The study evaluated the potential of Thymus mastichina, Lavandula luisiery, and Origanum virens hydrolates-essential oil-rich species found in the Dehesa ecosystem-as natural agents for pork preservation through marination. Hydrolates, the main by-products of essential oil distillation, were characterized by their volatile composition, total phenolic content, antioxidant capacity, and antimicrobial activity against Escherichia coli and Listeria innocua. Pork fillets were marinated (24 h) with increasing hydrolate concentrations (1:1, 1:1.5, 1:2 w/w) and then stored for eight days under refrige

Lamiaceae and Asteraceae plant species have been widely used in Mediterranean ethnomedicine for gastrointestinal disorders. They are also known for their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial, anti-parasite, and anti-virus properties. Giardia duodenalis is the most prevalent intestinal protozoon in children and young dogs worldwide. Its zoonotic potential and frequent therapeutic failures with nitroimidazoles underscore the urgent need for alternative treatments. This study investigated the antigiardial activity of essential oils (EOs) from 22 medicinal plants belonging to Lamiaceae a

Lavandula species are rich in bioactive compounds, among which rosmarinic acid (RA) is a major phenolic known for potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities. In this study, Lavandin (Lavandula × intermedia), a sterile hybrid widely cultivated for essential oil production, was used to develop RA-enriched cell extracts through plant cell culture technology combined with methyl jasmonate (MJ) elicitation. Lavandin cell suspension cultures accumulated higher levels of RA compared to those of L. angustifolia, and MJ treatment further enhanced RA biosynthesis, as confirmed by the upregulati

Avian nests often contain aromatic plant fragments, which has led to propose among others that they repel ectoparasites or vectors of blood parasites (‘nest protection hypothesis’). To date, the relationship between secondary plant provisioning and the parent's blood parasites remains unexplored. We investigated whether the presence of secondary plants in nests during different reproductive stages (before incubation, during incubation and nestling period) was associated with the presence of nest-dwelling ectoparasites and females’ blood-parasite infections in blue tits (Cyanistes caeruleus) du

Aiming for discovering effective and harmless antitrypanosomal agents, 17 essential oils and nine major components were screened for their effects on T. b. brucei. The essential oils were obtained by hydrodistillation from fresh plant material and analyzed by GC and GC-MS. The trypanocidal activity was assessed using blood stream trypomastigotes cultures of T. b. brucei and the colorimetric resazurin method. The MTT test was used to assess the cytotoxicity of essential oils on macrophage cells and Selectivity Indexes were calculated. Of the 17 essential oils screened three showed high trypanoc

Skin cancer, including melanoma and non-melanoma cancers (basal and squamous cell carcinomas), is the most common type of cancer. UV radiation, family history, and genetic predisposition are the main risk factors. Although surgical excision is the standard treatment, essential oils are attracting growing interest for their anti-cancer effects. This study tested the effects of Juniperus excelsa M. Bieb. (Cupressaceae), Lavandula vera DC. (Lamiaceae), and Salvia fruticosa (Mill). (Lamiaceae) essential oils extracted from Middle Eastern medicinal plants on HaCaT (normal), A5 (benign), and II4 (lo

Medicinal plants and their secondary metabolites have long been a rich source of biologically active compounds that can prevent many diseases. In this context, we investigated the antioxidant activities of the essential oil of Lavandula officinalis and tested its potency against hepatic and renal toxicity induced by hydrogen peroxide in adult male mice based on measurements of biochemical parameters, oxidative stress, and tissue damage in both organs. We proved a remarkable antioxidant power of this plant (in vitro) by correcting the harmful effects of the prooxidant (in vivo). It can be concl

BACKGROUND: Seed priming with natural compounds has emerged as a promising strategy to enhance plant tolerance to abiotic stresses. Among these, essential oils may mitigate the adverse effects of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) and salinity on seed germination and early growth. This study aimed to investigate the priming effects of Lavandula angustifolia Mill. essential oil on germination and seedling development of 3 Mediterranean aromatic species: Achillea millefolium L., Ocimum basilicum L., and Thymus vulgaris L.
METHODS: Priming treatments were performed using different essential oil c
