Surveillance System, we applied a latent class cluster (LCC) analysis on symptoms to determine clusters of brucellosis cases. A total of 454 cases reported between July 2011 and July 2013 were analyzed. LCC identified a two-cluster model and the Vuong-Lo-Mendell-Rubin likelihood ratio supported the cluster model. Brucellosis cases in the

Certain subphenotypes of aspirin-exacerbated respiratory disease distinguished by latent class analysis.

BACKGROUND: Aspirin-exacerbated respiratory disease (AERD) is recognized as a distinct asthma phenotype. It usually has a severe course accompanied by chronic hyperplastic eosinophilic sinusitis with nasal polyps, blood eosinophilia, and increased concentrations of urinary leukotriene E4 (LTE4). More insightful analysis of individual patients shows this group to be nonhomogeneous. OBJECTIVE: We sought to identify any likely subphenotypes in a cohort of patients with AERD through the application of latent class analysis (LCA). METHODS: Clinical data from 201 patients with AERD (134 women) wer

Traumatic brain injury and PTSD screening efforts evaluated using latent class analysis.

OBJECTIVE: To empirically identify latent classes of service members according to persistent postconcussive symptom patterns and to characterize the identified classes relative to other postdeployment variables including posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and mild traumatic brain injury (TBI) screening results. Such comparisons may directly inform policy regarding these routine assessments and translate to improved treatment decisions. METHOD: Self-report data were obtained for 12,581 combat-exposed male U.S. Navy and Marine Corps personnel who returned from deployment in 2008-2009 and comp

Predicting medical student performance from attributes at entry: a latent class analysis.

OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this study were two-fold. Firstly, we aimed to model 'typologies' of student examination performance by grouping students into like categories based on measures of prior academic achievement (particularly in the science subjects) and interview rating at time of entry to a medical degree course, and outcome measures of subsequent performance across the course. Secondly, we aimed to illustrate and evidence the utility of the latent class analysis (LCA) clustering technique to provide meaningful information on the effectiveness of a student selection process with res

Youth self-report of physical and sexual abuse: a latent class analysis.

OBJECTIVE: To determine if meaningful groups of at-risk pre-adolescent youth could be identified based on their self-report of physical and sexual abuse histories. METHODS: Youth participating in a consortium of ongoing longitudinal studies were interviewed using an audio-computer assisted self-interview (A-CASI) when they were approximately 12 years of age to obtain information about their perceived experiences of physical (18 items) and sexual (12 items) abuse. In addition, Child Protective Service records were reviewed and the taxonomy developed for defining maltreatment characteristics (B

Using latent class analysis to identify aggressors and victims of peer harassment.

This study used latent class analysis (LCA) to identify and classify individuals into aggressor and victim latent classes. Participants were over 2,000 sixth grade students who completed peer nomination procedures that identified students who had reputations as perpetrators and/or victims of physical, verbal, or relational harassment. Results showed five latent classes. Consistent with previous research, LCA identified latent classes of victims, aggressors, and socially adjusted students. However, rather than a single aggressive-victim subgroup, LCA identified latent classes of highly-victimiz

Clinical assessment of infection in nonhealing ulcers analyzed by latent class analysis.

The distinction between bacterial colonization and infection relies on clinical judgement. Determining sensitivity and specificity of this judgement are problematic as no gold standard exists. Six specialists in wound management independently assessed 120 nonhealing chronic wounds. Sixty-five (54.2%) patients had venous ulcer, 18 (15%) arterial ulcers, 15 (12.5%) ulcerative pyoderma gangraenosum, 12 (10%) neuropathic or pressure ulcers, six (5%) vasculitis ulcers, and four patients had ulcers caused by a primary or metastatic cancer disease. Unrestricted latent class analysis was used for dete

Latent class analysis of symptoms associated with chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia.

BACKGROUND: Chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia continue to be perplexing conditions of unknown validity. Aetiological and symptomatic heterogeneity is likely and the distinctiveness of these disorders remains unclear. Our aims were to investigate empirically symptomatic heterogeneity in chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia. METHODS: Latent class analysis was applied to data from 646 patients who met accepted criteria for chronic fatigue syndrome and/or fibromyalgia who were systematically evaluated at a specialist fatigue clinic. Thirty-two symptoms commonly found in chronic fatig

Latent class analysis-based prognostic classification in laryngeal carcinoma: beyond TNM staging.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study is to identify latent clinical-biological profiles using latent class analysis (LCA) and to compare their prognostic capacity with that of the TNM system. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective study of 489 patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx (2000-2020). LCA was performed using eight indicator variables: age, sex, toxic consumption, sub-location, T category, N category, Karnofsky index, and host index. TNM staging was grouped into three categories (stages I-II, III, and IV) as no survival differences were observed between stages I and II (p

Exploring Response Patterns to Motivational Messages Supporting Physical Activity: Latent Class Analysis.

