Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) are spreading worldwide in hospital and community settings, thus posing a serious public health problem. Panton-Valentine Leukocidin (PVL), an important virulence factor of S. aureus, is a marker of community-acquired MRSA. Here we determined the prevalence of pvl genes among S. aureus isolates from different hospitals in the Gaza Strip, Palestine. A total of 285 S. aureus isolates were collected from five different hospitals in the Gaza Strip. All isolates were characterized for their susceptibility patterns to available antimicrobial agents

Staphylococcus aureus colonizes the nasopharynx in one third of healthy individuals and is also responsible for several infections in pediatrics such as endocarditis, pneumonia and osteoarticular infections. It has several virulence mechanisms, such as Panton Valentine leukocidin (PVL), which is an exotoxin that causes cell death. It is commonly related to methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and more serious pulmonary and musculoskeletal infections. However, PVL is not exclusive to MRSA. Two clinical cases of patients with infection by methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus USA300, belonging to sequence type (ST) 8, is a rare cause of necrotizing fasciitis in the USA. We herein report a case of monomicrobial Fournier's gangrene caused by an ST8, methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (designated ksw1). Whole-genome sequencing and analyses for virulence determinants revealed that, unlike USA300, ksw1 lacked virulence genes, such as Panton-Valentine leukocidin and SCCmec, while harboring the toxic shock syndrome toxin-1 gene. These genomic features correlate with ST8 CA-MRSA/J, which is the major genotype of ST8 in

Staphylococcus aureus necrotizing pneumonia is a life-threatening disease that is frequently preceded by influenza infection. The S. aureus toxin Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL) is most likely causative for necrotizing diseases, but the precise pathogenic mechanisms of PVL and a possible contribution of influenza virus remain to be elucidated. In this study, we present a model that explains how influenza virus and PVL act together to cause necrotizing pneumonia: an influenza infection activates the lung epithelium to produce chemoattractants for neutrophils. Upon superinfection with PVL-expr

We describe a rare case of multifocal necrotizing fasciitis (NF) complicating a single vaccine injection. Injection of hepatitis B vaccine of a 16-year-old immunocompetent woman developed into rapidly spreading multifocal NF of the right arm and the thighs, with septic shock. Treatment with antimicrobial therapy and surgical debridements allowed amputation to be avoided with a favourable outcome. The etiological agent was a methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) isolate harboring the Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL) and five enterotoxins. PVL has recently been reported in large se

Two cases of infection with Panton-Valentine Leukocidin (PVL) producing strains of Staphylococcus aureus are reported. A 15-year-old insulin dependent diabetic developed toxic shock syndrome and an abscess in the deep tissue around his left hip. A 34-day-old infant presented with a right orbital cellulitis with an intra-orbital collection and septicaemia. In both cases PVL-producing strains of Staphylococcus aureus were isolated. Both surgery and prolonged antibiotic combination regimens were required to eradicate the infection. The cases reported here demonstrate the wide range of clinical pr

UNLABELLED: Staphylococcus aureus carrying the Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL) genes, in both methicillin-susceptible (MSSA) and methicillin-resistant (MRSA) strains, causes severe infection in previously healthy children. We described critically ill children with PVL-positive infection and explored predictors of prolonged intensive care. In this multicenter, single-cohort retrospective study, we included 44 consecutive children aged 0-16 years with PVL-producing S. aureus infection admitted to a neonatal or pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) at 13 Italian centers between 2022 and 2025. Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL) is a leukocyte-lytic toxin produced by Staphylococcus aureus, which is primarily associated with skin and soft tissue infections. Notably, there has been an increase in the number of cases caused by the USA300 lineage in Japan. However, the reported prevalence of USA300 is limited in other Asian countries, including Korea. This study investigated the prevalence of PVL-positive methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) in Korea and Japan and compared their molecular epidemiological characteristics. A total of 463 MRSA strains were analyzed, comprising 283 strains

Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL) is a staphylococcal toxin associated with chronic/recurrent skin and soft tissue infections (SSTIs) and necrotizing pneumonia. Its detection in clinical isolates of Staphylococcus aureus warrants aggressive therapy and infection control measures. However, PVL detection relies on molecular methods of limited use, especially in outpatient or resource-poor settings. In order to aid the development of a lateral flow (LF) test for PVL, clinical isolates from SSTIs were collected in 2020/21 at three laboratories in two cities in the Eastern part of Germany. After th

BACKGROUND: Community-acquired (CA) pyodermas are one of the most common infections encountered in the dermatology outpatient clinics. A significant number of these conditions are caused by Staphylococcus aureus. CA-methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) and CA-methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) have specific virulence genes which are associated with these diseases, particularly the Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL) genes. The presence of the PVL gene as a virulence factor may be associated with recurrent and severe skin infections.

AIMS: Staphylococcus aureus is one of the most common pathogens in hospital environment and community. Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL) production is clinically associated with skin abscesses, soft tissues infections, bacteraemia and sepsis. This study aimed to investigate the effects of the presence of genes lukF/S-PV coding for PVL, in histological and haematological features during systemic infection, using a Swiss mice experimental model.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Experiments were performed using 25 mice distributed into five experimental groups, intravenously inoculated with 50 µl suspension

BACKGROUND: Community-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (CA-MRSA) expressing Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL) causes severe skin and soft-tissue infection (SSTI), necrotizing pneumonia, and other invasive infections. The PVL toxin has been implicated as a virulence factor, and antibody to a component of this toxin is under investigation as a vaccine candidate. The role of PVL in pathogenesis remains controversial, and it is unknown whether human serum antibody to PVL modulates infection.
METHODS: We determined antibody levels to PVL in serum samples from children aged 0-
