Control of Citrus Huanglongbing via Trunk Injection of Plant Defense Activators and Antibiotics.

Citrus huanglongbing (HLB) or greening is a devastating disease of citrus worldwide and no effective control measure is currently available. Plant defense activators environmentally friendly compounds capable of inducing resistance against many plant pathogens. Earlier studies showed that foliar spray of plant defense inducers could slow down HLB disease progress. In this study, eight plant defense activators and three antibiotics were evaluated in three field trials for their effect to control HLB by trunk injection of young and mature sweet orange trees. Results showed that four trunk inject

Responses of the Asian citrus psyllid to volatiles emitted by the flushing shoots of its rutaceous host plants.

Diaphorina citri Kuwayama (Hemiptera: Psyllidae) carries Candidatus liberibacter spp., the putative causal agents of Huanglongbing. D. citri reproduces and develops only on the flushing shoots of its rutaceous host plants. Here we examined whether D. citri is attracted to host plant odors and a mixture of synthetic terpenes. Tests conducted in a vertically oriented Y-tube olfactometer showed that both males and females preferentially entered the Y-tube arm containing the odor from the young shoots of Murraya paniculata (L.) Jack and Citrus limon L. Burm. f. cultivar Eureka. Only males exhibite

Engineering citrus for psyllid control: virus-induced silencing of osmoregulatory genes reduces survival and development of Diaphorina citri.

BACKGROUND: The Asian citrus psyllid (Diaphorina citri) is the insect vector of 'Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus', the causal agent of huanglongbing (HLB), the most destructive citrus disease worldwide. Current management depends largely on repeated insecticide applications, underscoring the need for sustainable alternatives. Osmoregulation is indispensable for D. citri because the insect feeds exclusively on sucrose-rich phloem sap and must continuously regulate carbohydrate metabolism and water balance to maintain physiological homeostasis. RNA interference (RNAi)-mediated silencing of suc

Coupling a branch enclosure with differential mobility spectrometry to isolate and measure plant volatiles in contained greenhouse settings.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are off-gassed from all living organisms and represent end products of metabolic pathways within the system. In agricultural systems, these VOCs can provide important information on plant health and can ordinarily be measured non-invasively without harvesting tissue from the plants. Previously we reported a portable gas chromatography/differential mobility spectrometry (GC/DMS) system that could distinguish VOC profiles of pathogen-infected citrus from healthy trees before visual symptoms of disease were present. These measurements were taken directly from can

Phytoene desaturase-silenced citrus as a trap crop with multiple cues to attract Diaphorina citri, the vector of Huanglongbing.

Huanglongbing (HLB) is one of the most destructive diseases in citrus worldwide. Unfortunately, HLB has no cure and management relies on insecticides to reduce populations of the vector, Diaphorina citri Kuwayama (Hemiptera: Liviidae). We propose an attract-and-kill strategy using a trap crop as an alternative to vector control to reduce transmission of the pathogen, 'Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus'. We evaluated vector response to phytoene desaturase-silenced citrus trees using virus-induced gene silencing technology. Citrus tristeza virus (CTV) was used to produce a phytoene desaturase-si

Effect of Horticultural Mineral Oil on Huanglongbing Transmission by Diaphorina citri Kuwayama (Hemiptera: Psyllidae) Population in a Commercial Citrus Orchard in Sarawak, Malaysia, Northern Borneo.

Diaphorina citri Kuwayama transmits a destructive citrus disease caused by a fastidious bacterium 'Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus' (CLas) designated as Huanglongbing (HLB) which posed a risk of detrimental threat to the Malaysian citrus industry. All D. citri life stages show a lumped habit on young flushes and its population fluctuations was closely related to accessibility of young flushes. The study aimed to investigate if the appearance of young flush shoots on citrus influences ACP population fluctuation and if horticultural mineral oil (HMO) could reduce spread of HLB transmission by

Recombinant cystatin ingestion by Diaphorina citri reduces insect survival: insights into the HLB host-bacteria interaction (D. citri-CLas) focused on DcCathL studies.

Huanglongbing (HLB) is considered the most serious Citrus disease for which there are currently no effective control methods. The putative agents of HLB, Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus (CLas), and the vector Diaphorina citri, are widespread in citrus regions, causing losses in citrus cultivation worldwide. Studying the interactions between D. citri and CLas can elucidate disease epidemiology and determine specific targets for HLB control. This work aimed to improve our understanding of the host-bacteria (D. citri-CLas) relationship, focusing on cysteine peptidase (DcCathL) and its inhibitio

Control efficiency and Huanglongbing resistance-related clues mediated by novel Hermetia illucens frass formulation.

The preventive and curative management of citrus Huanglongbing (HLB) remains a major global challenge in citrus production. As an emerging microbial fertilizer rich in antimicrobial peptide mixtures, Hermetia illucens frass (HIF) exhibits promising antibacterial potential against HLB-associated pathogens. In this study, we evaluated the suppressive effects of HIF on Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus (CLas) infection and explored the underlying physiological, metabolic, and multi-omic regulatory mechanisms in CLas-infected citrus nursery trees grown in pots. Quantitative real-time PCR analysis

Impacts of huanglongbing on fruit yield and quality and on flushing dynamics of Sicilian lemon trees.

INTRODUCTION: The severe Asian form of huanglongbing (HLB), a vascular disease associated with the phloem-limited bacterium 'Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus', is transmitted by the Asian citrus psyllid (ACP) Diaphorina citri. Disease impacts are known for sweet oranges and acid limes but not lemons. METHODS: In a five-year study (2017-2021) we compared yield and fruit quality between naturally-infected and healthy 5-yr-old trees of Sicilian lemon 'Femminello', and shoot phenology on both lemon and 'Valencia' orange, both grafted onto 'Swingle' citrumelo, grown in southeastern São Paulo Stat

Exogenous application of the plant signalers methyl jasmonate and salicylic acid induces changes in volatile emissions from citrus foliage and influences the aggregation behavior of Asian citrus psyllid (Diaphorina citri), vector of Huanglongbing.

Huanglongbing, also known as citrus greening, is a destructive disease that threatens citrus production worldwide. It is putatively caused by the phloem-limited bacterium Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus (Las). Currently, the disease is untreatable and efforts focus on intensive insecticide use to control the vector, Asian citrus psyllid (Diaphorina citri). Emerging psyllid resistance to multiple insecticides has generated investigations into the use of exogenously applied signaling compounds to enhance citrus resistance to D. citri and Las. In the present study, we examined whether foliar ap
