BACKGROUND: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the main types of primary liver cancer, which shows some abnormal glycosylation, such as the increase of fucose. Lens culinaris agglutinin (LCA), a natural plant lectin that can bind to mannose and fucose, has been reported to be antiproliferative to may tumors. However, the effect of LCA on the vitality and migration ability of human hepatoma cells is not demonstrated. Therefore, the aim of this study is to investigate the effects of LCA on vitality and migration in human hepatoma cells and its potential mechanisms.
METHODS AND RESULTS: LCA had n

Lentil (Lens culinaris; Fabaceae), one of the major pulse crops in the world, is an important source of proteins, prebiotics, lipids, and essential minerals as well as functional components such as flavonoids, polyphenols, and phenolic acids. To improve crop nutritional and medicinal traits, hybridization and mutation are widely used in plant breeding research. In this study, mutant lentil populations were generated by γ-irradiation for the development of new cultivars by inducing genetic diversity. The objective was to identify peptides with dual antioxidant and angiotensin I converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitory activities released from lentil proteins by Savinase®. The influence of gastrointestinal digestion on peptide bioactivity was also assayed. Fragments from vicilin, convicilin and legumin were the most abundant peptides identified. Peptides LLSGTQNQPSFLSGF, NSLTLPILRYL, TLEPNSVFLPVLLH showed the highest antioxidant (0.013-1.432μmol Trolox eq./μmol peptide) and ACE inhibitory activities (IC50=44-120μM). Gastrointestinal digestion of peptides improved their dual activity (10-14μmol Tr

The study was undertaken to study a relationship between the changes of some parameters of the biochemical and mineral composition of different plants, such as rape, pods, and lentil, and the levels of soil radiation pollution, by using the conventional methods. Radioactive pollution of dark-grey forest soils was found to cause a change in the biochemical composition of plant seeds even at the level of cesium 137 (137Cs) within the present temporary permissible levels (TPL) (600 Bq/kg): there were elevated concentrations of salts of potassium, phosphorus, ammonia nitrogen, catechols, sucrose,

BACKGROUND: Prepared sprouts, after culturing in a medium with an increased iron concentration, could become a beneficial food iron fortificant. However, the efficient iron accumulation depends on the plants genus, species and/or varieties. The aim of the study was to indicate the seeds or grains which accumulate iron most efficiently during the sprouting process.
METHODS: Alfalfa, lentil, lupine and soybean seeds as well as wheat grains were sprouted in abiotic stress conditions induced by the excess of iron(II) in culture media. The tolerance of these plants to iron concentration and its ac

Evaluating mineral bioaccessibility in plant-based foods is essential to assess their real nutritional value. Hummus, a legume-based preparation widely consumed and culturally accepted, is a promising vehicle to enhance mineral intake, yet little is known about its micronutrient bioaccessibility. This study evaluated the mineral composition and in vitro bioaccessibility of iron (Fe), zinc (Zn), and calcium (Ca) in hummus prepared from whole brown lentil flour (BH), dehulled brown lentil flour (DBH), and dehulled Turkish red lentil flour (DTH). Potential modulators including phytic acid, total

BACKGROUND: Legume consumption has increased during the two past decades. In France, legumes are responsible for 14.6% of food-related anaphylaxis in children, with peanut as the main allergen (77.5%). Few studies have demonstrated cross-reactivities between peanut and other legumes. The aim of this study was to determine prevalence and relevance of sensitization to legumes in peanut-allergic children.
METHODS: All children, aged of 1-17 years, admitted to the Pediatric Allergy Department of the University Hospital of Nancy between January 1, 2017 and February 29, 2020 with a confirmed peanut

PURPOSE: Urine samples were obtained from a previously completed study that showed lentil consumption attenuates the increase in blood pressure that occurs over time in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs). The objective of the present study was to compare the metabolite profile of the urine samples from control and lentil-fed SHR in relation to the compounds present in lentils but not in other pulses.
METHODS: The urine samples were from 17-week-old, male SHR fed semi-purified diet prepared with powder (30 %, w/w) from cooked whole pulses or a pulse-free control diet (n = 8/group) for 4 we

Bacterial-fungal interactions represent fundamental ecological associations that shape microbial community structure across diverse environments. While traditionally framed through the lens of antagonism, bacteria and fungi engage in sophisticated metabolic dialogs extending far beyond simple warfare. Both primary and specialized metabolites function as context-dependent signals, nutrient resources, and modulators of cellular processes that fundamentally influence the physiology, development, and evolutionary trajectory of both fungi and bacteria. Primary metabolites mediate mutualistic relati

Bioactive peptides produced from natural sources are considered as strategic target for drug discovery. Hyperglycemia caused protein glycation alters the structure of many tissues that impairs their functions and lead complications diseases in human body. This study investigated the bioactive peptides produced from red and brown Lens culinaris that might inhibit protein glycation to prevent diabetic complications. In this study, red and brown Lens culinaris protein hydrolysates were prepared by tryptic digestion, using an enzyme/substrate ratio of 1:20 (g/g), at 37°C, 12 hr then peptide fracti

