Evidence that displacement activities facilitate behavioural transitions in ring-tailed lemurs.

Displacement activities are behavioural patterns defined by their apparent irrelevance to an animal's ongoing actions. Despite being identified in diverse taxa, their function remains poorly understood. One hypothesis posits that displacement activities facilitate transitions between different behaviours by mediating changes in animals' motivational state. Under this hypothesis, it is predicted that displacement activities will occur more frequently around changes in behaviour than at other times, and also that rates of displacement activities will be higher before than after such behavioural

Distribution of lithostathine in the mouse lemur brain with aging and Alzheimer's-like pathology.

We analyzed the cellular distribution of the pancreatic inflammatory protein lithostathine and its receptor EXTL3 in the brain of the lemurian primate Microcebus murinus which develops amyloid deposits along with aging. In adult animals (2-4.5 years old), lithostathine and EXTL3 immunoreactivities were largely distributed in the whole brain, and more intensively in almost all cortical layers and hippocampal formation. Lithostathine was observed in the perikarya and neurites of cortical neurons but also in glial cells in the border of the ventricle and the corpus callosum. In healthy aged anima

Limb joint surface areas and their ratios in Malagasy lemurs and other mammals.

Surface areas of humeral and femoral heads scale largely as a function of body size. However, differences in the relative sizes of these articular surfaces are correlated with differential joint mobility and force transmission through fore- and hindlimbs. They can therefore assist interpretation of the positional behavior of extinct species. In this paper, we document variation in ratios of humeral head surface area to femoral head surface area among extant primates and other mammals. We then examine a group of extinct primates: the subfossil lemurs of Madagascar. Many Malagasy lemurs, includi

The gut microbiome of Madagascar's lemurs from forest fragments in the central highlands.

The gut microbiome is now understood to play essential roles in host nutrition and health and has become a dominant research focus in primatology. Over the past decade, research has clarified the evolutionary traits that govern gut microbiome structure across species and the ecological traits that further influence consortia within them. Nevertheless, we stand to gain resolution by sampling hosts in understudied habitats. We focus on the lemurs of Madagascar's central highlands. Madagascar's highlands have a deep history as heterogeneous grassland-forest mosaics, but due to significant anthrop

Twin vocal folds as a novel evolutionary adaptation for vocal communications in lemurs.

Primates have varied vocal repertoires to communicate with conspecifics and sometimes other species. The larynx has a central role in vocal source generation, where a pair of vocal folds vibrates to modify the air flow. Here, we show that Madagascan lemurs have a unique additional pair of folds in the vestibular region, parallel to the vocal folds. The additional fold has a rigid body of a vocal muscle branch and it is covered by a stratified squamous epithelium, equal to those of the vocal fold. Such anatomical features support the hypothesis that it also vibrates in a manner like the vibrati

RENAL PATHOLOGY IN CAPTIVE ADULT ALAOTRAN GENTLE LEMURS (HAPALEMUR ALAOTRENSIS).

Full medical histories from captive Alaotran gentle lemurs or Bandro (Hapalemur alaotrensis) > 1 yr old that died between 1990 and 2016 were requested from holding institutions. Eighty-six individuals died during the period analyzed. Full postmortem reports were received from 40 (46.5%) animals from 16 different institutions across Europe (15) and North America (1). Eighteen animals (45%) showed azotemia within three months of death, with accompanying histological renal lesions. Another 17 (42.5%) showed histological renal lesions, but no renal function assessment was carried out antemortem, o

Regional, seasonal and interspecific variation in 15N and 13C in sympatric mouse lemurs.

Madagascar provides some of the rare examples where two or more primate species of the same genus and with seemingly identical niche requirements occur in sympatry. If congeneric primate species co-occur in other parts of the world, they differ in size in a way that is consistent with Hutchinson's rule for coexisting species, or they occupy different ecological niches. In some areas of Madagascar, mouse lemurs do not follow these "rules" and thus seem to violate one of the principles of community ecology. In order to understand the mechanisms that allow coexistence of sympatric congeneric spec

NECROHEMORRHAGIC MENINGOENCEPHALITIS IN A RED RUFFED LEMUR (VARECIA RUBRA) CAUSED BY ACANTHAMOEBA T1 GENOTYPE.

