The need for intraocular lens implantation in children.

The intraocular lens offers an additional experimental parameter to be considered for the visual rehabilitation of children with traumatic or unilateral infantile cataracts. The disadvantages of aphakic spectacles or contact lens and amblyopia have committed many of these eyes to the status of visual cripples. In this series of 41 patients, with a maximum of 24 months follow-up, it has been concluded that the IOL may be successfully implanted.

Reduced intraocular pressure after phacoemulsification and posterior chamber intraocular lens implantation.

PURPOSE: To ascertain whether phacoemulsification with posterior chamber intraocular lens (IOL) implantation causes long-term reduction in intraocular pressure (IOP). SETTING: Private practice, Kempten, Germany. METHODS: Intraocular pressure was measured in both eyes of 120 consecutive patients who were unilaterally phakic after phacoemulsification a mean of 17 months +/- 17 (SD) previously. Mean age of the 36 men and 84 women was 76 +/- 10 years. Data were analyzed using binomial distribution and the Wilcoxon signed-rank test. RESULTS: The median ratio of IOP in the pseudophakic eye to IOP

[Intraocular pressure after cataract extraction with implantation of an intraocular lens].

The subject of our investigations was the behaviour of the IOP after extracapsular and intracapsular operations with implantation of artificial lenses as well into the anterior as into posterior chamber. The investigations were performed on the material of 395 eyes operated in the years 1985-1988. It was established that after these operations glaucoma is a very rare complication.

[Chop technique with lens loop-pad and foldable intraocular lens implantation].

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the use of chop technique with lens loop-pad and foldable intraocular lens implantation for cataract surgery. METHOD: Chop technique with self-designed lens loop-pad and foldable intraocular lens implantation were performed on 73 eyes of 64 cases with senile cataract. RESULTS: The intraoperative complication was posterior capsular rupture in only 2 cases. All the patients had very mild postoperative reaction and round pupil. The corrected visual acuity was improved to 0.5 or over in 79.5% (58 eyes) at one week postoperatively, and in 89.0% (65 eyes) at three months pos

Customized toric intraocular lens implantation in cornea plana.

A 50-year-old woman with cornea plana had reduced visual acuity due to development of lenticular changes. Flat keratometry with high astigmatism, shallow anterior chamber depth, and short axial length made it challenging both for intraocular lens (IOL) power calculation and cataract surgery. Surgery was planned for the right eye because the left eye was densely amblyopic. IOL power required was beyond the commercially available lenses; hence, a customized toric IOL was obtained. Phacoemulsification was successfully performed along with in-the-bag implantation of the toric IOL, which resulted i

Transient myopic shift after phakic intraocular lens implantation.

UNLABELLED: Three patients presented with spontaneous myopic shift 6 weeks to 6 months after implantation of the Artiflex phakic intraocular lens (pIOL). The corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA) was maintained in all cases. Cyclopentolate drops successfully reverted the myopic shift in all cases; however, 2 cases required surgical reenclavation of the pIOL haptics to achieve long-term refractive stability. At the last follow-up, all patients had returned to emmetropia, with uncorrected distance visual acuities of 20/20. A slight decrease in objective optical quality was observed. No eye los

Angle-closure glaucoma after piggyback intraocular lens implantation.

PURPOSE: To report a case of angle closure glaucoma after piggyback intraocular lens implantation and its treatment. METHODS: The authors present the case of a 75-year-old woman who was seen in the emergency department with angle closure glaucoma. Two years before she had undergone piggyback intraocular lens (IOL) implantation in order to correct a refractive error after cataract surgery. Ultrasound biomicroscopy revealed a closed angle with synechiae in 360 degrees as well as the presence of two IOLs: one in the capsular bag and the other in the ciliary sulcus. Extraction of the anterior IOL

Refractive enhancement following presbyopia-correcting intraocular lens implantation.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Presbyopia-correcting intraocular lenses are widely available. Residual ametropia is one of the most common issues that can result in patient dissatisfaction. Options for correcting refractive surprises include piggyback intraocular lens implantation, corneal incisional surgery and laser correction. Excimer laser surgery is a safe and predictable method to correct residual amounts of ametropia in pseudophakic patients with monofocal intraocular lenses; however, there is scant published literature regarding this technique. RECENT FINDINGS: Presbyopia-correcting intraocular l

Trabeculectomy combined with phacoemulsification and intraocular lens implantation.

It has recently become popular to use mitomycin C (MMC) with trabeculectomy. MMC helps to maintain effective filtration and long-term intraocular pressure (IOP) control, while the use of laser suture lysis has improved the safety of this procedure. We evaluated the outcome of trabeculectomy alone and of trabeculectomy plus phacoemulsification (PEA) and intraocular lens (IOL) implantation, each supplemented with MMC. The mean preoperative IOP for the trabeculectomy alone group was 22.4 +/- 3.2 mmHg(bleb+), 25.3 +/- 2.6 mmHg(bleb-), and that of the combined surgery group was 22.4 +/- 2.8 mmHg(bl

Secondary posterior chamber intraocular lens implantation in children.

BACKGROUND: Primary intraocular lens (IOL) implantation after cataract aspiration is a widely accepted means of correcting pediatric aphakia. However, little is available in the literature on secondary IOL implantation in children. We present our experience over the past 6 years. METHODS: The charts of 57 aphakic children (61 eyes) who underwent secondary posterior chamber IOL implantation between January 1989 and April 1996 were reviewed. In general, these children were either intolerant of or noncompliant with their contact lenses. An attempt was made to correlate visual outcome with patien
