We conducted a non-systematic review of epidemiological studies on a potential link between exposure to outdoor artificial light at night (O-ALAN) and disease occurrence in humans published since 2009. In recent years, a number of presses have been published on this issue, but the conclusions have been mixed. We therefore decided to critically analyze the available epidemiological evidence of such a correlation. After a careful search, 51 studies were identified and included in the review. They addressed the potential link between O-ALAN exposure and the incidence of breast cancer, other cance

The human skin is exposed daily to different environmental factors such as air pollutants and ultraviolet (UV) light. Air pollution is considered a harmful environmental risk to human skin and is known to promote aging and inflammation of this tissue, leading to the onset of skin disorders and to the appearance of wrinkles and pigmentation issues. Besides this, components of air pollution can interact synergistically with ultraviolet light and increase the impact of damage to the skin. However, little is known about the modulation of air pollution on cellular senescence in skin cells and how t

Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are the leading cause of global non-communicable disease-related deaths. In recent years there has been increasing discussion about the influence of environmental risk factors, including noise and light, on the occurrence and course of these conditions. Recent studies highlight the impact of road traffic noise on an elevated risk of stroke and increased mortality in the course of coronary artery disease (CAD). In the case of threats arising from light pollution, there are more limited published studies; however, these show an increased hospitalization risk associa

Coastal urban environments concentrate high levels of artificial light at night (ALAN), yet how persistent light pollution interacts with urban habitat conditions to shape intertidal community structure remains poorly understood. Here, we combined field surveys on natural rocky platforms and on breakwaters along the coast of northern and central Chile (20°S-33°S; eight sites per habitat type) with a 573-day field experiment at a single locality (23°S). Surveys revealed habitat-specific, non-linear declines in ephemeral and corticated algae with increasing ALAN intensity on natural rocky platfo

With the development of cities, urban area source pollution has become more severe and a significant source of water pollution. To study the relationship between urban area source pollution and water environmental quality in a river network, this study uses a city in the Yangtze River Delta, China, as an example. The Storm Water Management Model (SWMM) model and the MIKE11 model were combined into a unified modeling framework and used to simulate dynamic changes in the water quality of a river network under light rain, moderate rain, and heavy rain. In the study period, the annual urban area s

Environmental pollution exposures, including air, soil, water, light, and noise pollution, are critical issues that may implicate adverse mental health outcomes. Extreme weather conditions, such as hurricanes, floods, wildfires, and droughts, may also cause long-term severe concerns. However, the knowledge about possible psychiatric disorders associated with these exposures is currently not well disseminated. In this review, we aim to summarize the current knowledge on the impact of environmental pollution and extreme weather conditions on mental health, focusing on anxiety spectrum disorders,

Light-stabilizing additives may contribute to the overall pollution load of microplastics (MPs) and potentially enter the food chain, severely threatening aquatic life and human health. This study investigated the variation between polystyrene (PS) MPs and phthalocyanine blue (CuPC)-containing MPs before and after photoaging, as well as their effects on Microcystis aeruginosa. The presence of PS-MPs increased cell mortality, antioxidant enzyme activity, and the variation in extracellular components, while the presence of CuPC exacerbated these variations. CuPC-containing MPs caused different i

This study aimed to investigate the effects of long-term pollution from different wavelengths of light on the corneal epithelium (CE) and identify potential biomarkers. Rabbits were exposed to red, green, blue, white, and environmental light for 6 weeks. The CE was assessed using various techniques such as fluorescein sodium staining, transcriptome sequencing, electron microscopy, and molecular assays. In human corneal epithelial cells (hCECs), the downregulation of vascular cell adhesion molecule 1 (VCAM1) in response to blue light (BL) pollution was observed. This downregulation of VCAM1 inh

Artificial light at night (ALAN) disrupts biological rhythms across widely diverse organisms. To determine how energy is allocated by animals in different light environments, we investigated the impacts of ALAN on behavior and physiology of diurnal green anole lizards (Anolis carolinensis). Two groups of 24 adult lizards (half males, half females) were maintained in a controlled lab setting for six weeks. One group was exposed to a simulated natural summer light-dark cycle; the other was exposed to ALAN that simulated urban, nocturnal light exposure. After an acclimation period, we conducted f