BACKGROUND: In mobile health care, text messages play an important role in improving physical activity. Recent studies have developed message banks based on theories, including the behavior change technique (BCT) taxonomy. However, little evidence is available for individual differences (ie, who responds to which BCTs presented in messages), which is crucial for optimizing message delivery. OBJECTIVE: We investigated how individuals perceive messages supporting physical activity and what clusters of individuals are identified by their responses. METHODS: Japanese-speaking adults (n=2859; mea

Early CRPS Is a Heterogeneous Condition: Results From a Latent Class Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is a debilitating condition characterised by significant heterogeneity. Early diagnosis is critical, but limited data exists on the condition's early stages. This study aimed to characterise (very) early CRPS patients and explore potential subgroups to enhance understanding of its mechanisms. METHODS: A total of 113 early CRPS patients were recruited, with 89 undergoing physical assessments. Data included demographic information, work-related factors, CRPS history and clinical features, body perception disturbances, quantitative sensory testin

Maternal Incarceration and Health Risk Behaviors Among Adolescents: A Latent Class Analysis.

Most studies on the impact of maternal incarceration on adolescent health risk behaviors have focused on singular, separated behaviors, even though these behaviors often cluster and co-occur. This study used the FFCWS dataset to examine the association between maternal incarceration and the aggregation of health risk behaviors among adolescents. Latent class analysis suggested the four-class model had the optimal model fit. Multinomial logistic regression revealed that the odds of adolescents with maternal incarceration histories being classified into the "high dietary risk behavior," "high in

Phenotypic Classification of Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children Using Latent Class Analysis.

IMPORTANCE: Multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) is an uncommon but severe hyperinflammatory illness that occurs 2 to 6 weeks after SARS-CoV-2 infection. Presentation overlaps with other conditions, and risk factors for severity differ by patient. Characterizing patterns of MIS-C presentation can guide efforts to reduce misclassification, categorize phenotypes, and identify patients at risk for severe outcomes. OBJECTIVE: To characterize phenotypic clusters of MIS-C and identify clusters with increased clinical severity. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: In this cohort stud

Patterns of polysubstance use among adults in Malaysia-A latent class analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Polysubstance use is the use of more than one non-prescribed licit or illicit substance at one time. This is a common phenomenon, but little is known about the severity and the various substances used by adults in Malaysia. OBJECTIVE: To determine the pattern of polysubstance use and its associated factors among general adults in Malaysia. METHODOLOGY: This was a secondary data analysis from the National Health and Morbidity Survey (NHMS) 2019), a cross-sectional population survey with a two-stage stratified random sampling design. A total of 10,472 Malaysians aged 18 years and

Early-onset restrictive food intake disorders in children: a latent class analysis.

The two most frequent early-onset restrictive food intake disorders are early-onset anorexia nervosa (EOAN) and avoidant/restrictive food intake disorders (ARFID). Although the core symptoms of EOAN (i.e., fear of gaining weight and disturbed body image) are not present in ARFID, these symptoms are difficult to assess during the initial phase of hospitalisation. Our aim was  to identify restrictive food intake disorder subtypes in children using latent class analysis (LCA) based on the information available at admission to hospital, and to determine the agreement between the subtypes identifie

Bronchial Remodeling-based Latent Class Analysis Predicts Exacerbations in Severe Preschool Wheezers.

Rationale: Children with preschool wheezing represent a very heterogeneous population with wide variability regarding their clinical, inflammatory, obstructive, and/or remodeling patterns. We hypothesized that assessing bronchial remodeling would help clinicians to better characterize severe preschool wheezers. Objectives: The main objective was to identify bronchial remodeling-based latent classes of severe preschool wheezers. Secondary objectives were to compare cross-sectional and longitudinal clinical and biological data between classes and to assess the safety of bronchoscopy. Methods: Th

Comorbidity patterns, family history and breast cancer risk: a latent class analysis.

BACKGROUND: Limited evidence exists on how the presence of multiple conditions affects breast cancer (BC) risk. METHODS: We used data from a network hospital-based case-control study conducted in Italy and Switzerland, including 3034 BC cases and 3392 controls. Comorbidity patterns were identified using latent class analysis on a set of specific health conditions/diseases. A multiple logistic regression model was used to derive ORs and the corresponding 95% CIs for BC according to the patterns, adjusting for several covariates. A second model was fitted including an additional effect of FH on

Profiles of subjective health among people living alone: a latent class analysis.

BACKGROUND: Living alone has increased globally and especially in Finland where 45% of all households are single occupancy. Epidemiological research has found that living alone a risk factor for a wide range of adversities related to quality of life but the rapidly-changing demographics of people living alone calls for a more detailed investigation of their subjective health status. METHODS: Using a cross-sectional survey sent for a random sample of Finnish residents in single-person households (n = 884), we explored with latent class analysis whether the respondents form different health pro

Latent class analysis of bipolar disorder symptoms and suicidal ideation and behaviors.

UNLABELLED: Individuals with bipolar disorder are at increased risk of dying by suicide compared to healthy controls and those with unipolar depression. Previous studies show that depressive symptoms and mixed episodes of mania and depression are related to suicide. However, most of these studies adopt a variable-centered approach to understanding how specific symptoms relate to suicidal ideation, without addressing how these symptoms and symptom profiles relate to suicidal behaviors. OBJECTIVES: Using latent class analysis, this study adopts a person-centered approach to examine whether subt
