Hebb repetition learning in adolescents with intellectual disabilities.

BACKGROUND: Hebb repetition learning is a form of long-term serial order learning that can occur when sequences of items in an immediate serial recall task are repeated. Repetition improves performance because of the gradual integration of serial order information from short-term memory into a more stable long-term memory trace. AIMS: The current study assessed whether adolescents with non-specific intellectual disabilities showed Hebb repetition effects, and if their magnitude was equivalent to those of children with typical development, matched for mental age. METHODS: Two immediate serial

Planning surgery for young people with learning disabilities.

Surgery for spinal deformity is complex and preparation involves a wide multidisciplinary team. For young people with learning disabilities, especially those who have behaviour that challenges, there are further considerations to ensure that their hospital stay is a positive experience and all their additional needs are met. Staff and carers need to be well informed and there must be effective communication. Evaluation of one patient's journey through pre-assessment, surgery and rehabilitation has identified the need for more input from learning disability liaison nurses in acute children's se

Understanding the Learning Disabilities Linked to Sagittal Craniosynostosis.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to investigate further findings that corroborate similarities between corrected sagittal craniosynostosis and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The aim is to further characterize the neurocognitive deficits seen in adolescents with corrected craniosynostosis by comparing it to established learning deficits such as ADHD. METHODS: A total of 30 functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) of 10 sagittal nonsyndromic craniosynostosis (sNSC), 10 ADHD-combined, and 10 control adolescents were studied. The fMRI scans were analyzed utilizing Sta

Statistical learning as a window into developmental disabilities.

Until recently, most behavioral studies of children with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) have used standardized assessments as a means to probe etiology and to characterize phenotypes. Over the past decade, however, tasks originally developed to investigate learning processes in typical development have been brought to bear on developmental processes in children with IDD.This brief review will focus on one learning process in particular-statistical learning-and will provide an overview of what has been learned thus far from studies using statistical learning tasks with differ

The University Experiences of Students with Learning Disabilities.

To explore the university experiences of students with learning disabilities (LD), 63,802 responses to the 2014 Student Experience in the Research University Survey were analyzed. Compared to other students, those with self-reported LD (5.96%) had difficulty with assignments and had more obstacles caused by non-academic responsibilities and imposed by their skill levels. Students with self-reported LD sensed more bias towards people with disabilities on campus, and they were less satisfied with their overall experience. Interactions between disability status and age suggested even more challen

Neurobiological underpinnings of math and reading learning disabilities.

The primary goal of this review is to highlight current research and theories describing the neurobiological basis of math (MD), reading (RD), and comorbid math and reading disability (MD+RD). We first describe the unique brain and cognitive processes involved in acquisition of math and reading skills, emphasizing similarities and differences in each domain. Next we review functional imaging studies of MD and RD in children, integrating relevant theories from experimental psychology and cognitive neuroscience to characterize the functional neuroanatomy of cognitive dysfunction in MD and RD. We

Learning disabilities: definitions, epidemiology, diagnosis, and intervention strategies.

Learning problems occur in about 5% of school-aged children. Learning disabilities are specific and life-long but present with different school problems at different ages, depending on such factors as age, medical history, family history, and intelligence quotient. Proper individualized diagnosis and treatment plans are necessary to remediate these problems and to offer adequate coping strategies. Many children who have learning problems can be classified into one of two major categories: the dyslexia group or the nonverbal learning disability group. The role of the medical professional is imp

[Resilience and risk in children with learning disabilities].

AIM: To stress the desirability of considering the resilience approach as a complement to the risk approach in the study and intervention of children with learning disabilities (LD). DEVELOPMENT: Most of the research carried out into LD has used the correlational methodology, which has given rise to chance inferences being made and to considering them as being a risk factor for development in their own right. Yet, the findings from more recent longitudinal studies make it necessary to reconsider the inevitability of negative results in the development of children with LD and to identify the p

Taxonicity of nonverbal learning disabilities in spina bifida.

As currently defined, it is not clear whether Nonverbal Learning Disabilities (NLD) should be considered a matter of kind or magnitude (Meehl, 1995). The taxonicity of NLD, or the degree to which it is best construed as discrete versus continuous, has not been investigated using methods devised for this purpose. Latent Class Analysis (LCA) is a method for finding subtypes of latent classes from multivariate categorical data. This study represents an application of LCA on a sample of children and adolescents with spina bifida myelomeningocele (SBM) (N = 44), those presenting with features of NL

Epilepsy or stereotypy? Diagnostic issues in learning disabilities.

Approximately 0.8% of people in the general population have epilepsy. Within this group are specific sub-populations who co-present with other additional conditions, learning disability being one such example. Epilepsy rates are the highest of all in this subgroup, between 21% and 50% and positively correlated with degree of learning disability. In addition, in the more severe categories, problems frequently arise when attempting to differentiate epileptic events from other phenomenon, such as stereotyped behaviours and involuntary movements. The individual is unable to communicate changes in

Depot neuroleptic usage in adults with learning disabilities.

Most previous surveys of depot neuroleptic usage have monitored the consumption of oral psychoactive medications by heterogeneous mental handicap hospital populations. The present study assessed the prevalence, patient, practice and service delivery factors associated with depot neuroleptic usage in community learning disabilities services. The total of 79 adult subjects receiving depot neuroleptics roughly represented 0-5% of local service users. Several significant differences emerged between the factors associated with usage in the 61 (77%) subjects with psychotic disorders and 18 (23%) oth

Better health care for people with learning disabilities.

Health care and health promotion are both integral parts of the health service of the 1990s. People with learning disabilities should have access to the same health services as all other members of society. Their specific needs should not prevent them from such access; rather, services should be provided that facilitate their participation. This paper highlights some factors that have prevented people with learning disabilities from having appropriate access to health-care and health promotion services. It also outlines the components which will help to redress the balance, including practical

Subtypes of learning disabilities in adolescents and adults.

This study tested the hypothesis that a classification scheme developed for the subtyping of learning disabilities in children, when applied to a population of adolescents and adults, would result in subtyping into discrete and relatively homogeneous groups in terms of cognitive functioning and achievement. We compared three groups, arithmetic disability (AD), reading disability (RD), and reading and arithmetic disabilities (RAD), among themselves and with a comparison group with normal achievement (NA) on a variety of cognitive and achievement measures. The main findings were as follows: (a)
