Presbyopia Correction Using Multifocal Soft Contact Lenses in Patients With Monofocal Intraocular Lenses.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the effectiveness of presbyopia correction using multifocal soft contact lenses (MF SCLs) for pseudophakic subjects with monofocal intraocular lenses (IOLs). METHODS: In 11 subjects, after monofocal IOL implantation, disposable MF SCLs (Dailies Total 1 Multifocal, Alcon) were daily used for 3 months. Binocular visual acuity between 0.3 and 5 m was measured using an all-distance vision tester (AS-15, Kowa) at 1 and 3 months and compared before and during MF SCL wear. Binocular contrast sensitivity testing was conducted under mesopic and photopic illuminations at 1 mo

[Complications after implantation of anterior chamber lenses. An analysis of 4,100 explanted intraocular lenses].

In this study we analyzed the incidence and types of complications seen after cataract surgery and implantation of anterior chamber intraocular lenses (AS-IOLs). This report is based on a review of 4104 explanted AC-IOLs that were submitted to the Center for IOL Research over the past 10 years. The results from pathological examinations were correlated with clinical information. Of the 4104 IOLs, 50% were closed-loop designs (n = 2095/4104), and 22% were open-loop lenses (919/4104). The IOLs most frequently explanted were the closed loop designs Leiske (n = 847) and Stableflex (n = 808). The m

Trifocal intraocular lenses versus bifocal intraocular lenses after cataract extraction among participants with presbyopia.

BACKGROUND: Presbyopia occurs when the lens of the eyes loses its elasticity leading to loss of accommodation. The lens may also progress to develop cataract, affecting visual acuity and contrast sensitivity. One option of care for individuals with presbyopia and cataract is the use of multifocal or extended depth of focus intraocular lens (IOL) after cataract surgery. Although trifocal and bifocal IOLs are designed to restore three and two focal points respectively, trifocal lens may be preferable because it restores near, intermediate, and far vision, and may also provide a greater range of

Iridocapsular lenses versus iris-clip lenses: comparison of the results and complications of 100 of each.

The results and complications of implantation of 100 iridocapsular and 100 iris-clip lenses are evaluated. The follow-up period for the first group varied from one to 25 months (mean 12 months) and from one to 43 months (mean 27 months) for the second group. I performed all of the operations and most of the follow-up examinations. Of the patients with iridocapsular lenses, 86 percent and of those with iris-clip lenses, 87 percent obtained a visual acuity of 0.5 (6/12) or better. Binocular vision, positive depth perception, and a small degree of aniseikonia (3% or less) are evident optical bene

Polished diamond X-ray lenses.

High-quality bi-concave 2D focusing diamond X-ray lenses of apex-radius R = 100 µm produced via laser-ablation and improved via mechanical polishing are presented here. Both for polished and unpolished individual lenses and for stacks of ten lenses, the remaining figure errors determined using X-ray speckle tracking are shown and these results are compared with those of commercial R = 50 µm beryllium lenses that have similar focusing strength and physical aperture. For two stacks of ten diamond lenses (polished and unpolished) and a stack of eleven beryllium lenses, this paper presents measure

[Presbyopia Correction with Intraocular Lenses].

Surgical correction of presbyopia can be performed by refractive lens exchange, replacing the lens with a monofocal, a multifocal or an extended-depth-of-focus (EDOF) intraocular lens (IOL). Option 1, a monofocal IOL, must be combined with monovision, otherwise presbyopia cannot be corrected. Monovision in this context means one eye for distance and one eye targeted for - 1.5 D. With this concept glasses are still required for near (30 - 40 cm) and for driving, but intermediate distances and everyday life is usually possible without glasses. Option 2, a multifocal IOL, results in spectacle ind

Tear dynamics under scleral lenses.

PURPOSE: To evaluate post-lens tear dynamics at two different time points during scleral lens wear in two cohorts with 10 neophytes each. METHODS: All subjects wore bilaterally scleral lenses for 5 h on 3 separate visits. Post-lens tear exchange was measured using Out-in method, which required 5 μL of 2% FITC-Dextran instilled on the bulbar conjunctiva during lens wear. Time taken to observe the first sign of fluorescence in post-lens tear reservoir was recorded with a stopwatch. Out-in measurements were collected at 5-hour  post-lens insertion in Group 1 and compared with those obtained at 2

Multifocal intraocular lenses: An overview.

Multifocal intraocular lenses are increasingly used in the management of pseudophakic presbyopia. After multifocal intraocular lens implantation, most patients do not need spectacles or contact lenses and are pleased with the result. Complications, however, may affect the patient's quality of life and level of satisfaction. Common problems with multifocal lenses are blurred vision and photic phenomena associated with residual ametropia, posterior capsule opacification, large pupil size, wavefront anomalies, dry eye, and lens decentration. The main reasons for these are failure to neuroadapt, l

[Determination of toric intraocular lenses].

BACKGROUND: In the last decades, toric posterior chamber lenses (TPCLs) for cataract surgery and phakic toric lenses (PTLs) for refractive surgery have become more and more popular for correcting high or excessive corneal astigmatism. The purpose of this article is to present a vergence-based calculation scheme for TPCLs and PTLs. METHODS: In Gaussian optics (in the paraxial space), spherocylindrical optical surfaces can be described in a mathematically equivalent formulation as vergences. There are dual notations: The standard notation is used for transforming vergences through a homogeneous

Single optic accommodative intraocular lenses.

Currently, two single optic accommodative intraocular lenses are available for implantation. Both designs rely on the interaction of the ciliary muscle with the zonule and capsule to induce axial movement of the optic. This article reviews the historical development, laboratory data, and clinical findings relating to these interesting devices.
