Predicting abnormal birth weight and identifying associated factors using machine learning in the Hararghe Health and Demographic Surveillance System, Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Birth weight is a reliable indicator of intrauterine growth and an important predictor of neonatal survival, growth, and long-term development. Globally, approximately 15.5% of live births are low birth weight, and nearly 10% are macrosomic (high birth weight), with a substantial proportion of these cases occurring in sub-Saharan Africa. Birth weights outside the normal range of 2,500-4,000 g are considered abnormal and are associated with increased risks of neonatal and maternal complications. Ethiopia is similarly affected by the growing burden of abnormal birth weight. METHODS:

Development of transient ischemic attack risk prediction model suitable for initializing a learning health system unit using electronic medical records.

BACKGROUND: Patients with transient ischemic attack (TIA) face a significantly increased risk of stroke. However, TIA screening and early detection rates are low, especially in developing countries. This study aims to develop an inclusive and practical TIA risk prediction model using machine learning (ML) that performs well in both hospital and resource-limited clinic settings. This model is essential for initiating the first ML-enabled learning health system (LHS) unit designed for routine and equitable TIA screening and early detection across broad populations. METHODS: Employing a novel pr

Strengthening Health Systems While Responding to a Health Crisis: Lessons Learned by a Nongovernmental Organization During the Ebola Virus Disease Epidemic in Sierra Leone.

An epidemic of Ebola virus disease (EVD) beginning in 2013 has claimed an estimated 11 310 lives in West Africa. As the EVD epidemic subsides, it is important for all who participated in the emergency Ebola response to reflect on strengths and weaknesses of the response. Such reflections should take into account perspectives not usually included in peer-reviewed publications and after-action reports, including those from the public sector, nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), survivors of Ebola, and Ebola-affected households and communities. In this article, we first describe how the internat

A review of health system infection control measures in developing countries: what can be learned to reduce maternal mortality.

A functional health system is a necessary part of efforts to achieve maternal mortality reduction in developing countries. Puerperal sepsis is an infection contracted during childbirth and one of the commonest causes of maternal mortality in developing countries, despite the discovery of antibiotics over eighty years ago. Infections can be contracted during childbirth either in the community or in health facilities. Some developing countries have recently experienced increased use of health facilities for labour and delivery care and there is a possibility that this trend could lead to rising

A lifecycle governance and learning health system framework for trustworthy, generalizable, and sustainable human-ai partnership in clinical practice: Lessons from the asthma-guidance and prediction system (A-GPS).

The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into clinical decision support (CDS) holds promise for proactive, personalized, and precision care. However, current understanding of how to establish trustworthy human-AI partnerships is in its infancy, despite its critical importance for implementing AI in healthcare. We present the Asthma-Guidance and Prediction System (A-GPS) as a case study of a practice-integrated AI platform that demonstrates how trustworthy, generalizable and sustainable AI can be developed, evaluated, and implemented in real-world asthma care. We describe major challenge

Navigating the complexity of a collaborative, system-wide public health programme: learning from a longitudinal qualitative evaluation of the ActEarly City Collaboratory.

BACKGROUND: Addressing the upstream social determinants of health (e.g. built environment, education) can reduce the burden of non-communicable diseases. To do so effectively often requires system-wide collaboration. However, collaborating across multiple sectors, organizations and disciplines within a complex system can be challenging. ActEarly was a public health research consortium that aimed to improve child health by building an interdisciplinary, cross-city partnership to develop and/or evaluate upstream interventions, increase research capacity and improve collaboration between research

21st century (clinical) decision support in nursing and allied healthcare. Developing a learning health system: a reasoned design of a theoretical framework.

In this paper, we present a framework for developing a Learning Health System (LHS) to provide means to a computerized clinical decision support system for allied healthcare and/or nursing professionals. LHSs are well suited to transform healthcare systems in a mission-oriented approach, and is being adopted by an increasing number of countries. Our theoretical framework provides a blueprint for organizing such a transformation with help of evidence based state of the art methodologies and techniques to eventually optimize personalized health and healthcare.