A 5-yr-old castrated male red ruffed lemur (Varecia rubra) was evaluated for cluster seizures over a 24-h period. Seizures were refractory to anticonvulsive therapy. MRI revealed meningoencephalitis affecting the left occipital lobe. Because of concern for superrefractory status epilepticus and overall poor prognosis, the animal was humanely euthanized. Postmortem examination revealed necrohemorrhagic meningoencephalitis with intralesional amoebic trophozoites and cysts. The causative agent was identified as Acanthamoeba spp. T1 genotype via immunohistochemistry staining and species-specific r

Reproductive loss attributed to Lactococcus petauri infection in a black-and-white ruffed lemur.

Lactococci have been associated with fetal and neonatal infections in humans and cattle. Here we describe a case of reproductive loss attributed to Lactococcus petauri in a lemur. A full-term black-and-white ruffed lemur (Varecia variegata) was found dead in the indoor area of a zoologic exhibit. Classification as a late-term abortion or stillbirth was unclear as the precise gestational time was unknown. A medical checkup of the dam revealed fever and neutrophilic leukocytosis; recovery followed treatment with enrofloxacin. The main histologic findings were placental edema and hemorrhage, hepa

Seasonal changes in the parasite prevalence of a small Malagasy lemur species (Lepilemur edwardsi).

Parasitic infections can impact the fitness of individuals and can have influence on animals' population dynamics. An individuals' parasite prevalence often changes depending on external or seasonal changes, for example, rainfall and ambient temperatures, but also on internal changes, for example, changes in body condition. In this study we aimed to identify the environmental factors that may influence the intestinal parasite and ectoparasite prevalence of the folivorous Malagasy primate species, Lepilemur edwardsi, living in a seasonal dry deciduous forest. Species living in this habitat have

Anatomy, histology, and ultrasonography of the normal adrenal gland in brown lemur: Eulemur fulvus.

BACKGROUND: The medical care currently to brown lemurs (Eulemur fulvus) is limited by a lack of knowledge of their anatomy. The aim of this study was to describe the anatomy and histology and obtain ultrasonographic measurements of normal adrenal glands in these animals. METHODS: The adrenal glands of four lemurs cadavers were used for the anatomical and histological studies, and those of 15 anesthetized lemurs were examined by ultrasonography. RESULTS: Anatomically, the adrenal glands of brown lemurs are comparable to those of other species. The histological findings showed that the cortex

Pigmented dermal duct tumour (Winkelmann-McLeod type poroma) in a ring-tailed lemur (Lemurcatta).

A pigmented dermal duct tumour was diagnosed in a 12-year-old female ring-tailed lemur (Lemur catta) kept in a zoo. The tumour developed on the ventral surface of the left fourth digit and appeared as a black, solid, ulcerated nodule. Histologically, it was a well-demarcated, non-encapsulated dermal proliferation of basaloid neoplastic epithelial cells forming solid nests with scattered small duct-like lumina. Scattered melanocytes and abundant melanin pigment were present within the tumour. There was no continuity between the tumour and the epidermis. Immunohistochemically, the basaloid neopl

Lemur Distribution in Relation to Treefall Canopy Gaps in Masoala National Park, Northeast Madagascar.

Madagascar is a biodiversity hotspot facing increasing anthropogenic pressures, with 95% of lemur species threatened with extinction. In addition to habitat loss and hunting, cyclones create treefall gaps with unknown effects on arboreal species. We examined the effect of Cyclone Eliakim, which struck Masoala National Park in March 2018 with sustained wind speeds reaching 151 km/h. We assessed whether lemur densities and their microhabitat niches changed in relation to the cyclone, and whether their distributions were related to treefall gaps. We conducted 110.42 km of transect walks for diurn

Case-report: Massive infection by Cysticercus longicollis in a captive Lemur catta from Italy.

