Corticospinal excitability during laughter: implications for cataplexy and the comparison with REM sleep atonia.

Cataplexy is usually seen as rapid eye movement (REM) sleep atonia occurring at an inopportune moment. REM sleep atonia is the result of postsynaptic inhibition, i.e. inhibition of alpha motor neurones. Although this may explain the suppression of H-reflexes during REM sleep, cataplexy and laughter, it is not the only explanation. Presynaptic inhibition, in which afferent impulses are prevented from reaching motor neurones, is an alternative. Testing H-reflexes and magnetic-evoked potentials (MEPs) helps to tell them apart: in postsynaptic inhibition MEPs and H-reflexes change in tandem, while

Not all laughs are alike: voiced but not unvoiced laughter readily elicits positive affect.

We tested whether listeners are differentially responsive to the presence or absence of voicing, a salient, distinguishing acoustic feature, in laughter. Each of 128 participants rated 50 voiced and 20 unvoiced laughs twice according to one of five different rating strategies. Results were highly consistent regardless of whether participants rated their own emotional responses, likely responses of other people, or one of three perceived attributes concerning the laughers, thus indicating that participants were experiencing similarly differentiated affective responses in all these cases. Laughter in a psychiatric ward. Somatic, emotional, social, and clinical influences on schizophrenic patients.

The study was designed to explore the potential therapeutic effects of humor on hospitalized schizophrenics. For this purpose, in the first stage, we conducted a review of findings in regard to physical health, emotions, psychiatric state, and social behavior. In the second stage, we carried out an experiment with 34 resident patients in two chronic schizophrenic wards who were exposed to 70 movies during 3 months. The experimental group was exposed to humorous movies only, and the control group to different kinds of movies. Before and after the exposure to films for 3 months, both groups were

[A case of behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia presenting with frequent laughter during conversations].

We describe a case of behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD) presenting with frequent laughter during conversations. A 72-year-old male patient visited our hospital because of aspontaneity and abnormal behaviors. His medical history revealed epilepsy attacks approximately five years prior, which improved following administration of antiepileptic drugs. At the age of 67 years, the patient began exhibiting aspontaneity and abnormal behaviors, such as leaving a teahouse without paying for his coffee. Neurological examinations indicated moderate dementia and bradykinesia while walking.

Transient mutism, pathological laughter and cerebellar ataxia after primary varicella-zoster virus infection.

Acute postinfectious cerebellitis is characterised by inflammatory involvement of the cerebellum and consequent cerebellar dysfunction, usually presenting a benign and self-limited course. Common symptoms described in the literature include ataxia, peripheral facial paralysis, aphasia, spinal dysfunction and eventually hydrocephalus. We describe a rare presentation of acute cerebellitis after varicella, in a 6-year-old child, who presented with ataxia, dysmetria, mutism and pathological laughter.

The elevation of natural killer cell activity induced by laughter in a crossover designed study.

The elevation of natural killer cell activity (NKCA) by laughter was not confirmed due to incomplete methodology of previous studies although positive emotion is believed to be favorable for health. To verify NKCA elevation by laughter in a crossover design, we measured NKCA before and after watching films, presenting 75-min comic film and non-emotional control film at different days to the same 21 healthy male subjects. Electromyogram of left major zygomatic muscle was obtained during the films to quantify the magnitude of laughter as an index of emotional expression. As indices of emotional

Gelastic dysarthria: Speech-triggered pathological laughter with evidence for a selective pontine gating mechanism.

We report a highly selective manifestation of pathological laughter in which speech initiation consistently triggers laughter, resulting in disrupted articulation. A 55-year-old male with bilateral pontine infarction exhibited laughter that was time-locked to speech, most prominent during speech production and absent during non-speech tasks. Functional MRI during speech demonstrated activation of language regions, medial prefrontal cortex, amygdala, and ventral pons, with concurrent subjective laughter. We propose that ventral pontine lesions disrupt inhibitory pathways, leading to disinhibiti

Ictal laughter induced by repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation in stroke patients: a case series.