INTRODUCTION: Artificial lighting at night (ALAN) leads to pervasive light pollution, affecting ecosystems and human health globally. Satellite assessments reveal widespread nocturnal illumination worldwide and research indicates adverse health effects. Environmental light pollution disrupts natural cycles, affecting the behavior and reproduction of various organisms.
AIM/METHOD: In this narrative review we aimed to present research on the effects of ALAN on glucose metabolism and diabetes and hone on its recently reported association with gestational diabetes (GDM).
RESULTS: Conflicting dat

Artificial light at night (ALAN) threatens natural ecosystems globally. While ALAN research is increasing, little is known about how ALAN affects plants and interactions with other organisms. We explored the effects of ALAN on plant defence and plant-insect interactions using barley (Hordeum vulgare) and the English grain aphid (Sitobion avenae). Plants were exposed to 'full' or 'part' nights of 15-20 lux ALAN, or no ALAN 'control' nights, to test the effects of ALAN on plant growth and defence. Although plant growth was only minimally affected by ALAN, aphid colony growth and aphid maturation

The hydroxyl radical (OH) is a key atmospheric oxidant that is important for regulating pollutant concentrations and particle formation and composition. The globally dominant formation mechanism of OH is ozone photolysis. However, the low-light conditions in the wintertime Arctic may limit OH formation through this pathway, and there is a lack of observations available to explain oxidant chemistry in polar locations. We use the Dynamically Simple Model of Atmospheric Chemical Complexity (DSMACC) 0D model to assess processes controlling the abundances of atmospheric oxidants in a subarctic city

Expansion of anthropogenic noise and night lighting across our planet1,2 is of increasing conservation concern3-6. Despite growing knowledge of physiological and behavioural responses to these stimuli from single-species and local-scale studies, whether these pollutants affect fitness is less clear, as is how and why species vary in their sensitivity to these anthropic stressors. Here we leverage a large citizen science dataset paired with high-resolution noise and light data from across the contiguous United States to assess how these stimuli affect reproductive success in 142 bird species. The protection of Dark and Quiet Skies (D&QS) has become an urgent concern due to increasing levels of ground-based light pollution (LP) and the rapid deployment of satellites, which have introduced significant new sources of orbital LP and radio frequency interference (RFI), affecting both astronomical observations and other services. These have prompted a growing policy response, with regulatory instruments emerging to protect D&QS from both terrestrial and space-based activities. This article examines various regulatory approaches adopted to address the impacts of LP and RFI across both ter

Environmental risk factors that have an impact on the ocular surface were reviewed and associations with age and sex, race/ethnicity, geographical area, seasonality, prevalence and possible interactions between risk factors are reviewed. Environmental factors can be (a) climate-related: temperature, humidity, wind speed, altitude, dew point, ultraviolet light, and allergen or (b) outdoor and indoor pollution: gases, particulate matter, and other sources of airborne pollutants. Temperature affects ocular surface homeostasis directly and indirectly, precipitating ocular surface diseases and/or s

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic is still rapidly spreading globally. To probe high-risk cities and the impacts of air pollution on public health, this study explores the relationship between the long-term average concentration of air pollution and the city-level case fatality rate (CFR) of COVID-19 globally. Then, geographically weighted regression (GWR) is applied to examine the spatial variability of the relationships. Six air pollution factors, including nitrogen dioxide (NO2), sulfur dioxide (SO2), ozone (O3), PM2.5 (particles with diameter ≤2.5 μm), PM10 (particles with d

Artificial Light at Night (ALAN) alters cycles of day and night, potentially modifying species' behavior. We assessed whether exposure to ALAN influences decision-making (directional swimming) in an intertidal rockfish (Girella laevisifrons) from the Southeastern Pacific. Using a Y-maze, we examined if exposure to ALAN or natural day/night conditions for one week affected the number of visits and time spent in three Y-maze compartments: dark and lit arms ("safe" and "risky" conditions, respectively) and a neutral "non-decision" area. The results showed that fish maintained in natural day/night

Water pollution from organic pollutants such as dyes and pharmaceuticals poses severe threats to ecosystems and human health, demanding effective remediation strategies. Conventional water treatment methods fall short in eliminating these contaminants, prompting interest in photocatalysis, which uses light energy to degrade pollutants into harmless substances such as carbon dioxide and water. This sustainable approach offers efficient pollutant removal with recyclable photocatalysts but faces challenges such as rapid charge recombination and limited electron-hole migration. Research aims to en
