The Posidonienschiefer Formation of southern Germany has yielded an array of incredible fossil vertebrates. One of the best represented clades therein is Teleosauroidea, a successful thalattosuchian crocodylomorph group that dominated the coastlines. The most abundant teleosauroid, Macrospondylus bollensis, is known from a wide range of body sizes, making it an ideal taxon for histological and ontogenetic investigations. Previous studies examining thalattosuchian histology provide a basic understanding of bone microstructure in teleosauroids, but lack the taxonomic, stratigraphic, and ontogene

There is a famous puzzle about the first 3 million years of archaeologically visible human technological history. The pace of change, of innovation and its uptake, is extraordinarily slow. In particular, the famous handaxes of the Acheulian technological tradition first appeared about 1.7 Ma, and persisted with little change until about 800 ka, perhaps even longer. In this paper, I will offer an explanation of that stasis based in the life history and network characteristics that we infer (on phylogenetic grounds) to have characterized earlier human species. The core ideas are that (i) especia

BACKGROUND: Mosquito population dynamics are driven by large-scale (e.g. climatological) and small-scale (e.g. ecological) factors. While these factors are known to independently influence mosquito populations, it remains uncertain how drivers that simultaneously operate under natural conditions interact to influence mosquito populations. We, therefore, developed a well-controlled outdoor experiment to assess the interactive effects of two ecological drivers, predation and nutrient availability, on mosquito life history traits under multiple temperature regimes.
METHODS: We conducted a temper

BACKGROUND: The yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti, is the principal vector of medically-important infectious viruses that cause severe illness such as dengue fever, yellow fever and Zika. The transmission potential of mosquitoes for these arboviruses is largely shaped by their life history traits, such as size, survival and fecundity. These life history traits, to some degree, depend on environmental conditions, such as larval and adult nutrition (e.g., nectar availability). Both these types of nutrition are known to affect the energetic reserves and life history traits of adults, but wheth

Certain mosquito species pose a significant threat to human health, causing thousands of deaths annually via diseases such as yellow fever, dengue fever, and chikungunya. A variety of insects, including dragonflies and backswimmers, prey on mosquito larvae, providing natural population suppression, but knowledge of the life history and quantification of the mosquito suppression dynamics of these insects remain limited in the Caribbean. In the present study, we documented aspects of the life history of the backswimmer Notonecta indica L. in Jamaica and quantified its consumption of Aedes aegypt

Phenotypic traits often covary through shared genetic and environmental influences, shaping the evolution of integrated life-history strategies. In particular, correlations between behavioral and life-history traits form the core of the pace-of-life syndrome (POLS) hypothesis, yet direct experimental tests of its evolutionary and molecular foundations remain limited. Here, we combined experimental evolution and transcriptomic analyses to investigate the phenotypic and molecular architecture of POLS in the red flour beetle Tribolium castaneum. Using replicate lines artificially selected for inc

Marine heatwaves, exacerbated by climate change, are causing widespread coral mortality. Novel host-associated assisted evolution interventions, such as selective breeding, are now being considered to enhance coral heatwave tolerance and promote population persistence. Yet the evolutionary constraints associated with targeting different heat tolerance traits and the risks of unintended fitness costs remain uncertain. Here, we quantify key life history traits for Acropora aff. digitifera corals in a pedigree-tracked managed population. We find weak-to-moderate positive genetic correlations amon

In coastal ecosystems, attributes of fluid motion can prompt animal larvae to rise or sink in the water column and to select microhabitats within which they attach and commit to a benthic existence. In echinoid (sea urchin and sand dollar) larvae living along wave-exposed shorelines, intense turbulence characteristic of surf zones can cause individuals to undergo an abrupt life-history shift characterized by precocious entry into competence - the stage at which larvae will settle and complete metamorphosis in response to local cues. However, the mechanistic details of this turbulence-triggered

Although life-history trade-offs are central to life-history evolution, their mechanistic basis is often unclear. Traditionally, trade-offs are understood in terms of competition for limited resources among traits within an organism, which could be mediated by signal transduction pathways at the level of cellular metabolism. Nevertheless, trade-offs are also thought to be produced as a consequence of the performance of one activity generating negative consequences for other traits, or the result of genes or pathways that simultaneously regulate two life-history traits in opposite directions (a

