Social determinants of health and life expectancy in US adults.

INTRODUCTION: Individual unfavorable social determinants of health (SDoH) negatively affect health outcomes, yet the combined impact of multiple SDoH on life expectancy is not well understood. METHODS: We analyzed data from a nationally representative sample of US adults aged ≥18 years in NHANES (1999–2018) to examine associations between unfavorable SDoH—both individually and in combination—and life expectancy. RESULTS: Among 45,516 participants (mean age 47.7 years; 51.4% women) with a median follow-up of 9.4 years, 6,164 deaths occurred. Four key SDoH—employment, family income, education, a

Vitamin D, premature mortality, and life expectancy among US adults.

BACKGROUND: Vitamin D deficiency is prevailing worldwide and linked to multiple diseases; however, its association with premature mortality remains unknown in the US. METHODS: To investigate the association between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D or 25(OH)D concentrations and premature mortality and life expectancy in a nationally representative cohort of US adults. We analyzed data of adults aged ≥ 18 years included in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination (NHANES III) (1988 - 1994) and NAHANES (2001 - 2018) with linkage to th

Potential Overtreatment of DCIS in Patients with Limited Life Expectancy.

INTRODUCTION: As the benefits of intensive locoregional therapy for ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) are realized over time in older adults, life expectancy may help to guide treatment decisions. We examined whether life expectancy was associated with extent of locoregional therapy in this population. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Women ≥ 70 years old with < 5 cm of DCIS diagnosed 2010-2015 were identified in the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER)-Medicare dataset and categorized by a life expectancy ≤ 5 or > 5 years, defined by a validated claims-based measure. Differences in locoregi

[Regional differences and trends in healthy life expectancy in Germany].

BACKGROUND: Against the background of increasing life expectancy, the question arises in which state of health the additional years of life are spent. The aim of this study is to assess for the first time regional differences in healthy life expectancy for Germany. METHODS: The concept of healthy life expectancy allows for the combination of regional differences in health status and mortality in a single measure. This article uses the concept of partial healthy life expectancy. We use official data on deaths and population numbers to calculate abridged life tables. Data from the Socio-Economi

Factors and their weight in reducing life expectancy in schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Schizophrenia is associated with a wide range of socioeconomic and health-related problems, as well as 10-25 potential life-years lost. While lifestyle choices, comorbidities, and choice of medication are associated with schizophrenia disease burden and mortality, real-world evidence on the impact of these factors on expected life-years among patients with schizophrenia is limited. METHODS: In this study, register-based, nationwide data from patients with schizophrenia in Finland during 1972-2015 were analysed to determine influential factors associated with mortality and to demon

Impact of musculoskeletal disorders on healthy life expectancy in Japan.

BACKGROUND: Musculoskeletal disorders are a key cause of morbidity in elderly people. How musculoskeletal disorders relate to healthy life expectancy remain elusive. Hence, we aimed to estimate gains in healthy life expectancy from the elimination of musculoskeletal diseases and injuries by using recent national health statistics data in Japan. METHODS: Mortality data were taken from Japanese national life tables and death certificates in 2016. Information on medical diagnoses, injuries, and activity were obtained from the 2016 Comprehensive Survey of Living Conditions. We examined five disor

Life Expectancy after Liver Transplantation for Non-Cirrhotic Hepatocellular Carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Hepatocelluar carcinoma typically occurs with underlying cirrhosis. However roughly 20% of cases arise in a non-cirrhotic liver. There is limited literature that addresses the long-term survival of the narrow subgroup who received transplantation. For such patients we sought to calculate life expectancies both at time of transplant and several years later, stratified by key risk factors, and to determine if survival has improved in recent years. Such information can be helpful in making treatment decisions. METHODS: Data on 4,373 non-cirrhotic HCC patients who underwent liver tran

Contributors to Wisconsin's persistent black-white gap in life expectancy.

BACKGROUND: Although the black-white gap in life expectancy has narrowed in the U.S., there is considerable variability across states. In Wisconsin, the black-white gap exceeds 6 years, well above the national average. Reducing this disparity is an urgent public health priority, but there is limited understanding of what contributes to Wisconsin's racial gap in longevity. Our investigation identifies causes of death that contribute most to Wisconsin's black-white gap in life expectancy among males and females, and highlights specific ages where each cause of death contributes most to the gap.

Life Expectancy of White and Non-White Elite Heavyweight Boxers.

