Systematics of Apatelodidae Neumoegen & Dyar, 1894 (Lepidoptera: Bombycoidea) based on molecular and morphological data.

Apatelodidae is a family of New World bombycoids distributed mainly in the Neotropical region, with 14 genera, 222 valid species and 8 subspecies. These moths are medium-sized with a wingspan ranging from 2 to 8cm, generally greyish, straw-yellow or reddish-brown, with darker spots and lines on the dorsal side of the wings. We combine adult morphology and molecular data to test, under a probabilistic framework, the monophyly of apatelodid genera and the placement of Tamphana (Bombycidae). We sampled the type species of 12 of the 14 valid genera of Apatelodidae, including the type species of sy

Comparative toxicity and enzymatic detoxification responses in Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) to two insecticides.

The fall armyworm (FAW), Spodoptera frugiperda Smith (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), poses a significant threat to food security, necessitating effective management strategies. While chemical control remains a primary approach, understanding the toxicity and detoxification mechanisms of different insecticides is crucial. In this study, we conducted leaf-dipping bioassays to assess the toxicity of quinalphos and beta-cypermethrin·emamectin benzoate (β-cyp·EMB) on S. frugiperda larvae. Additionally, we assessed the response of alterations in CarE, GST, MFO, and AChE activities to sublethal concentrati

Impact of plant resistance on southwestern corn borer (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) biology and plant damage.

Southwestern corn borer, Diatraea grandiosella Dyar (Lepidoptera: Crambidae), is a major insect pest of corn, Zea mays L., in the southern United States. Germplasm lines with resistance to southwestern corn borer have been developed and released by the USDA-ARS. Two single-cross hybrids produced by crossing germplasm lines with resistance to southwestern corn borer and a susceptible single-cross hybrid were infested with southwestern corn borer larvae in a 2-yr field test conducted in Mississippi. The susceptible hybrid sustained significantly more leaf damage and stalk tunneling than either r

Performance of crosses among flint maize populations under infestation by Sesamia nonagrioides (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae).

Flint maize, Zea mays L., varieties provide some interesting agronomic characteristics and kernels that possess a better ability than other kernels for developing high-quality flour. The pink stem borer, Sesamia nonagrioides Lefebvre, is an important constraint for the maize crop in Mediterranean regions. The objective of this work was to identify a "flint x flint" heterotic pattern that would perform well under artificial infestation by S. nonagrioides. A 10-population diallel was evaluated under infestation by S. nonagrioides in 2 yr. Variety effects were the only significant effects involve

Binding characteristics of chemosensory protein 11 from Grapholita molesta Busck (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) to insecticides.

Chemosensory proteins (CSPs) are small soluble proteins that recognize and bind to various small chemical molecules. Although numerous studies have shown that CSPs play an important role in olfactory communication among insects, recent research indicated that CSPs also contribute to insecticide resistance. The antennae-enriched GmolCSP11 from Grapholita molesta Busck exhibits high binding affinities for seven insecticide ligands, as verified by fluorescence competitive binding assays of recombinant protein. GmolCSP11 exhibited the strongest binding affinity for chlorpyrifos (Ki = 1.01 ± 0.00 μ

Vertical Distribution of Butterfly Community (Lepidoptera) and Its Drivers on Mount Gongga, Western China.

Butterfly elevational distribution patterns are modulated by temperature stratification, vegetation composition, butterfly functional traits, and anthropogenic disturbances. To explore the elevational patterns of butterfly α- and β-diversity and their driving mechanisms on Mount Gongga, we established 18 standardized 1000 m transects at 200 m intervals across an elevational range of 1000-4500 m. Butterfly species richness and abundance were systematically surveyed using the line-transect method. The results indicated that both butterfly species richness and abundance significantly decreased wi

Biochemical and genetic mechanisms in Pieris rapae (Lepidoptera: Pieridae) resistance under emamectin benzoate stress.

Pieris rapae (Lepidoptera: Pieridae) poses a significant threat to Brassicaceae crops, leading to substantial losses annually. Repeated insecticide applications are widely used to protect crops and increase the resistance of P. rapae. Exploring the biochemical and molecular basis of insecticide tolerance in P. rapae is crucial for achieving effective insect suppuration and implementing resistance control strategies. In our research, emamectin benzoate (EBZ) resistance was developed in P. rapae strain through selective pressure over 15 generations. Moreover, the biochemical mechanisms underlyin

Disentangling Taxonomic Confusions in the Aporia agathon Group Using Mitochondrial Genomic Data (Lepidoptera: Pieridae).