An adult male ring-tailed lemur (Lemur catta) from a biopark of northern Italy was submitted to necropsy. A multi-organ parasitic infection was macroscopically evident. Abundant sero-hemorrhagic fluid with larval parasites was present in all cavities. The microscopic evaluation of parasites and the molecular characterization revealed the presence of Cysticercus longicollis (the larval stage of Taenia crassiceps). Histology of liver, lungs, intestine and urinary bladder revealed several larval parasites surrounded by a severe lymphocytic infiltrate, fibrous tissue and hemorrhages. This is the f

Melatonin and methimazole mimic short-day-induced fattening in gray mouse lemurs.

Short-day-induced fattening was investigated in the small nocturnal primate Microcebus murinus. Animals were either transferred from long photoperiod (LP) to short photoperiod (SP) or maintained in LP and submitted to various treatments. Animals fed daily on 40 microg of melatonin (MEL) at two different times showed a significant increase in body mass compared to LP-exposed animals. This weight gain was more marked in animals fed with MEL 2 h before night onset, suggesting a critical period around the first hours of the night. The MEL-induced fattening was associated with an increase in food i

Non-invasive monitoring of reproductive status in wild mongoose lemurs (Eulemur mongoz).

Endocrine profiles were investigated in wild and captive mongoose lemurs (Eulemur mongoz; Lemuridae) by analysing faecal progestagens and oestrogens. Oestrous cycle characterization was not possible, as most females appeared to conceive during the first oestrus of the breeding season. Conception was preceded by a pseudo-oestrus with no discernible luteal phase. Pseudo-oestrus and oestrus identification was possible by investigating the oestrogen:progestagen ratio. Pregnancy was reliably determined approximately 47 days after conception, when progestagen and oestrogen excretion increased above

Age-related molecular and functional remodeling of the choroid plexus in the gray mouse lemur.

Aging is accompanied by complex alterations in brain structure and functions, with growing evidence implicating the choroid plexus (CP) as a key regulator of cognitive and motor function. Here, we investigated age-related changes in the CP of the gray mouse lemur (Microcebus murinus), a non-human primate model that recapitulates human brain aging features. Lemurs of different ages underwent behavioral testing, followed by transcriptomic profiling and immunofluorescence analyses of lateral ventricle CP tissue. Behavioral assessments revealed age-related declines in motor coordination and explor

Detection of virus-like particles in the liver of black and white ruffed lemurs with hepatitis.

Two young black and white ruffed lemurs (Varecia variegata variegata) died at the San Diego Zoo (San Diego, California, USA) with extensive liver lesions suggestive of acute viral infection. Immunoassays performed to detect hepatitis B virus (HBV) markers were negative. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) primers overlapping the HBV core gene produced an amplicon of approximately 411 base pairs (bp) from serum DNA of a HBV-positive western lowland gorilla (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) but not from serum DNA of either lemur. Cesium chloride gradient fractions of liver homogenates from both lemurs conta

BIOMEDICAL EVALUATION OF A BROWN LEMUR (EULEMUR FULVUS SPP.) POPULATION FROM MBOUZI ISLET, MAYOTTE ISLAND.

The brown lemur population (Eulemur fulvus spp.) in Mbouzi islet is not native, and was introduced in 1997. Since then, the population has grown. In 2012 the National Council for Protection of Nature of Mayotte requested to remove this population of lemurs from Mbouzi, as they were suspected to be a threat to the protected endemic flora of the islet. The Association Francophone des Vétérinaires de Parcs Zoologiques (French-speaking Zoo Veterinarians Association, AFVPZ) was asked to conduct a biomedical evaluation of the population. Fifty-two animals were captured, anesthetized, and weighed. Th
