Pediatric Lemierre's syndrome: A systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Lemierre syndrome (LS) is a condition characterized by septic thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein. Prompt diagnosis and appropriate management are crucial to achieve a good prognosis. Controversy remains regarding the management of this condition in children. The aim of this study is to provide physicians with an update regarding the clinical presentation, management, and prognosis of LS in children. METHODS: This systematic review was conducted following the guidelines of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA). Search performed

Incomplete Lemierre's syndrome: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Incomplete Lemierre's syndrome is a bacterial oropharyngeal infection, complicated by septic emboli to end organs, but without thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein. We want to strengthen and raise awareness of the new concept of an incomplete Lemierre's syndrome and demonstrate that anticoagulation therapy should not be started systematically in the incomplete form. CASE PRESENTATION: We discuss the cases of one 23-year-old Belgian man and a 20-year-old Belgian Turkish man who presented to the emergency room with oropharyngeal infection and pulmonary septic emboli, withou

Lemierre's Syndrome: A Rare but Resurging Disease.

Lemierre's syndrome is a rare but life-threatening condition characterized by septic thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein (IJV) secondary to oropharyngeal infection, most commonly caused by Fusobacterium necrophorum. We report the case of a healthy 22-year-old male patient who presented with a sore throat, right-sided neck swelling, and sepsis. Blood cultures revealed F. necrophorum. Imaging confirmed IJV thrombosis and multiple cavitating pulmonary nodules consistent with septic emboli. The patient was managed with intravenous ceftriaxone and metronidazole, vasopressor support, and t

Proteomic Characterization of Plasma in Lemierre's Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: The underlying mechanisms of thrombosis in Lemierre's syndrome and other septic thrombophlebitis are incompletely understood. Therefore, in this case control study we aimed to generate hypotheses on its pathogenesis by studying the plasma proteome in patients with these conditions. METHODS: All patients with Lemierre's syndrome in the Skåne Region, Sweden, were enrolled prospectively during 2017 to 2021 as cases. Age-matched patients with other severe infections were enrolled as controls. Patient plasma samples were analyzed using label-free data-independent acquisition liquid chr

Lemierre's syndrome in an intravenous drug user.

A 29-year-old Dominican man with a history of intravenous heroin use and hepatitis C presented with a 5-day history of fever, dyspnoea, haemoptysis, pleuritic chest pain, abdominal pain, haematochezia and haematemesis. Initial physical examination was significant for scleral icterus, generalised abdominal tenderness to palpation, melaena and blood-tinged sputum. Blood cultures grew Fusobacterium species. CT scan of the chest revealed multiple bilateral cavitary features in lung fields. At the same time, a neck ultrasound performed demonstrated thrombophlebitis in the right internal jugular vei

[Lemierre's syndrome: Diagnosis, exploration, treatment].

Lemierre's syndrome is a rare and severe sepsis that can rapidly lead to a life-threatening condition in the absence of early management. This syndrome described at the beginning of the 20th century combines oropharyngeal infection complicated with septic thrombosis of the internal jugular vein and septic emboli predominantly pulmonary. Fusobacterium necrophorum, anaerobic germ, Gram negative bacillus is the main germ in this "necrobacillosis". The diagnosis is should be confirmed precociously with cervicothoracic CT-scan, reference exam, and bacteriological examinations (especially in atypica

[Lemierre's syndrome following peritonsillar abscess].

Lemierre's syndrome is a rare but serious condition, characterized by disseminated infection with Fusobacterium necrophorum, most often originating from the oropharynx. Thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein and septic embolisms to various organs is the typical clinical picture. We describe a 16-year-old man with peritonsillar abscess who developed abscesses in lungs, liver and spleen. The patient was admitted to the ICU and treated with surgical drainage of infectious foci, antibiotics and anticoagulant therapy. After six weeks of antibiotic treatment the patient was discharged with no

[Necrobacillosis and Lemierre's syndrome: case report].

