Experiences and perceptions of nurses working night shift: a qualitative systematic review.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this review was to examine the available evidence on the experiences and perceptions of nurses working the night shift within any specialty in the acute care, subacute, or long-term care setting. INTRODUCTION: Nurses are required for around-the-clock patient care. Night shift nurses can experience detrimental effects because of their work hours, which disrupt their normal circadian rhythm. Understanding nurses' experiences and perceptions when working night shift will facilitate the development of strategies to minimize the potential negative effects of working at

OBJECTIVES: This study sought to determine the feasibility, safety, and efficacy of elective electrical cardioversion (CV) for atrial fibrillation (AF) when performed autonomously by a trained advanced practice provider (APP) using a guideline-directed protocol. BACKGROUND: APPs have emerged as an integral part of the cardiovascular team. METHODS: A licensed advanced practice nurse-clinical nurse specialist was trained and obtained credentials to perform CVs. The advanced practice nurse performed 415 CVs autonomously (APP group) in a noninvasive procedure room with an electrophysiologist (EP

Preliminary Experience with Conservative Sharp Wound Debridement by Nurses in the Outpatient Management of Diabetic Foot Ulcers: Safety, Efficacy, and Economic Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Treatment of diabetes costs the United States an estimated $245 billion annually; one-third of which is related to the treatment of diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs). We present a safe, efficacious, and economically prudent model for the outpatient treatment of uncomplicated DFUs. METHODS: 77 patients (mean age = 54 years, range 31 to 83) with uncomplicated DFUs prospectively enrolled from September 2008 through February 2012. All patients received an initial sharp debridement by one of two orthopaedic foot and ankle fellowship trained surgeons. Ulcer dressings, offloading devices, and

Contact dermatitis treated with new topical products: a case study.

Contact dermatitis, an inflammatory response of the skin to an irritant or an allergen, can affect hospital staff. Most clinicians are routinely exposed to irritants such as latex, detergents, and chemicals. Treatment with topical corticosteroids and avoidance of suspect irritants usually resolves the dermatitis. A case study is presented of a licensed practical nurse who developed persistent contact dermatitis. The dermatitis did not resolve with 15 months of traditional treatments. Only after 3 months of treatment with two investigational topical products, which are now available to the publ

Institutional, therapeutic, and individual factors associated with 30-day mortality after COVID-19 diagnosis in Canadian long-term care facilities.

BACKGROUND: Canadian long-term care facility (LTCF) residents experienced higher death rates compared to other countries during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. This cohort study analyzes the individual, therapeutic, and institutional factors associated with death in LTCFs. METHODS: Institutional data for 17 LTCFs in Montreal, Canada were obtained from local administrative registries. Individual data for 1197 residents infected by SARS-CoV-2 between February 23 and July 11, 2020 were obtained through chart reviews. A multivariable modified Poisson regression model, which accounted for

AIM: To evaluate the effectiveness of interventions to enhance and maintain organisational commitment, work engagement and retention and to reduce burnout and turnover of newly graduated nurses (NGNs). BACKGROUND: Nurses leave their profession at a rate of 5%-18% worldwide. NGNs transferring from being a nurse student to a registered nurse may face significant stress and difficulties. To support a successful transition and reduce turnover rates among new graduates, it is necessary to identify effective interventions to enhance and maintain organisational commitment, work engagement and retent

Patients with a record of urinary frequency, urgency, nocturia, urge incontinence or irritable/unstable bladder between 1987 and 2004 were identified from the General Practice Research Database. Demographic characteristics, referrals, consultations, investigations and prescriptions for medications licensed for use in OAB were identified. Regression analyses were used t

Knowledge, attitudes and practices of health care professionals towards pharmacovigilance in Georgia.

INTRODUCTION: Pharmacovigilance (PV) is fundamental for public health, focusing on the detection, evaluation, and prevention of adverse drug reactions (ADRs). ADRs significantly contribute to global morbidity and mortality. Healthcare professionals (HCPs) play a crucial role in ensuring drug safety, as their expertise is essential for the timely identification, management, and reporting of ADRs. Despite the importance of PV, underreporting remains a critical challenge, particularly in developing countries. The PV system in Georgia is ineffective and characterized by underreporting from healthc

Healthcare professionals' perceptions of participation and learning related to mealtimes in long-term care facilities: an interview study.

BACKGROUND: Mealtimes in long-term care facilities are complex and serve multiple purposes. They provide opportunities for participation and learning, involving residents, relatives and healthcare professionals, each with unique circumstances. Participation and learning are central to healthy ageing. Healthcare professionals play a key role in enabling participation and learning among those involved, although these opportunities may be shaped by their perceptions and attitudes. Therefore, this study aimed to explore healthcare professionals' perceptions of participation and learning among resi

Latent profile analysis of knowledge, attitude and practice of hospital infection prevention and control among haemodialysis nurses in Sichuan, China: a multicenter study.

BACKGROUND: Hemodialysis, as one of the main alternative treatment methods for end-stage renal disease, has received much attention in recent years. Due to the particularity of hemodialysis treatment, patients have a relatively high risk of infection during the treatment process. Hemodialysis nurses, who are the main executors of the treatment operations and have the most contact with patients, have a close relationship with the infection risk of patients. The level of their hospital infection prevention and control literacy is closely related to the infection risk of patients. OBJECTIVE: To

Tort Immunity and Nursing Home Staffing.

IMPORTANCE: A central goal of medical malpractice law is to ensure quality of care by deterring negligent treatment. Although previous research has produced mixed results, much of it finds no clear association between liability exposure and medical treatment. During the COVID-19 pandemic, many states adopted immunity from tort liability for harms to nursing home residents, creating a natural experiment. OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between immunity from tort liability and nursing home staffing. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort study using a difference-in-differences mo

BACKGROUND: Low nursing home staffing in the United States is a growing safety concern. Socioeconomic deprivation in the local areas surrounding a nursing home may be a barrier to improving staffing rates but has been poorly studied. Thus, the objective of this paper was to assess the relationship between neighborhood deprivation and nursing home staffing in the United States. METHODS: This cross-sectional study used 2018 daily payroll-based staffing records and address data for 12,609 nursing homes in the United States linked with resident assessment data.
