Cinnamomum cassia (cassia) is a tropical aromatic evergreen tree of the Lauraceae family well known for its fragrance and spicy flavor and widely used in Asian traditional medicine. It has recently garnered attention for its diverse potential health benefits, including anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, and anti-diabetic properties. However, the gastroprotective effect of C. cassia, particularly against ethanol-induced gastric damage, remains unclear. We investigated the potential gastroprotective property of C. cassia and the underlying mechanisms of action in a rat model of ethanol-induced gast

Mosquitoes are important vectors responsible for spreading a number of diseases affecting both humans and animals. Many diseases as dengue, chikungunya, yellow fever, malaria, filariasis and Japanese encephalitis are spread by mosquitoes. There are many reports of plant extracts and their active constituents showing anti-mosquito activities as larvicidal, pupicidal, ovicidal and adulticidal activities. Persea americana Mill. (Lauraceae), known as avocado, has been reported to show many pharmacological and antimicrobial activities. In this communication, the mosquito larvicidal activities of th

BACKGROUND: Opportunistic fungal infections are increasingly common, with Candida albicans being the most common etiological agent; however, in recent years, episodes of candidiasis caused by non-albicans Candida species have emerged. Plants belonging to the Lauraceae family have shown remarkable antifungal effects. This study assessed the anti-Candida activity of Ocotea glomerata extracts and fractions, time of death and the synergistic effects with conventional antifungals. The possible mechanism of action was also addressed.
METHODS: Minimal inhibitory concentrations (MIC) were determined

Cancer is a major global health challenge, being the second leading cause of morbidity and mortality after cardiovascular disease. The growing economic burden and profound psychosocial impact on patients and their families make it urgent to find innovative and effective anticancer solutions. For this reason, interest in using natural compounds to develop new cancer treatments has grown. In this respect, antofine, an alkaloid class found in Apocynaceae, Lauraceae, and Moraceae family plants, exhibits promising biological properties, including anti-inflammatory, anticancer, antiviral, and antifu

Schistosomiasis, caused by helminth flatworms of the genus Schistosoma, is one of the most important parasitic diseases in the world, affecting over 200 million people in developing countries. Riparins are natural alkamides found in Aniba riparia (Lauraceae) fruits that possess several pharmacological properties. In this study, we reported the synthesis, characterization and structural analysis of six riparin derivatives (A-F), as well as their schistosomicidal activity against S. mansoni worms together with a biological, pharmacokinetic and toxicological in silico evaluation. Firstly, these c

Benzylisoquinoline alkaloids (BIAs) consist of more than 2500 diverse structures largely restricted to the order Ranunculales and the eumagnoliids. However, BIAs also occur in the Rutaceae, Lauraceae, Cornaceae and Nelumbonaceae, and sporadically throughout the order Piperales. Several of these alkaloids function in the defense of plants against herbivores and pathogens - thus, the capacity for BIA biosynthesis is expected to play an important role in the reproductive fitness of certain plants. Biochemical and molecular phylogenetic approaches were used to investigate the evolution of BIA bios

Cassytha filiformis (Lauraceae), a widely distributed parasitic plant, contains several aporphine alkaloids and is often used in African folk medicine to treat cancer, African trypanosomiasis and other diseases. In a previous investigation, we showed that the alkaloid plant extract and the isolated aporphines possessed in vitro cytotoxic properties. In this paper, we evaluated the in vitro activity of the alkaloid extract (IC50 = 2.2 microg/mL) and its three major aporphine alkaloids (actinodaphnine, cassythine, and dicentrine) on Trypanosoma brucei brucei as well as four related commercially

The non-native redbay ambrosia beetle, Xyleborus glabratus Eichhoff (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae), has recently emerged as a significant pest of southeastern U.S. coastal forests. Specifically, a fungal symbiont (Raffaelea sp.) of X. glabratus has caused mortality of redbay (Persea borbonia) and sassafras (Sassafras albidum) trees in the region; several other Lauraceae species also seem susceptible. Although the range of X. glabratus continues to expand rapidly, little is known about the species' biology and behavior. In turn, there has been no broad-scale assessment of the threat it

Ocotea odorifera (Vell.) Rohwer (Lauraceae), commonly known as canela-sassafrás, is a tree species native to the Atlantic Forest and valued for its essential oils used in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and bioinsecticides. Developing an efficient mini-cutting protocol is fundamental for conservation efforts, as it provides a viable alternative for producing seedlings of this threatened species. This study evaluated the rooting of mini-cuttings collected during the four seasons of 2023 and treated with five concentrations of indole-3-butyric acid (IBA), and investigated anatomical features associa

In recent years, there has been a significant increase in the search for new therapeutic strategies for the treatment of inflammatory diseases. In this sense, natural products emerge as a potential source for the discovery of new drugs, with the research of the pharmacological properties of these products being very important. In addition to its function in plants (insect attraction and repellency), essential oils present pharmacological effects, such as antibacterial, antifungal, antimutagenic, antiviral, antiprotozoal, antioxidant, antidiabetic and anti-inflammatory properties. In this revie

This review focused on the toxicity of essential oils and their constituents against Aedes aegypti L. (Diptera, Culicidae) larvae, a key vector of important arboviral diseases, such as dengue, chikungunya, zika, and yellow fever. This review is based on original articles obtained by searching major databases in the last six years. Our literature review shows that 337 essential oils from 225 plant species have been tested for larvicidal bioactivity. More than 60% of these essential oils were considered active (LC50<100 µg/mL). Most species belong to the families Lamiaceae (19.3%), Lauraceae (9.

Litsea cubeba is an evergreen tree from the Lauraceae family, with the common name of mountain pepper in Taiwan. The extracts from different parts such as the bark, leaf, root and fruit have various medicinal properties and have been extensively used in traditional Chinese medicine. SnO2 nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized using an extract of Litsea cubeba fruit based on response surface methodology (RSM). The phytochemicals present in the extract of Litsea cubeba fruit played a crucial role in the NP formation, which could be confirmed by Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectrometer (FTIR). Analy