OBJECTIVES: To optimise host-to-host transmission, digenean trematodes (parasites) synchronise their cercarial emission patterns with the aquatic activities of their vertebrate hosts. Schistosoma mansoni has two different circadian chronotypes: a diurnal shedding pattern with a mean peak occurring at 11:00 h, and a nocturnal shedding pattern with a mean peak occurring at 20:00 h. We analysed the life-history variations between these two chronotypes at the levels of the parasite and its hosts.
METHODS: For each chronotype, we quantified three life-history traits related to the parasite (prepat

The activities that define survival and reproductive success in animals depend on their physical performance. However, performance is a complex trait, and organisms must balance competing demands of multiple underlying factors every time they undertake an activity. For example, the morphology that increases bite force (i.e. increased head size) - improving fighting ability - should constrain sprinting performance by adding mass to the body. Consequently, trade-offs between fighting and escape performance might be sex specific where sexual dimorphism is present, or pronounced in animals with ex

The rapid decline in Arctic sea ice (ASI) extent, area and volume during recent decades is occurring before we can understand many of the mechanisms through which ASI interacts with biological processes both at sea and on land. As a consequence, our ability to predict and manage the effects of this enormous environmental change is limited, making this a crisis discipline Here, we propose a framework to study these effects, defining direct effects as those acting on life-history events of Arctic biota, and indirect effects, where ASI acts upon biological systems through chains of events, normal

Living mammal groups exhibit rapid juvenile growth with a cessation of growth in adulthood1. Understanding the emergence of this pattern in the earliest mammaliaforms (mammals and their closest extinct relatives) is hindered by a paucity of fossils representing juvenile individuals. We report exceptionally complete juvenile and adult specimens of the Middle Jurassic docodontan Krusatodon, providing anatomical data and insights into the life history of early diverging mammaliaforms. We used synchrotron X-ray micro-computed tomography imaging of cementum growth increments in the teeth2-4 to prov

The field of mosquito chemical ecology has shifted focus over the past five years, driven by the recognition that odour-mediated behaviours are regulated by distinct chemical codes, that is, odour blends emanating from the natural environment. As a research community, we have shifted from our anthropocentric focus to include other behaviours, including plant seeking and oviposition site seeking, in order to develop new tools to combat residual malaria in the wake of the increased insecticide and behavioural resistance in mosquitoes across sub-Saharan Africa. In this short review, we will outli

Animal size affects the energetics of locomotion. Using female caste dimorphism in bumblebees, we assessed how body mass impacts morphological and physiological traits linked with flight. The allometric relationships obtained for wing surface area, wingbeat frequency, and flight and resting metabolic rates of workers could predict the trait values of queens that were more than fourfold larger. Flight success of queens decreased over time in part because of a large increase in body mass and a decrease in traits linked with flight, namely wingbeat frequency and metabolic rate, and the activity o

The almond moth, Cadra cautella (Walker) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), is a serious worldwide pest of dates and other crops, both in the field and in storage. Infestation by this pest significantly limits the sale and export of dates. Modified atmospheres, the temperature manipulations, are the best eco-friendly alternatives in stored product protection. We examined temperature regulation as an ecologically friendly method of pest management in stored food commodities, in particular, its effects on characteristics of C. cautella biology, including development time, oviposition period, fecundity, f

There is concern that increases in temperature due to climate change could lead to shifts in the transmission dynamics and distribution of mosquito vectors. Many current models assume there are 'average' thermal performance curves for a given vector species' life-history traits. However, this 'one-size-fits-all' assumption ignores the potential for standing phenotypic variation in life-history traits to create population-specific differences in thermal performance. In this study, we explored thermal performance of five independent field populations of Ae. aegypti from Mexico, together with a s

Understanding the mechanisms underlying the temporal stability of ecological systems remains a challenge. Although temporal stability in populations is posited to emerge from the interplay between intrinsic and extrinsic factors, the nature of these interactions remains poorly understood. Here, we analysed abundance time-series for 7912 populations from 287 fish species across 1557 streams spanning multiple biogeographic realms. We evaluated how species traits interact with environmental and biotic contexts to shape temporal stability. Populations were most stable among equilibrium-strategist

Biodiversity loss can increase parasite transmission via the dilution effect when two criteria are met. First, if communities consist of hosts that span a gradient of competence, from highly competent species that amplify transmission to low-competence species that decrease transmission. Second, if biodiversity loss is non-random, such that low-diversity communities possess a disproportionately high number of highly competent hosts. Infection is then predicted to spread more efficiently in low-diversity (high competence) communities. These criteria offer a compelling direct connection between