UNLABELLED: Necrobacillosis (Fusobacterium necrophorum septicaemia) and Lemierre's syndrome (human necrobacillosis with cephalic origin) are not widely known by clinicians. CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 5-year-old girl, presenting with a Lemierre's syndrome consecutive to otitis media. Outcome was favourable under metronidazole and amoxicilline therapy for 6 weeks. CONCLUSION: Necrobacillosis remains a severe disease including peripheral abscesses (mainly in the lungs and the liver), often associated with thrombosis of the internal jugular vein in case of Lemierre's syndrome. Lemierre's syndrome as a consequence of acute supraglottitis.

Lemierre's syndrome comprises internal jugular vein thrombosis following oropharyngeal sepsis and is a rare and serious condition. It is most commonly caused by the anaerobe Fusobacterium necrophorum and typically presents as metastatic sepsis to the lungs and joints. Thrombosis is demonstrated by computed tomography (CT) of the neck, and it is routinely treated with intravenous antibiotics and anti-coagulation. We describe a case of Lemierre's syndrome following acute supraglottitis. The clinical features were of retrograde intracranial thrombosis, rather than the more usual metastatic sepsis

Lemierre's syndrome complicated by carotid thrombosis.

Lemierre's syndrome, also known as postanginal sepsis, is a rare condition that presents as an increasing sore throat due to acute pharyngitis or tonsillitis and progresses to sepsis, due to suppurative thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein. We present an atypical case of Lemierre's syndrome complicated by carotid thrombosis. The etiological factors and the diagnostic and therapeutic measures are discussed.

Lemierre syndrome with pulmonary empyema caused by Prevotella intermedia.

Lemierre syndrome is a rare disease that is most often caused by Fusobacterium necrophorum We present a case caused by Prevotella intermedia in a young, healthy man, complicated by multiple cavitary lung lesions, loculated pleural effusions requiring chest tube placement and trapezius abscess. Our case highlights (a) P. intermedia as a rare cause of Lemierre syndrome and (b) clinical response to appropriate antimicrobial therapy may be protracted.

Lemierre Syndrome Due to Dialister pneumosintes: A Case Report.

Although Dialister pneumosintes is a commensal microorganism of the oral cavity, it may sometimes cause severe systemic infections. We report a case of Lemierre syndrome (LS), which developed after D. pneumosintes infection, in a 73-year-old Japanese woman who was admitted to the hospital for throat pain, neck swelling, and fever for 3 days. She had a 3-month history of neglected dental caries, gingivitis, and periodontitis. Physical examination revealed right tonsillar erythema and swelling, and computed tomography (CT) showed peritonsillar and retropharyngeal abscesses. Ampicillin/sulbactam

An Unusual Presentation of Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma as Lemierre Syndrome.

BACKGROUND Clinical presentation of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is correlated with the extent of primary and nodal disease. Hence, depending on the anatomical structures affected, the clinical presentation varies accordingly, ranging from non-specific symptoms of epistaxis, unilateral nasal obstruction, and auditory complaints, to cranial nerve palsies. Nodal metastasis in the neck is a frequent clinical finding in nasopharyngeal carcinoma. CASE REPORT A female was admitted to the hospital because of fever and trismus with painful swelling in the right neck. Computed tomography (CT) reveale

[Lemierre syndrome: several clinical features of "a forgotten disease"].

INTRODUCTION: Lemierre syndrome (LS) is considered as a forgotten disease since the beginning of Penicillin. The lack of use of beta-lactamase inhibitors antibiotics together with the increase in the use of macrolids or second-generation and third-generation cephalosporins for oropharyngeal processes has led to an increasing incidence. We propose to review all LS cases seen in an Emergency Department over the last 5 years. METHODS: Retrospective study of patients diagnosed as LS in the Emergency Department of Hospital general universitario Gregorio Marañón from 2004 to the present. Descriptiv

Necrotizing fasciitis of the neck associated with Lemierre syndrome.

Necrotizing fasciitis of the head and neck is a rare, life-threatening, soft tissue infection rapidly involving superficial fat and fascia with necrosis of the overlying skin. If septic thrombophlebitis of the internal jugular vein complicates a parapharyngeal abscess, the clinical condition is referred to as Lemierre syndrome, also known as post-anginal sepsis. A lethal case of necrotizing fasciitis of the neck is herewith reported that developed following tooth extraction and was complicated by thrombosis of the internal jugular vein and superior vena cava in an elderly diabetic patient.
