Prenatal head position from 12-38 weeks. II. The effects of fetal orientation and placental localization.

The possible influence of placental localization and fetal orientation on a predominant fetal head position was studied longitudinally in 10 uncomplicated pregnancies from 12 to 38 weeks by means of real-time ultrasound. Throughout gestation, when the fetal vertebral column was oriented to the left side of the mother, head positions to the right and in midline were seen most frequently, whereas a vertebral column to the right was more often associated with a head left position and a head position in midline. These findings support the suggestion that when the fetal vertebral column is in a lat

Predictive factors and radiological findings of adrenohepatic adhesion during laparoscopic adrenalectomy.

PURPOSE: This retrospective study aimed to identify predictive factors and imaging features of adrenohepatic adhesion found during laparoscopic right adrenalectomy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Altogether, 77 patients underwent laparoscopic right adrenalectomy between January 2005 and December 2018. Adrenohepatic adhesion was defined as strict adhesion that required either partial adrenalectomy with coagulation of residual tissue or partial hepatectomy to accomplish complete resection. We assessed their surgical video records to determine if adrenohepatic adhesion was present. Age, sex, body mass i

Atrial natriuretic factor in patients with congenital heart disease: correlation with hemodynamic variables.

To investigate the alpha-atrial natriuretic factor in congenital cardiac malformations, three groups of children, aged 7 months to 16 years, with different hemodynamic situations were studied during routine cardiac catheterization. Twenty-one (group I) had tetralogy of Fallot, 24 (group II) had a left to right shunt with pulmonary hypertension and 12 (control group) had a minor cardiac lesion. Alpha-atrial natriuretic factor levels were determined by a radioimmunoassay on blood samples from the inferior vena cava, right atrium, pulmonary artery, left atrium and aorta. To evaluate the effect of

Osteophyte Growth Over 10 Years in the Fingers of High-Level Climbers and Contributing Factors.

Although osteophytes in climbers' fingers are known as part of a mechano-adaption, the progression of osteophytes and contributing factors during an advanced elite climber's career is still unknown. This study analyzes osteophyte growth over 10 years for each phalangeal head and base of all proximal and distal interphalangeal joints (PIP and DIP) individually as well as the impact of potential climbing related influencing factors. Furthermore, the osteophytes located at the palmar neck of the proximal phalanx (palmar neck osteophytes) were investigated separately and joint space narrowing was

Determinants and Prognostic Implications of Left-Heart Filling Pressures in Tetralogy of Fallot.

BACKGROUND: Elevated pulmonary artery wedge pressure (PAWP) is the hallmark of left-heart failure and is responsible for heart failure symptoms and mortality. Although PAWP typically correlates with right atrial pressure (RAP), it is primarily dependent on left-heart myocardial properties and volume status. As right-heart disease can occur in the absence of left-heart disease in patients with tetralogy of Fallot (TOF), we hypothesized that RAP was the primary determinant of PAWP in this population. METHODS: A cohort study of adults with TOF that underwent right-heart catheterization at Mayo C

Motor Symptom Asymmetry Predicts Cognitive and Neuropsychiatric Profile Following Deep Brain Stimulation of the Subthalamic Nucleus in Parkinson's Disease: a 5-Year Longitudinal Study.

INTRODUCTION: Risk factors (e.g., motor symptom asymmetry) for short- and long-term cognitive and neuropsychiatric symptoms following deep brain stimulation (DBS) of the subthalamic nucleus (STN) in patients with Parkinson's disease have yet to be fully identified. The objectives of the present study were to determine whether motor symptom asymmetry in Parkinson's disease is one such risk factor and to identify predictors of subnormal cognitive decline. METHODS: A total of 26 patients receiving STN-DBS (13 with left-sided motor symptoms and 13 with right-sided ones) underwent follow-up neurop

Echocardiographic Predictors for Worsening of Six-Minute Walk Distances in Patients With Systemic Sclerosis (Scleroderma).

