This review aims to define the magnitude of and risks for this ESKD epidemic among Libyans as there is a dearth of published data on this subject. METHODS: A systematic review was conducted by searching PubMed, EMBASE and Google scholar databases to identify all relevant papers published in English from 2003 to 2012, using the following keywords: end stage, terminal, chronic, renal, kidney, risk factors, Arab, North Africa and Libya. Oral cancer in Libya and development of regional oral cancer registries: A review.

The aims of this paper are three-fold: (1) to summarize the current epidemiological data on oral cancer in Libya as reported in the published literature and as compared to other national oral cancer rates in the region; (2) to present both the history of the early development, and future goals, of population-based oral cancer tumor registries in Libya as they partner with the more established regional and international population-based cancer tumor registries; and, (3) to offer recommendations that will likely be required in the near future if these nascent, population-based Libyan oral cancer

An epidemiological study of cutaneous leishmaniasis in Al-jabal Al-gharbi, Libya.

Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is an endemic parasitic infection in the Mediterranean region, including Libya and its Al-jabal Al-gharbi province. We aimed at studying the occupational relevance as well as other epidemiological aspects of CL. We investigated 140 CL cases who attended at Gharyan outpatient polyclinic during a period of 6 months in 2009. CL infection was clinically diagnosed and confirmed by demonstration of Leishmania parasites on smears from lesions. Our findings showed that males were more affected than females (P=0.04), and people above 10-years were more affected than younger

High frequency detection of Toxoplasma gondii DNA in human neonatal tissue from Libya.

BACKGROUND: Toxoplasma gondii is a parasite that causes significant disease in humans. Toxoplasmosis is normally asymptomatic, unless associated with congenital transmission, or in immunocompromised people. Congenital transmission generally occurs at low frequencies. In this study, we use PCR to investigate possible congenital transmission of T. gondii during pregnancy in a cohort of mothers from Libya. METHODS: Two hundred and seventy two pregnant women (producing 276 neonates) were recruited to obtain umbilical cord tissue from their neonates at birth; DNA was extracted from that tissue and

INTRODUCTION: The intestinal protozoa Entamoeba histolytica, Giardia lamblia, and Cryptosporidium spp. are the causative agents of giardiasis, amebiasis, and cryptosporidiosis, respectively. Adequate knowledge of the geographical distribution of parasites and the demographic variables that influence their prevalence is important for effective control of infection in at-risk populations. METHODS: The data were obtained by an English language literature search of Medline and PubMed for papers using the search terms 'intestinal parasites and Libya, G. lamblia and Libya, E. histolytica and Libya

A biochemical study of cystic stage fluids of Echinococcus granulosus of animal origin in Libya.

The biochemical analyses of hydatid cyst fluids of sheep, goats and camels slaughtered in abattoir of Sirt, Libya showed the same constituents of elements and organic compounds. But, sheep hydatid cyst fluids contained significantly more triglycerides (P<0.05), phosphorus (P<0.05) and protein (P<0.001) than those in camels and goats. Urea was significantly more (P<0.05) in sheep and goats compared to camels.

Studies on the screwworm fly Cochliomyia hominivorax in Libya: effect of temperature on pupation and eclosion.

The American screwworm fly Cochliomyia hominivorax has recently been reported in Libya (El-Azazy 1989). Fly larvae were cultured on blood agar at different temperatures (-5 degrees, 5 degrees, 18 degrees, 20 degrees, 30 degrees, 37 degrees, or 40 degrees C). Larvae pupated at 18 degrees, 20 degrees, 30 degrees, or 37 degrees C, and the highest pupation (100%) occurred at 20 degrees C. Adult flies emerged from pupae that were maintained at 18 degrees, 20 degrees, 30 degrees, or 37 degrees C; the maximal eclosion (94%) occurred at 20 degrees C. Correlation of these findings with meteorological t

Post-flood communicable disease surveillance following the 2023 dam collapse in Eastern Libya.

Tropical Storm Daniel struck northeastern Libya on 10 September 2023, leading to the collapse of two dams and catastrophic floods. The disaster resulted in massive casualties and infrastructure damage, and led to infectious disease outbreaks. This study aimed to summarize the incidence and distribution of infectious diseases reported after the flood, describe temporal and geographical trends, and public health implications. We retrospectively reviewed 90 daily epidemiological reports produced by the National Routine Surveillance System (NRSS) between 14 September and 24 December 2023. From eac
