Life-Course Brain Health as a Determinant of Late-Life Mental Health: American Association for Geriatric Psychiatry Expert Panel Recommendations.

This position statement of the Expert Panel on Brain Health of the American Association for Geriatric Psychiatry (AAGP) emphasizes the critical role of life course brain health in shaping mental well-being during the later stages of life. Evidence posits that maintaining optimal brain health earlier in life is crucial for preventing and managing brain aging-related disorders such as dementia/cognitive decline, depression, stroke, and anxiety. We advocate for a holistic approach that integrates medical, psychological, and social frameworks with culturally tailored interventions across the lifes

We can work it out: A qualitative study of the work-life experiences of people living with type 2 diabetes.

AIMS: People with type 2 diabetes experience a range of negative work-related outcomes at a time when people are expected to remain active within the labour market for longer. This study sought to identify the work-related challenges faced by people with type 2 diabetes and ways to address them. METHODS: Recruitment was undertaken in two contexts and focussed on people living with type 2 diabetes of working age (18-67). A further inclusion criterion for participants was that they were registered as having at least one diabetes-related complication. Qualitative data was gathered via semi-struc

Adaptation and well-being.

An overview is given of the strategies individuals use to overcome misfortune and to restore their subjective well-being. Using adaptation-theory as a frame of reference, three groups of adaptive mechanisms are described, i.e., shifting intrapsychic criteria, cognitive reconstruction, and future-time perception. The differences and similarities with related theoretical perspectives (for instance, 'coping' and 'control') are identified. Many other theoretical notions are briefly discussed and given a place in the presented framework. In the concluding section the possible role of moderating fac

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS): three letters that change the people's life. For ever.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a neurodegenerative disease affecting the motor nervous system. It causes progressive and cumulative physical disabilities in patients, and leads to eventual death due to respiratory muscle failure. The disease is diverse in its presentation, course, and progression. We do not yet fully understand the cause or causes of the disease, nor the mechanisms for its progression; thus, we lack effective means for treating this disease. Currently, we rely on a multidisciplinary approach to symptomatically manage and care for patients who have ALS. Although amyotro

On the continuous calibration of happiness.

The nature of happiness is considered. A model is reviewed in which the affect system is continuously recalibrated regarding a given domain of experiences as a function of the dominant affective tone those experiences have over time. In this view, people who experience repeated negative affect in a domain undergo an adjustment such that they become less demanding about the quality of experience producing happiness; people who experience repeated positive affect in a domain undergo an adjustment such that they become more demanding about the quality of experience required for happiness. Each re

Psychosocial implications of rare genetic skin diseases affecting appearance on daily life experiences, emotional state, self-perception and quality of life in adults: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Since the beginning of human genetic research, there are very few publications sharing insights of the negative impact of rare genetic skin diseases (RGSD) on patients' experiences. This systematic review assessed the psychosocial implications of these conditions in terms of daily life experiences, emotional state, self-perception, and Quality of Life (QoL). METHODOLOGY: A systematic review was carried out on albinism, neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1), birthmarks and inherited ichthyosis. Sex differences in rates of obesity in bipolar disorder: postulated mechanisms.

OBJECTIVE: The increased standardized mortality ratio (SMR) from cardiovascular disease (CVD) in women with bipolar disorder (BD), relative to men with BD and individuals of both sexes in the general population, provides the impetus to identify factors that contribute to the differential association of obesity with BD in women. METHODS: We conducted a selective PubMed search of English-language articles published from September 1990 to June 2012. The key search terms were bipolar disorder and metabolic syndrome cross-referenced with gender, sex, obesity, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and d

A simple statistical method for measuring how life events affect happiness.

BACKGROUND: Life events-like illness, marriage, or unemployment-have important effects on people. But there is no accepted way to measure the different sizes of these events upon human happiness and psychological health. By using happiness regression equations, economists have recently developed a method. METHODS: We estimate happiness regressions using large random samples of individuals. The relative coefficients of income and life events on happiness allow us to calculate a monetary 'compensating amount' for each kind of life event. RESULTS: The paper calculates the impact of different li

Anxiety and mitral valve prolapse syndrome.

The diagnosis of Mitral Valve Prolapse Syndrome (MVPS), even though symptomatically similar to anxiety neurosis, may prompt pharmacological treatment only, neglecting any underlying emotional problems. If only a dichotomy were considered, one diagnosis might be seen as mutually exclusive of the other. A case history is presented illustrating features of both clinical syndromes. We consider the interaction of both etiologies, as well as the possibility of both being unrelated and coincidental. As physiological factors are explored when the diagnosis of anxiety neurosis is considered, so should

Stressful life events and tinnitus : Reflections and speculations.

The role of life events has not been extensively studied in the context of tinnitus. There is, however, evidence about the psychological impact of tinnitus and about the influence of psychological processes as mediators of the tinnitus experience. On the basis of this evidence, the possibility that stressful life events can act as a trigger for tinnitus is discussed; although the evidence is fragmentary and indirect, the possibility cannot be discounted. It is argued that the onset of tinnitus and the associated clinical encounters can constitute an acute stressful life event, and the ongoing

Stressful life events, post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms and mental health in individuals with intellectual disabilities: a scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Stressful life events are events that do not fulfil the A criterion of PTSD in the DSM-5(TR) but are perceived as negative by the person. There is an ongoing debate about the usefulness of the A criterion as a gate criterion for PTSD, and especially regarding which events qualify as traumatic or stressful life events. This debate is particularly important for individuals with intellectual disabilities (ID) or borderline intellectual functioning (BIF), as they seem to be more likely to experience traumatic and stressful life events than their peers without ID-BIF and appear to be mo

Specific and cumulative lifetime stressors in the aetiology of major depression: A longitudinal community-based population study.

AIMS: Early-life stressful circumstances (i.e. childhood maltreatment) coupled with stressful events later in life increase the likelihood of subsequent depression. However, very few studies have been conducted to examine the specific and cumulative effects of these stressors in the development of depression. There is also a paucity of research that simultaneously considers the role of biological factors combined with psychosocial stressors in the aetiology of depression. Guided by the biopsychosocial model proposed by Engel, the present study aims to examine to what extent the experience of s

The Influence of Negative Life Events on Suicidal Ideation in College Students: The Role of Rumination.

This study aimed to investigate the influence of negative life events on suicidal ideation in college students and the role of rumination. Using a cluster sampling method, 894 college students were asked to fill out the adolescent life event scale, ruminative response scale, and suicidal ideation scale. The study revealed the following: (1) negative life events, rumination, and suicidal ideation were significantly positively correlated with each other; (2) rumination played a full mediating role in the influence of negative life events on suicidal ideation; and (3) rumination also played a mod

Understanding the life experience of Barth syndrome from the perspective of adults: a qualitative one-on-one interview study.

BACKGROUND: Barth syndrome (BTHS, OMIM 302060) is a rare, life-threatening, x-linked genetic disorder that occurs almost exclusively in males and is characterized by cardiomyopathy, neutropenia, skeletal muscle myopathy primarily affecting larger muscles, and shorter stature in youth. A greater number of individuals with BTHS are now surviving into adulthood due to advancements in diagnosis and disease management. Given these improvements in life expectancy, understanding the disease experience over time has become increasingly important to individuals with the condition, treatment developers,