Change in 6-minute walk distance (6MWD) has been used as a clinical marker in pulmonary hypertension. Determinants and worsening of 6MWD remain a matter of debate because nonpulmonary factors have an impact on the 6MWD. We hypothesized that future reduction of 6MWD in patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc) was more closely associated with cardiac dysfunction. We prospectively performed standard clinical and echocardiographic evaluations in SSc patients with the 6-minute walk test at enrollment. Features associated with the 6MWD were sought in a multiple linear regression analysis and compared

Can bilingualism increase neuroplasticity of language networks in epilepsy?

Individuals with left temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) have a higher rate of atypical (i.e., bilateral or right hemisphere) language lateralization compared to healthy controls. In addition, bilinguals have been observed to have a less left-lateralized pattern of language representation. We examined the combined influence of bilingual language experience and side of seizure focus on language lateralization profiles in TLE to determine whether bilingualism promotes re-organization of language networks. Seventy-two monolingual speakers of English (21 left TLE; LTLE, 22 right TLE; RTLE, 29 age-matche

A population-based study on the prognostic impact of primary tumor sidedness in patients with peritoneal metastases from colon cancer.

Primary tumor location is an established prognostic factor in patients with (metastatic) colon cancer. Colon tumors can be divided into left-sided and right-sided tumors. The aim of this study was to determine the impact of primary tumor location on treatment and overall survival (OS) in patients with peritoneal metastases (PM) from colon cancer. This study is a retrospective, population-based cohort study. Records of patients diagnosed with colon cancer and synchronous PM, from 1995 through 2016, were retrieved from the Netherlands Cancer Registry (NCR). Data on diagnosis, staging, and treatm

[Prosopagnosia. Description and discussion of a clinical case].

Prosopagnosia was due to a right occipito-temporal infarct, but clinical and computed tomographic features emphasized a previous symmetrical damage in the left side. The case reported, and especially elaboration of literature data relative to this peculiar type of visual agnosia, suggest that bilaterality of cerebral lesions in the determining factor of prosopagnosia.

Transcriptional regulation of cardiac development: implications for congenital heart disease and DiGeorge syndrome.

In recent years, impressive advances have occurred in our understanding of transcriptional regulation of cardiac development. These insights have begun to elucidate the mystery of congenital heart disease at the molecular level. In addition, the molecular pathways emerging from the study of cardiac development are being applied to the understanding of adult cardiac disease. Preliminary results support the contention that a thorough understanding of molecular programs governing cardiac morphogenesis will provide important insights into the pathogenesis of human cardiac diseases. This review wil

Requirements of LEFTY and Nodal overexpression for tumor cell survival under hypoxia in glioblastoma.

Glioblastomas (GBM) contain numerous hypoxic foci associated with a rare fraction of glioma stem cells (GSCs). Left-right determination factor (LEFTY) and Nodal, members of the transforming growth factor β (TGF-β) superfamily, have glycogen synthase kinase 3β (GSK-3β) phosphorylation motifs and are linked with stemness in human malignancies. Herein, we investigated the roles of LEFTY and Nodal in GBM hypoxic foci. In clinical samples, significantly higher expression of LEFTY, Nodal, phospho (p) GSK-3β, pSmad2, and Nestin, as well as higher apoptotic and lower proliferation rates, were observed

Off-road machine controls: investigating the risk of carpal tunnel syndrome.

Occupationally induced hand and wrist repetitive strain injuries (RSI) such as carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) are a growing problem in North America. The purpose of this investigation was to apply a modification of the wrist flexion/ extension models of Armstrong and Chaffin (1978, 1979) to determine if joystick controller use in off-road machines could contribute to the development of CTS. A construction equipment cab in the laboratory was instrumented to allow force, displacement and angle measurements from 10 operators while they completed an approximately 30-min joystick motion protocol. Banti's Syndrome in an Adult Male: A Case Report.

Banti's syndrome is a chronic congestive enlargement of the spleen leading to the destruction of blood cells resulting in pancytopenia. It is also associated with cirrhosis and ascites along with symptoms of pancytopenia such as infection, bruising, weakness, and fatigue. Multiple factors such as hepatitis B infection, coagulation abnormalities and exposure to arsenic, etc. may also cause Banti's syndrome. Clinical evaluation with blood profile along with use of imaging studies such as MRI and splenic venography is utilized for the determination of Banti's syndrome. In this report, we present
