Use of the levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system: an Austrian perspective.

Approximately 12 million women worldwide use the levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system (IUS), with approximately 180,000 users of this IUS currently reported in Austria. A patient satisfaction study of 591 women in Austria revealed a high number of 'very satisfied' (79%) and 'satisfied' (19%) patients. Reliability, comfort, excellent compatibility and less severe, shorter and less painful monthly periods were the most frequently named advantages of the levonorgestrel-releasing IUS. Medication-induced cervical priming before insertion can be carried out on a routine or selective basis (f

The levonorgestrel intrauterine system for use in peri- and postmenopausal women.

The intrauterine system (IUS) delivering levonorgestrel (LNG; Mirena), initially developed as a long-acting method of contraception, has demonstrated its efficacy and safety in a large number of users all over the world. The local delivery of a small dose of a highly effective progestin in the uterine cavity maintains the endometrium in a nonproliferative state and reduces the number of bleeding days, thus preventing anemia, an important medical benefit, especially in developing countries. In addition, the intrauterine delivery of a progestin allows the treatment of other medical conditions an

Use of the levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system and breast cancer.

OBJECTIVE: The effect of exogenous hormones on the incidence of breast cancer has been extensively studied. Most studies regarding hormonal contraception have focused on combined oral contraceptives, and there is paucity of literature regarding nonoral and progestin-only contraceptives. The present study analyzed the relationship between breast cancer and use of the levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system. METHODS: This study was based on data gathered from a large postmarketing study on levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system users (n = 17,360) carried out in Finland. The results p

The levonorgestrel intrauterine system: a clinical perspective from the UK.

The main contraceptive effects of this valuable product [the levonorgestrel intrauterine system (LNG-IUS)] are by endometrial suppression and changes to the cervical mucus and uterotubal fluid that impair sperm migration. The blood levels of LNG are very low, so progestogenic symptoms are uncommon. Most women still ovulate and in the remainder sufficient estrogen for health is produced from the ovary, even if they become amenorrhoeic, as many do; this is primarily a local end-organ effect and should be seen as a benefit. Although usable by selected nulliparae, it is ideal for the parous woman.

Importance of levonorgestrel dose in oral contraceptives for effects on coagulation.

Combined oral contraceptives show clear differences in effect on the tissue factor-initiated coagulation test of activated protein C resistance, which is dependent on the presence and dosage of levonorgestrel. Multiphasic levonorgestrol oral contraceptives differ from monophasic contraceptives and resemble third-generation contraceptives.

Levonorgestrel subdermal implants. A review of contraceptive efficacy and acceptability.

UNLABELLED: Levonorgestrel 6-capsule subdermal implants (Norplant) are an effective form of reversible contraception. When implanted under the skin of the upper arm, they release drug into the circulation at a relatively constant rate over 5 years. Generally, the cumulative pregnancy rate at the end of 5 years' levonorgestrel implant use is less than 2 per 100 users. The implants provide contraceptive efficacy equivalent to, or better than, that provided by other reversible methods (including oral contraceptives). Younger women are more likely than older women to become pregnant while using le

A risk-benefit assessment of the levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system.

The levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system (LNG-IUS), has been developed by Leiras Pharmaceuticals, Turku, Finland. It is a new systemic hormonal contraceptive that releases levonorgestrel 20 micrograms every 24 hours. The device provides fertility control comparable with that of female sterilisation, complete reversibility and convenience, and has an excellent tolerability record. The low dosage of levonorgestrel released by its unique delivery system ensures minimal hormone-related systemic adverse effects, which tend to be in the category of 'nuisance' rather than hazardous, and gradu

Levonorgestrel-releasing IUD as a method of contraception with therapeutic properties.

The levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine device LNg IUD is a new contraceptive method that combines the advantages of both hormonal and intrauterine contraception. It gives users non-contraceptive health benefits and can also be used as an effective therapy for menorrhagia. The local release of LNg within the endometrial cavity results in strong suppression of endometrial growth as the endometrium becomes insensitive to ovarian estradiol. The endometrial suppression is the reason for a significant reduction of menstrual blood loss or amenorrhea, and for the disappearance of dysmenorrhea. The

The non-contraceptive effects of the levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine device.

Clinical trials have consistently shown that the IUD that releases 20 micrograms levonorgestrel daily (LNG-IUD-20) has a contraceptive efficacy comparable to, if not surpassing, the Copper T380 and the Multiload Copper-375 IUDs. The focus of this review is the device's non-contraceptive effects--the beneficial ones, such as reduction of menorrhagia, a therapeutic effect on dysmenorrhea, and prevention of ectopic pregnancy, as well as the deleterious ones, such as amenorrhea, spotting and irregular bleeding, hormonal side-effects, and functional ovarian cysts. Also discussed are the possibility

Levonorgestrel protected Au10 cluster for hypochlorite sensing in living organisms.

BACKGROUND: Highly reactive oxygen species (ROS) could lead to serious damage in living cells and are associated with many diseases like cancers. Metal cluster with strong fluorescence has great potential in biosensing and many thiolate ligands-protected clusters have been applied in ROS sensing. RESULTS: In this work, we synthesized levonorgestrel protected Au10 cluster with specific sensing ability for highly ROS via crystal transformation from Au8 cluster, demonstrating the significance of inner core structure on detecting performance. The detection limit of Au10 cluster for ClO- could rea

Reversible Cerebral Vasoconstriction Syndrome Associated with Levonorgestrel-Releasing Intrauterine System.

Reversible cerebral vasoconstriction syndromes (RCVS) is a rare disease that is characterized by reversible multifocal stenosis of the cerebral arteries with various clinical manifestations. Though the pathomechanism of RCVS was unclear, we reported RCVS related to the levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system (IUS). A previous healthy 36-year-old woman had thunderclap headache after implanting the levonorgestrel-releasing IUS a year ago. In the serial angiography, we initially found left vertebra artery (VA), and then additionally new stenosis of both anterior cerebral arteries and middle

Enhanced metabolism of levonorgestrel during phenobarbital treatment and resultant pregnancy.

Levonorgestrel implants (Norplant) are an alternative to oral contraceptives and medroxyprogesterone acetate intramuscular injections. An interaction may exist between levonorgestrel and agents that induce the hepatic microsomal enzyme system. A 21-year-old woman with a history of a seizure disorder, treated with phenobarbital, who received levonorgestrel implants became pregnant. After a normal delivery, she took oral contraceptives concomitantly with phenobarbital. Although she was educated about the importance of a backup method of contraception, the woman again became pregnant and delivere