BACKGROUND: Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) is a well-established neuromodulation technique for post-stroke motor rehabilitation with a favorable safety profile. However, its safety in patients with acute/subacute cerebral infarction remains incompletely characterized, particularly regarding unusual behavioral responses. Gelastic seizures, characterized by stereotyped, inappropriate laughter without a corresponding emotional trigger, are a rare form of focal epilepsy typically associated with hypothalamic hamartomas or other structural brain lesions. Their induction by rTMS

Pathological laughter as prodromal manifestation of transient ischemic attacks--case report and brief review.

BACKGROUND: Based on a case report, the authors reviewed the data about involuntary emotional expression disorder (IEED). IEED includes the syndromes of pathological laughing and crying (PLC) and emotional lability (EL). PLC is a rare disorder of emotional expression characterized by relatively uncontrollable episodes of laughter and crying or both that do not have an apparent motivating stimulus. CASE PRESENTATION: Authors report the case of a 59-year-old man who presented with recurrent episodes of PLC of approximately 2 min duration, consisting of accelerated breathing, emission of guttura

Laughing Alone and Punching Self: The Alignment of Laughter in Interviews With Men Convicted of Sexual Offences.

Laughter plays a significant role in narrative storytelling but the extent to which it appears (and is useful) during interviews with justice-involved populations is not well understood. The psychological value of "gallows" humor is well established in the buffering of work stress for first responders and emergency personnel, but criminologists are yet to fully explore the presence, or the benefit (if any) of laughter during field interviews. This paper analysed the occurrences of laughter in interviews with North American men incarcerated for sexual violence. We present a preliminary descript

Effect of laughter yoga on anxiety and depression in people with Parkinson's disease: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: The large number of people with Parkinson’s disease (PD) with anxiety or depression in China is a cause of concern. Sustained aerobic exercise is a promising therapy for delaying motor disabilities in people with PD. Laughter yoga is an aerobic training program that has proven to be beneficial in affecting the mental and physical aspects of healthy individuals, but its effect on anxiety and depression in people with PD has not been studied in controlled trials. The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of laughter yoga on anxiety, depression, sleep quality, and quality

Laughter is the best medicine: A novel finding in the treatment of supraventricular tachycardia in a paediatric emergency patient.

We present a novel case of laughter induction that was noted to terminate an episode of supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) in a 10 year old girl who presented to a large metropolitan emergency department. In the initial management of this patient's SVT, traditional vagal maneuvers (including the valsalva maneuver and stimulation of the mammalian divers reflex) were attempted unsuccessfully. While awaiting further treatment, nursing staff presented the patient with an inflated examination glove that had been crafted into the shape of an elephant. This resulted in a fit of laughter that appeared

Fits of laughter (gelastic epilepsy) with a tumour of the floor of the third ventricle. A video tape analysis.

A patient with fits of laughter due to a tumorous alteration (hyperplasia) of the floor of the third ventricle is described with electroencephalographic findings indicative of focal epilepsy (complex partial seizures = psychomotor fits). The laughter is interpreted as an inborn emotional expression with structural substrate in the hypothalamus and neighboring brain. With structures remaining intact functional disorders in this area can cause epileptic phenomena with participation of the limbic system.

Laughter in everyday life: an event-based experience sampling method study using wrist-worn wearables.

Laughter is a universal, nonverbal vocal expression of broad significance for humans. Interestingly, rather little is known about how often we laugh and how laughter is associated with our personality. In a large, event-based, experience sampling method study (N = 52; k = 9,261 assessments) using wrist-worn wearables and a physical analogue scale, we analyzed belly laughs and fit of laughter events in participants' everyday life for 4 weeks. Additionally, we assessed associations with laughter frequency such as personality, happiness, life satisfaction, gelotophobia (i.e., fear of being laughe