Cell membranes are composed of a variety of lipids and proteins where they interact with each other to fulfill their roles. The first step in modeling these interactions in molecular simulations is to have reliable mimetics of the membrane's lipid environment. This Feature Article presents our recent efforts to model complex cellular membranes using all-atom force fields. A short review of the CHARMM36 (C36) lipid force field and its recent update to incorporate the long-range dispersion is presented. Key examples of model membranes mimicking various species and organelles are given. These inc

This article rethinks ageing with chronic breathlessness through a posthuman and postphenomenological lens, drawing on ethnographic fieldwork among older adults with chronic respiratory disease in northern England. The article conceptualises breathlessness not solely as a biomedical symptom but as a sociomaterial assemblage involving human bodies, medical technologies, environments, and more-than-human companions. Support groups are likewise framed as assemblages that co-produce care through interactions among people, spaces, objects, and infrastructures. Building on feminist posthumanist theo

Lentil fermentation has a promising potential as a strategy for development of multifunctional ingredients targeting metabolic syndrome (MetS). Response surface methodology was applied to optimize lentil fermentation and study its effects on generation of peptides, soluble phenolics and bioactivities. Fermentation using Lactobacillus plantarum and Savinase® 16 L was carried out at different pH (6.5-8.5) and times (5.5-30 h). Analysis of variance was performed to evaluate linear, quadratic and interaction effects between fermentation parameters. pH positively affected peptides, soluble phenolic

Dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) is a disease of the heart muscle that affects both humans and dogs. Certain canine diets have been associated with DCM, but the diet-disease link is unexplained, and novel methods are needed to elucidate mechanisms. We conducted metabolomic profiling of 9 diets associated with canine DCM, containing ≥ 3 pulses, potatoes, or sweet potatoes as main ingredients, and in the top 16 dog diet brands most frequently associated with canine DCM cases reported to the FDA (3P/FDA diets), and 9 non-3P/FDA diets. We identified 88 named biochemical compounds that were higher in 3

BACKGROUND: It is well known that the legume proteins have a lowering effect on plasma cholesterol and triacylglycerols (TG) concentrations compared to animal proteins. The protein itself, as well as non-protein constituents, naturally present in legumes may be implicated.
AIM OF THE STUDY: The effects of various dietary purified legumes proteins compared to casein, were determined on plasma TG level, VLDL concentration and composition. Moreover, lipoprotein lipase (LPL) activity in epididymal fat, gastrocnemius and heart was investigated to evaluate in these tissues their capacity to release

Lens epithelium-derived growth factor (LEDGF) fusion proteins can direct HIV-1 DNA integration to novel sites in the host genome. The C terminus of LEDGF contains an integrase binding domain (IBD), and the N terminus binds chromatin. LEDGF normally directs integrations to the bodies of expressed genes. Replacing the N terminus of LEDGF with chromatin binding domains (CBDs) from other proteins changes the specificity of HIV-1 DNA integration. We chose two well-characterized CBDs: the plant homeodomain (PHD) finger from ING2 and the chromodomain from heterochromatin binding protein 1alpha (HP1al

AIM: We investigated pathological features of Lens culinaris agglutinin-reactive alpha-fetoprotein (AFP-L3)-positive hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in order to seek a pathological basis of poor prognosis of HCC patients with elevated AFP-L3.
METHODS: A total of 111 patients with HCC < or =5 cm in diameter who underwent hepatic resection were studied. Serum AFP-L3 concentration was measured within a month prior to surgery by lectin-affinity electrophoresis coupled with antibody-affinity blotting, and expressed as AFP-L3 percentage of total AFP. AFP-L3 of 10% or higher was judged to be positive

Fruit type divergence in closely related species offers a powerful lens into the evolution of plant developmental programs. Within the Rosaceae family, pomes (e.g., apple) and drupes (e.g., peach) share a common ancestry but exhibit a fundamental difference: pomes recruit the hypanthium to form fleshy tissue, while drupes develop flesh solely from the ovary wall. To uncover the regulatory basis of this divergence, we conduct a comparative tissue-resolved developmental transcriptomic analysis across these fruit types. We identify distinct patterns of auxin-related networks, with pomes showing p

Fungal and amoebic keratitis are rare but serious infections that can lead to significant vision loss and are often difficult to diagnose promptly, particularly in resource-limited environments. Although conventional cultures and PCR have notable diagnostic limitations, in vivo confocal microscopy (IVCM) offers rapid and accurate pathogen detection. This retrospective case series examines four cases of infectious keratitis in deployed military personnel, highlighting the diagnostic and clinical utility of IVCM. All patients were young males, with a mean age of 29.75 years. Half had a history o