Pierid species of the Aporia agathon group are among the largest Sino-Himalayan members of genus Aporia, with four conventionally recognised species, namely A. agathon, A. largeteaui, A. gigantea, and A. lemoulti. Recent publications indicated that some of these species may contain more than one species despite their similar morphological characters. The present research analysed this group of butterflies using mitogenomic data, and proved that A. japfuensisstat. nov., A. bifurcatastat. nov., A. moltrechtireinst. stat., A. kuangtungensisstat. nov. and A. omotoistat. nov. should be recognised a

Mite fauna (Acari: Erythraeidae and Otopheidomenidae) associated with hawkmoths (Lepidoptera: Sphingidae) in northeastern Brazil.

The current understanding of ectoparasitic mites, especially those belonging to Otopheidomenidae, has been constrained by limited data derived primarily from museum specimens. To bridge this knowledge gap, we undertook a study to investigate mite infestations on freshly captured hawkmoths (Lepidoptera: Sphingidae). From August 2016 to July 2018, we collected samples in the Chapada do Araripe area in the municipality of Santana do Cariri (7°12'33''S, 39°43'22''W, 750 m a.s.l.), Ceará, Northeast Brazil. We attracted and captured sphingids using an artificial light source and then gathered mites

Replication of Dengue Virus 4 in Plodia interpunctella (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) Larvae Under Laboratory Conditions.

Background: Developing methods for the isolation and replication of dengue virus (DENV), based on nonhematophagous insect models to assess virus-host interaction, would contribute, for instance, to the creation of drugs or vaccines and eventually to the control of the disease. In this regard, nonhematophagous mosquitoes have been used as biological hosts for the isolation of DENV because they are specific and sensitive to a low viral load and viral particles with low infectivity. However, implementation of these models is mainly affected by the complexity of the establishment of the entomologi

First report of the poplar leaf miner, Phyllonorycter populifoliella (Treitschke) (Lepidoptera: Gracillariidae) from India.

Here we report about the discovery of the poplar leaf miner, Phyllonorycter populifoliella (Treitschke) in India. The mines of this micromoth were found in noticeable density on the leaves of poplar, Populus sp. (Salicaceae) in the northern mountainous region Ladakh in 2017-2018. We provide short morphological diagnosis, describe bionomics and analyze molecular data of Ph. populifoliella from India comparing sequences with those from other countries in Eurasia where the species is known as native. We also illustrate male and female genitalia, an adult of the moth, the leaf mines and the infest

Trapping Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) Moths in Different Crop Habitats in Togo and Ghana.

The economic impact of the invasion of Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith, Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) into Africa has so far been limited to maize agriculture but could potentially impact many other crops. Trapping based on pheromone lures provides a cost-effective method for detecting this important pest (commonly known as fall armyworm) and will be essential for large-scale monitoring of populations to determine its geographical distribution and migration behavior as the species equilibrates to its new environment. However, the effective use of pheromone trapping requires optimization for a give

Understanding toxicological implications of accidents with caterpillars Megalopyge lanata and Podalia orsilochus (Lepidoptera: Megalopygidae).

Megalopygids Megalopyge lanata and Podalia orsilochus are common causative agents of accidents in agricultural workers. These accidents are provoked by dermal contact at their larval stage and are characterized by cutaneous reactions, such as burning pain, edema and erythema, typically mild and self-limited. There is very little information about their venoms and their toxicological implications on human health. Thus, we employed proteomic techniques and biological assays to characterize venoms (bristle extracts) from caterpillars of both species collected from Misiones, Argentina. The electro

Leaf alkaloids, phenolics, and coffee resistance to the leaf miner Leucoptera coffeella (Lepidoptera: Lyonetiidae).

Coffee (Coffea spp.) alkaloids (caffeine and related methylxanthines) and phenolics (caffeic and chlorogenic acids) have recognized pestistatic/pesticidal activity and mediate insect-plant interactions. The present investigation assessed the resistance of 12 coffee genotypes to the leaf miner Leucoptera (= Perileucoptera) coffeella (Guérin-Méneville & Perrottet) (Lepidoptera: Lyonetiidae) and correlated such results with the leaf content of coffee alkaloids and phenolics that probably play a role in the interaction between coffee and this leaf miner. The levels of chlorogenic and caffeic acid,
