Members of the tetraspanin superfamily function as transmembrane scaffold proteins that mediate the assembly of membrane proteins into specific signaling complexes. Tetraspanins also interact with each other and concentrate membrane proteins into tetraspanin-enriched microdomains (TEMs). The authors conducted a retrospective study during a 4-year period (jan. 91-dec. 94) of the charts of 26 patients (27 eyes) treated by pars plana vitrectomy for posteriorly dislocated crystalline lenses or lens fragments. PURPOSE: The porcine eye is frequently used as a research model. This paper analyzes the effect of different storage methods on the transparency of pig crystalline lens.
METHODS: A spectral transmission curve (from 220 to 780 nm) for the crystalline lens was determined experimentally after storage in different conditions: saline solution, formalin, castor oil, and freezing at -80°C. The total transmission in the visible spectrum, which was used as an index of transparency, was calculated from these curves. For comparative purposes, fresh lenses were evaluated and used as controls.

Traumatic subconjunctival crystalline lens is a rare phenomena; we report a case of ocular trauma by the tail of a cow. A 60-year-old female presented with history of trauma to her left eye by the tail of a cow, she had severe headache, redness and pain in her left eye. She was admitted and the crystalline lens was found in the subconjunctival space and was removed surgically.

Lenses from 27 human eyes ranging in age from 10 to 87 years were used to determine how accommodation and age affect the optical properties of the lens. A scanning laser technique was used to measure focal length and spherical aberration of the lenses, while the lenses were subjected to stretching forces applied through the ciliary body/zonular complex. The study was performed to compare visual evoked potentials of old aphakic and pseudophakic patients (61 to 80 years) with age-matched controls. No differences were found between latencies of the two groups. Thus it seems that increased lens density of old subjects does not influence the processing of the visual stimulus.

Lens crystallin glycation, thiol oxidation and aggregation showed parallel changes in streptozotocin-diabetic and aging rats.