BACKGROUND: In post-industrial countries, ethnic minorities suffer poorer health and premature deaths. The present study examined ethnic differences in life expectancy and related features among elite heavyweight boxers. METHODS: Dates of birth and death, anthropometry, and championship years were gathered from media archives for champions and challengers (never been a champion) between years 1889 and 2019. Cox regression adjusted for age at contest, nationality, BMI, champion/challenger status, and number of contests was used to assess survival. RESULTS: All 237 boxers, 83 champions (37.3%

Personalized life expectancy and treatment benefit index of antiretroviral therapy.

BACKGROUND: The progression of Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) within host includes typical stages and the Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) is shown to be effective in slowing down this progression. There are great challenges in describing the entire HIV disease progression and evaluating comprehensive effects of ART on life expectancy for HIV infected individuals on ART. METHODS: We develop a novel summative treatment benefit index (TBI), based on an HIV viral dynamics model and linking the infection and viral production rates to the Weibull function. This index summarizes the integrated effe

Life expectancy of osteoarthritic patients after primary total knee arthroplasty.

BACKGROUND: Although an increased life expectancy has been previously reported in patients with osteoarthritis (OA) after undergoing total knee arthroplasty (TKA), the long-living Japanese population may provide a more accurate cohort for determining 10- and 15-year survival rates. The aims of the present study were to (1) determine the survival of patients after TKA, (2) identify the factors important for survival, and (3) compare the survival rate of the OA patients with that of the standardized general population. METHODS: The 5-, 10-, and 15-year survival rates were assessed in 326 consec

Causes of failure and life expectancy of the ileoanal pouch.

180 ileoanal pouches constructed over 10 years and followed for at least 2 years (154 for Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) and 26 for Familial Adenomatous Polyposis (FAP)) were reviewed. 23 pouches have been excised to date, 8 remain defunctioned (pouch failure FAP 7.7%, IBD 18.8%). The reasons for excision were: ischemia (n = 6), pelvic sepsis (n = 5), severe stenosis (n = 3), underlying Crohn's disease (n = 3), poor function (n = 5) and fistula (n = 1). The reasons for defunction were: Crohn's disease (n = 1), pelvic sepsis (n = 5) and ileoanal stenosis (n = 2). The projected overall pouch s

The life expectancy of profoundly handicapped people with mental retardation.

BACKGROUND: The life expectancy of people with mental retardation is shorter than that of the general population. Exact estimates of the length of survival for mentally retarded persons at especially high risk are not available, however. METHODS: We collected data on mortality and other factors for 99,543 persons with developmental disabilities, including mental retardation, who received services from the California Department of Developmental Services between March 1984 and October 1987. Three subgroups were selected on the basis of the four characteristics identified in previous studies as

Meaning of life as a protective factor against early mortality: Implications for life expectancy.

Research by Sutin et al. [16] shows a significant relationship between the meaning of life and reduced risk of mortality from various causes, including cancer, respiratory diseases, and COVID-19. Based on data from the UK Biobank, individuals with higher levels of meaning in life have a 15 % lower risk of death, even after accounting for social-demographic factors, clinical conditions, and health behaviors. Interestingly, this relationship remains strong even in the presence of depression, suggesting that meaning in life offers benefits to individuals with psychological disorders. It would be

Health status and life style in elderly Japanese men with a long life expectancy.

The Japanese population in Hawaii has one of the longest life expectancies of any large population subgroup in the U.S. and the world. Cross-sectional data on 1,379 elderly, noninstitutionalized, male Japanese American survivors of a population-based cohort study indicated the most common health problems were hypertension (43%), arthritis (33%), diabetes (13%), and gout (9%). For cancer and hypertension there is a trend toward higher prevalence in older age groups. For coronary heart disease, stroke, and angina the oldest age group (75-81 years) has a higher prevalence than that seen in younge

Living arrangements and lonely life expectancy: a multistate life table based on Markov chains.

BACKGROUND: The evolution of family structures in China has led to changes in the living arrangements of older adults, resulting in an increasing prevalence of individuals living alone. This shift has raised concerns about the impact on the well-being of older adults, particularly in relation to loneliness. The objective of this study is to examine the association between living alone and lonely life expectancy (LLE) among older adults, with particular attention to gender differences. METHODS: This study analyzed data from 9664 individuals aged 65-105, drawn from the Chinese Longitudinal Heal

Life expectancy among patients with pulmonary tuberculosis is less than one-third of life expectancy in the background population in Guinea-Bissau-an observational study.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have assessed life expectancy of patients with tuberculosis (TB) against a comparable background population, particularly in low-income, high-incidence settings. This study aimed to estimate the life expectancy (LE) of patients with TB in the West African country of Guinea-Bissau and compare it with the LE of the background population. METHODS: This study used data from the Bandim TB cohort from 2004-20 as well as census data from the capital of Guinea-Bissau. LE was estimated using a bootstrapped Kaplan-Meier survival analysis for patients with TB and the background p
